With its 12,000 BTUs, it can cool a room of up to 550 square feet. This is quite big and covers all kinds of rooms in most homes. You can set it up in an open plan living area or use it in your bedroom to cool the room down as you sleep. It’s also great for home offices, garages and baby nurseries. 3 Climate Control Modes This portable AC has three main climate control modes. If the house is feeling a bit too humid, switch to the dehumidifier mode. The AC will collect moisture from the air and exhaust it outside along with the warm air inside the house. Note that you cannot select a target humidity level because the AC doesn’t have a humidistat. There is also a fan-only mode which is handy if you just want a gentle breeze on a moderately warm day or night. It’s a great way to save energy when it isn’t too hot. You can change fan speed (maximum, medium or low)depending on how strong you want the breeze to blow or how quiet you want the fan to be. Self-evaporative You don’t always need to connect a drain hose to the AC or drain it over a bucket. In most cases, it will direct moist warm air collected inside the house outside through the exhaust vent. But on extra-humid days there might be too much water for the AC to exhaust adequately. If you see an FT error code on display it,means that the tank is full. Connect the drain hose to remove the water. If you live in a high-humidity area, it might be just easier to keep the drain hose permanently connected. 24-Hour Timer You can set the AC to switch on or off automatically after some hours. Timer settings run up to 24 hours Easy Installation and P????ortability Everything you need to install the Danby portable AC is included in the package. This includes the slider kit, vent hose and adaptor and foam seal. The manual has detailed installation instructions. Looking at customer reviews, it seems most people had no trouble installing the AC. You just need half an hour or less to set it up. The venting kit fits well and securely in a wide range of window sizes. Once you’ve set it up, it’s easy to use. The control panel has buttons for various settings and modes plus a display to show you the current settings. The remote control has no display of its own to show you what temperature or time you are setting. But the LED display on the unit is big and bright enough that you can see it from afar. If you need to move the AC, caster wheels make it easy to wheel the fairly heavy unit from room to room. Limitations This is not a year-round air conditioner. You’ll have no use for it during cold weather since it does not have a heater. That means going back to your energy-guzzling main AC during winter. Another issue is the noise. When the fan is set at the highest speed, the AC makes quite a bit of noise. There’s nothing you can do about it if it’s hot and you want the room to cool down quickly. But at night when it is cooler select the lowest fan speed to make it quieter. It brings the temperature down quickly without spending as much energy as a central AC. We haven't had any trouble with it at all, and other than one of my kids breaking the moving louvers that help circulate the air, it runs fine and keeps its 750 sq ft pretty cool. Not put-on-a-sweater cool, but cool enough to not be sweating. Granted, it's big and kind of ugly, but it doesn't take up a window, and when the weather gets better, it's easy to disconnect it from the window to open. I'm guessing this will die in a year or two, and we will likely buy another Danby. Background: I've found this machine to be very finicky, and it wasn't enough for my old room which was very large for a bedroom but had no central air or air of any kind, no insulation either, and got nailed by the sunset and really got hot, probably a 500sqft or larger room. The Danby did not perform very well, it was just a little better than a fan, and I hated it. Currently I'm in a place with central air, and it just broke, so I pulled this out of storage and it's working better than it ever has before. The new room is probably 350 sqft or less, also gets nailed at sunset like the last place. I bought the Danby used in like 2010, it's 2018 now, and I haven't used it for 6 years until now. If it had a manual I lost it. Here's what I did to improve performance: 1. The intake and exhaust tubes - This is the most important part: check these for air leaks by moving your hands around them to feel for air flowing out where it shouldn't be. The exhaust tube on mine broke in transit at one point and I taped it up with duct tape. I'd presume there's an air pressure sensor and if the pressure is too low the AC compressor won't activate. I'll also bet the exhaust is more important than the intake, but that's a guess. Once I addressed this issue the AC worked surprisingly well, better than ever before. Like it was 83 degrees F in this house yesterday but my room was like 72, that's how drastic a change it makes when you address the air leaks. Make sure it's taped up around the window you're plugging this into as well, especially close any gaps around the exhaust side. Try and keep the tubes straight as you can for best flow, and if it's working properly the exhaust tube will get very hot. If it's not working properly maybe it'll get warm. Duct tape works, painters tape did not. I don't know about the other kinds. 2. The Air Filter - I did not remember that this even had an air filter until I started feeling around for air flow, felt some around the back, discovered a filter and it was caked in dust. It's really not clearly marked at all, but it's there. The air filter covers the circle holes in the back, and you just pull up on the little indention above the circles to get it to slide up and out. I don't really know, but clean it in the sink or with a low pressure hose and make sure it's dry before you put it back in. This is less important than the tubes (mine worked better before I discovered this just by fixing the tubes), but the air filter still matters. 3. Water Leaks - mine has never leaked, but I always use the latch on it when I put the tanks on. Use the latch if yours works. 4. Thermometer - the thermometer on the unit isn't really useful at all. Get another thermometer so you actually know what temperature it is where the unit is blowing. Right now the Danby says it's 82 degrees, but where it's pointing it says it's 77 and that's 10 feet away. Wunderground says it's 97 degrees and feels like 105 outside, I'm getting hit by the sun directly so it's possibly effectively hotter. That's a 20 degree difference or more, way better than it could do back when I first used it years ago. Mind that exhaust tube. Good luck! Please try again later. Anthony 2.0 out of 5 stars A unit of this size struggles to cool a 400 sq.ft. room a few degrees (with 30?C outside, window curtains drawn). I find the best way to use it is to have the air blowing directly toward me. After many phone calls to Danby I was finally able to get the display replaced under warranty by a local electronics service company. But a few months later the display went dim again - as though Danby hadn't bothered to upgrade this obviously faulty component. I'm not really sure how effective it is compared to other portable machines, but it does make a great cooling fan, and it cools a small room well. The main reason I bought it to help me stay cool when I do my elliptical machine workout, and on that front, it works perfectly. The hoses are good quality, flexible and you can put the hoses vertically or horizontally which is really nice, and while I haven't really used it, the remote control with an LCD is a plus. The coasters on the unit make it pretty easy to move around, and it feels very solid in build quality. I started it up for guests this year and now have a problem with the dehumidifier being on all the time leading to the water reservoir filling up after 4 to 6 hours of use. How did I find this out. The unit did not switch off, it just spewed water over a nice wooden floor. I called Danby. No technical help. Just comments that they would be charging me if no fault was found after calling out a service agent. There is no way to get inside the machine. Danby service agent that is the nearest to me is at least forty miles away and I was told by the company they didn't think they would come out.
