The DC-300 is a basic, well made basic power amp intended for commercial applications, but will find good use in home entertainment systems as well. This amp is intended to be rack mounted, it can also be mounted in Crown's available at the time wooden furniture cases. You get two unbalanced quarter inch input jacks, two speaker binding posts, two attenuators on the front and a power switch. The input sensitivity is intended for commercial applications requiring (at least in my case) 1.4 volts to generate full output of 150 watts plus per channel. Objectively on paper and lab tests show the original DC-300 to exhibit very low distortion and noise numbers, which the unit does. Subjectively some listeners may feel the audio lacks snap and sparkle. The sound stage may seem shallow and narrow to some. The speakers and to a lesser extent the pre-amp has some effect on the listeners perception. One must realize that when the first DC-300 was introduced an amp of this power was unusual. Crown did the best they could with the silicon that was available to them at the time, but later editions of the DC-300 have improved the sound stage tremendously. The end of the line for this series was the DC-300A Series II, which is a quantum leap in sonic quality over the original and should please most if not all audiophile listeners. If you obtain an original DC-300 before you put it in use the massive computer grade filter capacitors should be replaced, if not already done. Many of these amps were mounted in racks and left running in commercial installations for years and years.these amps incredibly reliable and to see a 20 year MTBF in the real world is common.You should plan on reconditioning an original DC-300 if not already done so before you pass any judgements as to it's sonic quality and accuracy. One last item, some of the DC-300 amps exhibit a mechanical hum from the power transformer. It's not too loud but in a quiet listening environment bay be distracting. Happy listening. Had to replace the sub-woofer in my Infinity speakers cause of this. Helpful to know your way around a circuit, as the output caps on the heat sink will invariably need changing out. Transistors close to the heat sinks will also tend to blow. A rack fan will eliminate most component problems. The only trouble spot I have consistently found are the capacitors in the voltage doubler, they get cooked by the large resistor and 2 transistors next to them. I have shorted them, driven motors with them, tested many experimental speakers, (and you can imagine how stupid the wiring gets by 3 in the AM), they have been the 400 Hz supply for aircraft equipment with an oscillator and a step up transformer, and yes they have been used for listening. They are hard to kill. But how do they sound. Quite variable. I prefer the silver faced ones before the FTC regulations came along. I think that there were modifications made to pass these regulations that weren't the best sonically. Ken.It is one of the most classic pro amplifiers of all time, being used in just about every radio station, recording studio and remote truck for use with nearfield monitors or other small speakers. You'd see this anyplace small speakers needed to be driven, as well as to power the speakers in the station's lobby.The headphone jack is wired directly to the speaker outputs, so it has zero output impedance, and the D-75 is so quiet you're good to go. It's silent with the HD 650, and has more than enough output to blow them out. Dedicate this amplifier to headphone use if you want to. They compare input to output, and light the LED if anything is even slightly distorted. Therefore it's easy to push this amplifier and your system to get the maximum real-world power of which this amplifier is capable, regardless of your program material or speakers. When I test in the lab, they light instantly and far faster than my lab analyzer lets me know anything's amiss. They make testing this amplifier fast! They come on at about 50 mW and get brighter and brighter as the level increases, and are always flickering along with your music. The IOC s are the best overload indicators in the business. They catch any instantaneous distortion, and light bright red long enough for you to see it. It's best to avoid the newer D-75A, even if it looks cooler in black. When they don't lie on top of each other, it's due to channel imbalance. When they do lie on top of each other, the trace turns blue. I used a 120 VAC supply voltage. This amplifier is 38 years old, and works swell. If yours hums, change the way or where it's mounted to minimize it. Whatever goes in is what comes out, and if there is any sort of distortion or other problem, the IOC lights to warn you before it becomes audible. As a professional product, it lives to serve by faithfully reproducing what it's fed, not trying to make music sound even better than it is. You'll hear all the inner detail and details like footsteps behind the stage. If you want accurate sound cheap, get one of these. Crown is serious about common-mode rejection; there is an internal trim for a technician to null it out for perfection. This is much better than jock-strapping a balanced input for use with an unbalanced input as you have to do with most professional amplifiers. The speakers do not mute. It has no feet. It will get hot if you wrap it in a blanket; let it breath. It loves being rack-mounted, in which case the head conducts through the rack mount. There are diagrams in the manual. With the IOC LEDs, you always know if you're distorting or not. You can use all the power this amplifier has, regardless of load, and not have to play it softer to stay safe. Unlike consumer amplifiers, play it as loud as you want, and so long as the IOC LEDs don't light, you're not at the edge. A 100W amplifier only goes about one volume control click louder, and with the IOC LEDs you can use all of this amplifier's power without fear of distortion. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. It came to life, power lights on, fans running at full speed, all LEDs also turned on, including the SIGNAL, CLIP and FAULT light, and then everything turned OFF automatically. This time, the amplifier came to life again, all lights on, fans on, then everything shutoff again automatically. Checking out the schematic, I see there is indeed a relay on the AC power line. But what’s the condition that’s causing the amplifier to protect itself? The OUTPUT RELAY disconnects the speaker load from the amplifier (so if there is indeed DC voltage at the output, it doesn’t travel to your speakers and burn out your speaker coils), and the PWR RELAY effectively cuts off 110Volts AC power to the whole amp itself!
