SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor re lated to loss of control and tip-over accid ents which can re sult in severe injury or death. All slopes require extra cautio n. If you cannot back up the slope or if you feel uneasy on it, d o not mow it. For your safety, use t he slope gauge included as par t of this manual to measure slopes befor e operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees as shown on th e slope gauge, do not operate this unit on that area or serious injury could result. DO: 1. Mow up and down slopes, not across. Exercise extreme caution when chan ging direction on slopes. 2. Watc h for holes, ruts, bu mps, rocks, or other hidden objects. Uneven te rrain could overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles. 3. Use slow speed. Choose a low enough speed setting so that you will not ha ve to stop or shift while on the slope. Tires may lose traction on slope s even though the brakes are fu nctioning prop erly. Always keep machine in gear when going down slopes to take advanta ge of engine braking action. 4. Follow the ma nufacturer’s recomm endations for wheel weights or coun terweights to improve stability. 5. Use extra care with gr ass catchers or other attachments. These can ch ange the stability of the machine. 6. Keep all movement on the slopes slo w and gradual. Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction. Rapid engagement or braking could cause t he front of the machine to lift an d rapidly flip over backwards which could cause serious injury. 7. Avoid starti ng or stopping on a slope. If tir es lose traction, disenga ge the blade(s) and proceed slowly straight down the slope. DO NOT: 1. Do no t turn on s lopes unless necessar y; then, tu rn slowly and gradually downhill, if possible. 2. Do not mow near drop -offs, ditches or embankments. The mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge of a cliff, ditch, or if an edge cave s in. 3. Do not try to stabilize th e machine by putting your foot on the grou nd. 4. Do not use a grass catcher on steep slopes. 5. Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced tractio n could cause sliding. 6. Do not shift to neutral and c oast downhill. Over- speeding may cause the operat or to lose control of the machine resulting in serious injury or death. 7. Do not tow heavy pull behind atta chments (e.g. loaded dump cart, lawn roller, etc.) on slopes greater than 5 d egrees. When going down hill, the extra weight te nds to push the tracto r and may cause you to loose co ntrol. (e.g. tr actor may s peed up, braking and steerin g ability are reduced, attachment may jack- knife and cause tr actor to overturn). CHILDREN 1. Tragic a ccidents c an occur if the oper ator is not alert to the prese nce of children. Children ar e often attracted to the mac hine and th e mowing activity. They do not under stand the dangers. Neve r assume that children will remain where you last saw them. a. Keep children out of the mowing area and in watchful care of a responsible a dult other than the opera tor. b. Be alert and turn machine off if a ch ild enters the area. c. Bef ore and while backing, look behind and down for small children. d. Never carry children, even with the blade( s) shut off. They may fall of f and be seriously injured or interfere with safe machine operation. The “Reverse Caution Mode” should not be used when children or others are ar ound. g. Keep children away from hot or runn ing engines. They can suffer burns from a hot muffler. h. Remove key when machine is unattende d to prevent unau thorized operat ion. 9. Never allow children und er 14 years old to operat e the machine. Children 14 years old and over sh ould read and unde rstand the operat ion instructions and safety rules in this manual and should be trained and supervised by a par ent. TOWING 1. Tow only w ith a machine that has a hit ch designed for towing. Do not att ach towed equipment except at the hitch point. 2. Follow the manufa cturers recommendation for weight limits for towed equipm ent and towing on slopes. 3. Never allow children or others in or on towed equipment. 4. On slopes, the weight of the t owed equipment may cause loss of traction and loss of contro l. 5. Travel slowly and allow extra distan ce to stop. 6. Do not shift to neutral and coast downhill. SERVICE SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE: 1. To avoid personal injury or prop erty damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasolin e is extremely flammable and th e vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when g asoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and change cl othes immediately. a. Use only an approved gasoline co ntainer. b. Never fill containers inside a vehic le or on a truck or trailer bed with a plast ic liner. Always place contain ers on the gro und away from your vehicle before filling. c. When practical, remove gas-powered equipment from th e truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equip ment on a trailer with a portable conta iner, rather than f rom a gasoline dispens er nozzle. d. Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or cont ainer opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. e. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. f. Never fuel ma chine indoors. g. Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before r efueling. h. Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than.Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before st arting the engine. k. To reduce fire hazards, keep machine free of grass, leaves, or other d ebris build-up. Clean up oil or fue l spillage and remo ve any fuel soaked deb ris. l. Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an ope n flame, spark or pilot light as on a water h eater, space heater, furnace, clothe s dryer or other gas appliances. m. Allow a machine to cool at least 5 minutes before sto ring. GENERAL SERVICE: 1. Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. En gine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorle ss, and deadly gas. 2. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspect ing, make certain the blade( s) and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire an d ground against th e engine to prevent uninten ded starting. 3. Periodica lly check to make sure th e blades come to complete stop within approximately (5) five seconds after operating the blad e disengagement control. If the blades do not sto p within the this time frame, your unit should be serviced professiona lly by your Cub Cadet dealer. 4. Check brake operat ion frequently as it is subjected to wear during no rmal operation. Adjust and serv ice as required. 5. Check the blade(s) and en gine mounting bolts at frequent intervals fo r proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade(s) for damage (e.g., excessive wear, bent, cracked). Replace the blade(s) with the original equipment manufacture r’s (O.E.M.) blade(s) on ly, listed in this manual. “Use of par ts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper perfo rmance and compromise safety!” 6. Mower blades are sharp. Wrap the blade or wear gloves, and use extra cautio n when servicing them. 7. Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tigh t to be sure the equipment is in safe working co ndition. Check the ir proper operation regu larly. 9. After striking a foreign ob ject, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire(s) and ground against the engine. Thoroug hly inspect the machine for any damage. Repair the damage bef ore starting and operating. 10. Never atte mpt to ma ke adjustme nts or repa irs to the machine while the engine is running. 11. Gr ass catcher component s and the discharge cover ar e subject to wear and damag e which could expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown. For safety prot ection, frequently check co mponents and replace immediately with ori ginal equipment manufact urer’s (O.E.M.) pa rts only, listed in this manual. “Use of parts which do no t meet the original equipment specificatio ns may lead to improper performance and compromise safety!” 12. Do not change the engine governor se ttings or over- speed the engine. The governo r controls the m aximum safe opera ting speed of th e engine. 13. Mainta in or replace safety and instr uction labels, as necessary. 14. Observe pr oper disposal laws and regulatio ns for gas, oil, etc.WARNING: YOUR RESPONSIBILITY Restrict the use of this power machine to per sons who read, understand and follow the warnings and inst ructions in this manual and on the machine.Un thread th e fuel cap by turn ing it count erclockwise. Use only c lean, fresh (under 30 days old), unleaded gasoline. Fill tank to no more than four inches below the top of the filler neck to allow space for fuel expans ion. Do not overfill. WARNING: Use extreme care when handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable an d the vapors are explosive. Never fuel machine in doors or while the engine is hot or running. Extin guish cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other sources of ignition. IMPORT ANT: Your tractor is shipped with oil in the engine. Howe ver, you MUST check the oil level before operating. Refer to Checking the Oil Level on page 19 fo r detailed instructions. Be careful not to overfill. WARNING: T he shipping brace, used f or pack aging pur poses only, must be remov ed and discarded befo re operating y our riding mow er. WARNING: The mowing deck is capa ble of throwing objects.This lever controls the spee d of the engine. When set in a given positio n, the throttle will maintain a uniform engine speed. IMPORT ANT: When operating th e tractor with the cu tting deck engaged, be certain that the throttle lever is always in the FAST (rabbit) position. Choke Control The choke control can be fou nd on the left side of the da sh panel and is activated by pulling the knob outward. Activating t he choke control