Even after I finally received said leg they still expect me to send them more information which is why I believe they are actually messing with me. I have sent unit into hiding just in case.They consider it a secondhand product. Even though Amazon described the item as like new in original packaging with no scratches or dents (not true at all, that's probably why it was returned) and suitable as a gift, the item is not covered under warranty. This is worth noting to people considering the product as I did not see that indicated anywhere on Amazon's website (at least nowhere on the product or Warehouse Deals page). I am fortunate enough that I can simply return the item, but you don't get 12 months or even 1 day of warranty from Danby. A strong recommendation to Amazon is to add in its description of Like New that it does not include ANY warranty coverage (not even conditional 90 days). Why would I give a gift to someone only to be embarrassed if they have an issue with it. Could you imagine the person hearing: I'm sorry the person who gave you this as a gift bought it used, and we do not cover it under warranty.Both of them failed to hold the appropriate temperature. The second one took a couple of months to break so I was out of the return window and out of luck for a refund. I'm stunned actually. TWO of these in a row failed. The technology is well known. It's either sloppy manufacturing or a bad lot with poor quality control. Doesn't matter. I'll never buy another Danby product again. Why would I?Since the purchase date it's been stationary in my office at work. I used it to keep drinks cold so I didn't use it excessively. This afternoon it started making an unusual noise and I could smell noxious fumes but I'm a warehouse manager so I didn't think much of that. I noticed the sides became very hot to the touch apparently my refrigerator had a fever. In an unceremonious moment the Danby Compact Refrigerator was gone. A crowd of my Coke Zeros and Monster Energy drinks gathered around and wept condensation tears. Soon they'll devolve into a solidly reliable place you can buy gumball machine toys. I find myself going to best buy more and more often for bigger purchases because of the unreliability of products sold though Amazon.It broke after 2 weeks. In fact, this manufacturer is on my radar and I will not purchase from them again. In my mind they should have allowed me to ship it back at their expense and either refunded my money or sent another.It's a pleasant kind with a slot for individual cans instead of the sleeve that you fill at the top and remove from the bottom like other fridges have. It's fairly energy efficient, the tall shelf layout allows for relatively flexible storage, and a semi-automatic defrost feature means you won't be scraping ice off the interior of the freezer. If you need a small, portable fridge and want something that's just a little more polished than the one used in your college days, give the Danby a closer look. The black finish is glossy, but still has a slight texture to it—it’s not so glossy as to be reflective. Nonetheless, it still picks up fingerprints pretty easily and will require some frequent cleaning. There’s a recessed handle located at the top of the fridge door, right under the Danby logo. The door is reversible, and as such, the handle runs the full width of the fridge. The main fridge portion is broken up into three sections: There’s one adjustable full shelf, one half-depth shelf meant to line up with the plastic shelf near the bottom (or it be moved to allow for storage of taller items), and an open space at the bottom where you might expect to find a drawer. The door of the fridge has three shelves of varying size, as well as a can rack. It can accommodate up to eight regular cans at a time. There’s a plastic tray set directly underneath it meant to catch any water that drips when the machine is defrosting. The freezer is also fairly accessible for a one-door compact: Items at the back may be trapped if you overstock, but the flap is larger than on some other models. Shelves are lightweight and easy to remove, and the smooth plastic trimming on the sides and the door are easy to wipe down. If anything drips inside the can holders, however, good luck cleaning them: With all the little crevices, you’re bound to miss a few sticky spots. The Danby uses a dial that points to a blue half-ring indicating the degree of coolness. Not only is there no temperature correlation, there’s no scale at all. There’s a big red button in the middle of it that, when pushed, will immediately initiate a defrost cycle in the freezer compartment. These controls are vague at best, and you have to be careful not to hit the defrost button. Since there’s no scale of any kind—just a graduated blue streak—you’ll need an external thermometer to properly calibrate the fridge. The Danby is coolest towards the top, which is near the freezer, so you may want to keep things that spoil faster up there. Over time, the temperatures remained fairly consistent, even if it’s not the best result we’ve ever seen. Well, you’d be wrong. There weren’t huge fluctuations in the Danby’s freezer, but enough that we took notice: about one degree from top to bottom, and a little over half of a degree over time. Food should be fine regardless of where you put it, but long term storage runs the risk of accumulating freezer burn. The Danby did horribly. With some of the worst retention rates we’ve ever seen, produce placed in here would lose nearly half a gram of moisture per day. It's a good excuse for eating that salad tonight. It’s a very low operating cost, just a bit more than a few value meals at your local fast food chain. One-door mini fridges are about as basic as you can get, with a very