V antage Pro2 stations are available in two basic version s: Cabled and W irele ss. A Cabled V a ntage Pro2 station transm its outside sensor data from the Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS) to the console using a st raight- through four-conductor cable. A Wireless V antage Pro 2 station tran smits outside sensor data from the ISS to the console via a low-power radio. W ireless stations can also collect da ta from the optional V a ntage Pro2 sen- sors. See “Optional Sensors” on page 2. The V antage Pro2 Quick Refer ence Guide included with you r station pro- vides an easy to use reference for most console functions. The keyboard consists of 12 command keys locat ed next to the screen displ ay and four navigation keys located below the command keys. A weather variable or console command is printed on each com- mand key. Just press a key to select the variable or function printed on that key. Each command key also has a secondary function which is printed above the key on the consol e case. T o select the second- ary function, press and release 2ND (on the front of the con- sole, upper right corner) and then immediately press the key for that function. Keys resume normal operation after the icon disappears. The up arrow, do wn arrow, left arrow, and right arrow naviga- tion keys are used to select command options, adjust values, and to provide additi onal functions when used in combination with a command key. Each mode lets you to access a different set of console functions or to display a different aspect of your weather data. V antage Pro Options Optional Sensors V antage Pro2 stations ar e extremely flexible. Us e the follo wing optional sensors and wireless stations to enhance the weather m onitoring capabili- ties of your V antage Pro2. See our website for com plete details: www.davisnet.com. Note: Optional wireless stations can only be used with Wireless V antage Pro2 S tations. The W eatherLink data logger fits neatly on the console and stores weathe r data even when the computer is turned off. Re quired for calculating evapotranspiration (ET). Ava ila ble for cabled and wireless stations. Required for calculating the UV dose. Available for Cabled and Wirele ss stat ions. Allows you to save and view your weather data on your PC. WeatherLink for Windows, serial connection (6150SER) Includes WeatherLink softwa re and serial data logger. Allows you to save and view your weather data on your PC. The mounting shelf attaches to the base of the rain collector on the ISS. Self -fabric closure with brass buckle. Allows you to save and view your weather data on y our Mac. Allows real-time display of current wea t her conditions for use with APRS (Automatic Posit ion Reporting System), for HAM radio users. Allows intelligent and effic ient control of popular automated irrigation systems using weather data. WeatherLink Option Description As with any precision instrument, use care in its assemb ly and handling. Although installing th e console is relatively simple, follo wing the steps outlined in this chapter and assembling the V antage Pro2 correctly from the start will help ensure that you enjo y all of its features with a minimum of time and ef fort. Powering the Console Cabled V antage Pro2 St ations Cabled V antage Pro2 consoles supply power to the Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS) through the console cable. The console batter- ies provide backup power for up to four to six weeks. Wireless V antage Pro2 S t ations W ireless V antage Pro2 consoles do not require the use of an AC adapter. Y ou may use the included adapter if you wish, but the three C-cell batteries should power a wireless console for up to nine months. Note: When using an AC Power adapter, be su re to use the power adapter supplie d with your V antage Pro2 Console. Y our console may be damage d by connecting the wrong power adapter. The console does not recharge the batteries. Beca use of this, and because NiCad batteries do not power the console as long as alkaline batteries, use alkaline batteries in the console. Inst alling the AC Power Adapter 1. Remove the battery cove r located on the back of the consol e by pressing down on the two latches at the top of the cover. 2. Find the power jack located on the bottom of the console case. P ower Plug Wrap Cord Around Pins On power up, the consol e displays all the LCD segments and beeps twice. A message displays in the ticker banner at the bottom of the console, followed by the first screen that displays during Setup Mode. Press DONE to skip the me ssage and enter into Setup Mode. Setup Mode guides you through steps required to configure the station. See “Setup Mode” on page 9 for more information. Inst alling Batteries 1. Remove the battery cover locat ed on the back of the console by pressing down on the two latches at the top of the cover. 2. Insert three C batteries into the battery channel, negative (o r flat) termi- nal first. 3. Replace the battery cover. Connecting Cabled St ations Cabled V a ntage Pro2 stations come with 100 feet (30m) of cable. This cable is used for connecting the conso le to the ISS. Maximum cable length from ISS to the console using Davis Instruments cables is 1000 feet. T o connect the console to the ISS: 1. Firmly insert the console end of the straig ht-through four-conductor wire into the console receptacle marked “ISS” until it clicks into place. Do not force the connector into the receptacle Battery Battery Battery Note: The ISS must be assembled and connected to the console so that it is receiving power before the console connection can be tested. Once the console is powered, it automatically enters Setup Mode. Y ou can step through the Setup Mode options, or exit the Setup Mode to test the connection and sensor readings in Current W eather Mode. See “Setup Mode” on page 9 for Setup Mode options. See “Current W eather Mod e” on page 20 for viewing and verifying current weather data co ming from the cabled console. T o verify that the console is receivi ng data from the IS S through the con- sole connection, see “Cabled ISS Assemb ly” in the Integrated Sensor Suite Installation Manual. Console Location Y ou should place the console in a location where the keyboard is easily accessible and the display is easy to r ead. T o prevent interference, maintain a distance of 10 feet between the V a ntage Pro2 console and a cordless phone (handset and base). T o ISS. Th e rubber feet help prevent dama ge to furniture and surfaces. 2. Lean the kickstand out by pulling on its top edge Y ou’ll see the indentation for your fin- ger at the top edge of the console. 3. Slide the catch to re st the kick stand in the appropriate angle. Choose low angles for display on a cof- fee table or other low area. Choose higher angles for display on a desk or shelf. 4. Console Modes The V antage Pro2 console operates in five dif feren t modes: Setup Mode Setup Mode provides access to the sta tion configuration se ttings that con- trol how the station operates. Setup Mode consists of series of screens for selecting console and weather station options. The screens that display in Setup Mode vary depending on the weather stat ion type (cabled or wire- less), or if the console has a W eathe rLink connection already estab lished. See the W eatherLink Getting Started Guide for more information on con- necting your console to your comput er. Setup Mo de Command s Setup Mode displays when the co nsole is first powered up. Current Weather Use Current Weat her Mode to read the current we ather information, change measurement units, an d to set, clea r or calibrate weather readings. Alarm Alarm Mode allows you to set, clear, and re view alarm settings. Graph Graph Mode displays your weather data using over 100 diff er ent kinds of graphs. In addition, an “X” blinks in the lower right-hand corner of the screen ev ery time the console receives a data packet from a station. The rest of the LCD screen is blank. If you have a cabled station, or if y our wireless ISS uses the factory set- tings and you are receiving the signal, the screen displays “Receiving from station No. 1”. Any optional stations that have been inst alled should also display. Screen 1: Ac tive T ransmitters Note: An ISS or optional station must be power ed for the console to recognize it.
