It is not ne cessary to comple tely disassemble the entire chain case for every r epair. After the initial ex amination when the chain case is sep arated, disassembly should be ta rgeted to rea ch the identified or suspected inte rnal prob- lem. This chapter is di vided into three sect ions: 1. Chain case operation: A description of the drive paths within the chain case. 2. Chain case repair: S pecific disasse mbly and reassembly instructions. 3. T roubleshooting chart: A guide to iden tifying drive problems with the tiller. Chain Case Operation: Dr ive pat hs Understan ding the drive path s can help a technician dia gnose internal pr oblems with the chain case. The first section of this chapter will describe the drive paths associated with each operating mo de of the tiller. Chain case component group s: See Figure 5.1. 1. Shif t fork: Slides on the detent shaf t, moving the input spur gear to engage the tine and wheel drive gears. 2. Input shaf t: Hexagonal shaft drives input spur gear. The input spur gear slides on the hex sh aft to engage differe nt gears on the Main shaft and Counter Shaf t 3. Main shaf t: Supports the wheel drive and the tine drive gears. 4. Counter shaf t: Carries gears to drive the tines for- ward and the wheels in reverse. 5. Tin e s haft: Driven by a sprocket on the main shaft 6. Wheel speed reducti on shaft: Carries a sprocket driven by a gear on the main shaf t 7. Wheel axle: Driven by a sprocket on the wheel speed reduction gear. When the whe el axle turns the same direction as the input shaft, the tiller will move forward. The tines should not rotate. The sprocket att ached to the wheel drive reduction gear drives the wheel axle C lock W ise. NOTE: The gear positioning bracket is inst alled using RTV sealant. It may be necessary to use a heavy scraper to remove it. NOTE: The bearing th at supports the inpu t shaft may come off with the gear positioning br acket, or it may stay on the input shaft.Insert a putty knife or scraper betwe en the two case halves and work aro und the perimeter of the gear case until all sealant has been broken fr ee. Confirm its lo cation and remove it. See Figure 5.22. 3. There is also a was her between the spro cket on the wheel speed reduction gear and the upper half of the chain case. Confirm its location and remove it. 4. Lift the wheel axle, dr ive chain, and speed reduction sprocket out as one assembly. See Figure 5.23. NOTE: The axle and sprocket must be lifted evenly, or they will bind. 5. Once the wheel axle and sprocket ar e lifted out of the case, remove the spacer and washer that fit be low the axle. See Fig ure 5.24. There is a washer beneath the wheel axle sp eed reduction gear. The I.D. of the washe r is smaller than the shoulder on the shaf t. When putting the chain case back together, leave the reduction gear sha ft loose until the wheel axle, chai n, reduction gear, and sprocket are inst alled. 13.