tiny freezer shelf, flimsy components, and less-than-perfect energy efficiency. The Danby manages to class up the market by offering a slighter larger-than-average freezer compartment and versatile storage, as well as a taller and thinner design that looks quite spiffy next to an average one-door. We wouldn't recommend this compact for vegetables because of its horrible moisture retention, but for office, dorm, and second-fridge purposes, the Danby DCR88BLDD is pretty good. However, fridge and freezer temperatures fluctuated a bit and frozen goods will run the risk of getting freezer burn. If you store vegetables in this mini, don't expect them to last long: Moisture loss was extremely high. For such a small product, this really isn’t all that good. Air doesn’t have very far to circulate, yet it’s still warming up a good amount over a small space. As expected, it’s coolest at the top near the freezer, so keep that in mind when putting food in here: You may want to keep things that spoil faster closer to the top. Over time, the temperatures remained fairly consistent, even if it’s not the best result we’ve come across. The Danby was subject to an average shift of about one-quarter to one-third of a degree over time. Room temperature test material was frozen after just 1 hour and 35 minutes—a very respectable rate that holds its own against average full-sized models with completely enclosed freezers. Many fridges last quite a while, but we cut the test off at 36 hours. The Danby, however, lasted just about 5 and a half hours—better hope your electric company is reliable. The methodology has been a bit different each time we’ve done a roundup, but we keep coming away with the same conclusion: All mini fridges work fine. They’re all built around similar parts, just in different capacities with different shelves. Any of them will get cold enough to store food for a few days. So go ahead and buy whatever is cheap and available, even if that means buying a used one. That said, we set out to find the standout models, the ones the with best shelves and the best prices, for anyone who wants a slightly better experience with their mini fridge. All mini fridges work fine. We started by making a spreadsheet of the best-selling mini fridges at major retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Home Depot. We compared capacity, size, price, and other specs, and we tracked user ratings. We also made sure to consider only fridges that use compressors for cooling, as opposed to thermoelectric elements, which don’t get cold enough to keep food safe. As we do for all of our guides at Wirecutter, we looked for other sources of test data or user wisdom. People need to fit mini fridges in all kinds of spaces, so we broke the category down into two divisions based on size: cube mini fridges and tall mini fridges. We considered only fridges that use compressors—thermoelectric elements don’t get cold enough. Cube mini fridges are short enough to fit under a desk or even into a shelving unit, but they’re also great for dorm rooms, tiny apartments, game rooms, office lunch areas, or anywhere else you want a compact fridge, really. They’re handy for keeping a stash of drinks or snacks, and maybe a day’s lunch for two people. Most cube fridges have a similar capacity and shelving layout. Tall mini fridges are available with a wider variety of capacities and shelving options. They’re too tall to fit under a typical 30-inch desk, but if you need to store a couple of cases of canned drinks or a few days’ worth of food, one of these should do the trick. For now, we’ve decided to ignore two-door mini fridges, but we may test them in the future. We settled on five finalists—two cube models and three tall models. We bought them and started testing. Any fridge needs to keep food safe to eat, mini fridges being no exception. All of our previous experience with these appliances told us that they’re up to that task. But just to be sure, we ran some tests to confirm that each fridge could keep food safe and appetizing. We used a specialty refrigerator thermostat to gauge whether the fridge and freezer compartments in each finalist reached and sustained safe temperatures for food storage. For the fridge compartment, we recorded the maximum and minimum temperatures it reached over a period of half an hour. Then we did the same for the freezer compartment. After narrowing down the group to our top two picks, we recorded overnight temperature readings to be sure that they worked well. Alongside that test, we stashed a frozen, microwavable meal into each model’s freezer compartment and checked it periodically over several days to confirm that it stayed frozen, and that the appliance kept freezer burn to a minimum. We also put half a head of iceberg lettuce on the top shelf of the fridge to see how well the fridge could preserve perishable produce, as well as to see if it accidentally froze items sitting near the freezer. In another test we gauged how much stuff we could fit in, which has as much to do with the shelving layout as with the manufacturer’s claimed capacity. We used standard 12-ounce soda cans as our main unit of measurement, though we also took notes on whether the fridges could store some commonly used, awkwardly shaped items like gallon jugs, snacks, and takeout boxes. We also considered factors such as compressor noise (they were all fine) and whether cans came flying out of the in-door shelves when we opened the door too fast (they always did). If you see another one for cheaper, go for it—that fridge will probably work just fine. (Some of them don’t have freezers, though, and it’s up to you if that’s a dealbreaker.) It won’t take up much floor space, but the Midea WHS-65L cube fridge can hold plenty of drinks.