closes the choke plate on the carbu retor and aids in starting the engine. Refer to Starting The Engine on page 13 of this manual for detailed st arting instructions. Brake P edal The brake pe dal is located on the right front side of the tractor above the drive pedal along the running boa rd. The brake pe dal can be used for sudden stops or setting the parking br ake. NOTE: The brake pedal mu st be fully depressed to activa te the safety interlo ck sw itch when starting th e tractor. Seat Adjustment Lever To adjust the seat forward or backward, slide the sea t adjustment lever to the left and reposition the seat to the desired position. On ce a comfortable posit ion is found, release t he seat adjustment leve r to lock the seat in place. Refe r to Seat Adjustment on page 18 of this manual for more deta iled instructions. Deck Lift Lever Found on your trac tor’s right fend er, the deck lift le ver is used to ch ange the h eight of th e cutting de ck. To us e, move the lever to the left, then place in the no tch best suited for yo ur application. Ignition Switch Module WARNING: Ne ver lea ve a running machine unattended. Alwa ys disengage PT O, mov e shift le ver into neutr a l position, set parking brak e, stop engine and re mov e ke y to pre vent unintended starting. To start the engine, insert the key into the ignition switch and turn clockwise to the START position. Release the key into the NORMAL MOWING MODE position once the engine ha s fired. To stop the engine, turn the igniti on key countercloc kwise to the STOP po sition. See Figure 3. Figure 3 IMPORT ANT: Prior to operatin g the tractor, refer to bo th Safety Interlock Switches on page 12 and Starting The Engine on page 13 of this manu al for detailed instructio ns regarding the Ign ition Switch Module and operat ing the tractor in R EVERSE CAUTION MODE. Drive P edal The drive p edal is located on the right side of th e tractor, along the running board. Depress the upper portion o f the drive pedal forward to cau se the tractor to travel fo rward. Depress the lower portion of th e drive pedal with the ball of your right foo t (NOT your heel) to cause the t ractor to travel in reverse. Ground spe ed is also controlled with the drive pe dal. The further f orward or rearward that the pedal is pivot ed, the faster the tractor will travel. The pedal will return to its original position when it ’s not depressed. IMPORT ANT: Always set the parking brak e when leaving the tractor una ttended. Slow Fast Position Position 3TART 0OSITION 3TOP 0OSITION.ORMAL -OWING?-ODE The LCD will alternately flash the recorded hours, “C HG” and “OIL” for five minu tes, after every 50 hours of recorded operatio n elapse. The maintenance inter val lasts for two hour s (from 50-52, 100-102, 150-152, etc.). The LCD will also fl ash as described above for five minutes every time the tractor’s engine has been started during this main tenance interval. Before the interval expire s, change the cra nkcase oil level as instructed in this Operat or’s Manual. Brake If the Brake light illuminates when attempting to start the tractor’s engine, depress the brake pedal. PTO (Blade Engage) If the PTO light illuminates wh en attempting to start the tractor’s engine, move PTO lever into the disengaged (OFF) position. Oil It is normal for the Oil light to illuminate while the engine is cranking during start-up, but if it illuminate’s during operation, while the engine is running, stop th e tractor immediatel y and check the crankcase oil level as instructed in this Owne r’s Manual. Battery It is normal for the Battery lig ht to illumina te while the engine is cranking during start-up, bu t if it illuminate’s during oper ation, while the engine is running, the battery is in need of a charge or the engine’s charging system is not generating sufficient amperage. Refer to the MAINTENANCE section of this man ual for the proper battery cha rging pr ocedure o r have the charging system checked by your Cub Cadet dealer. Cruise Control Lever The cruise control lever is located on the tractor das h panel, below t he steering wh eel. Push the cruise control lever downward while traveling forward at a desired speed. While holding the lever down, relea se pressure from the drive pedal. This will engage the cruise co ntrol and allow the tractor to remain at th at speed without applying pre ssure to the drive pedal. Depress the brake pedal or the drive pe dal to deactiva te cruise control. Refer to page 1 4 for detailed instructions regardin g cruise control. NOTE: Cruise contro l can NOT be engaged at the tractor’s fastest ground speed. If the operator should attempt to do so, the tractor will automatically decelerate to the faste st optimal mowing ground speed. P arking Brake Lever To set the parking brake, fully depress the brake peda l and push the parkin g brake leve r down. Hold th e lever down while taking your foot off t he brake pedal. Both the parking lever and the brake pedal will then stay depressed.
