Never put your hand in the discharge or collector openings. Do not unclog chute assembly while engine is running. Shut off engine and remain behind handles until all moving partshave stopped before unclogging. Use only attachments and accessories approved by the manufacturer (e.g. wheelweights, tire chains, cabs etc.). When startingengine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly. Rapid retraction of startercord (kickback) will pull hand and arm towardengine faster than youcanlet go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains couldresult. If situations occur which are not covered in this manual, use care and good judgment. CLEARING A CLOGGED DISCHARGE CHUTE Hand contact with the rotating impeller inside the discharge chute isthe most common cause of injuryassociated with snow throwers. Never use your hand to clean out the discharge chute. To clear the chute: a. SHUTTHE ENGINE OFF! b. Wait 10 seconds to be sure the impellerblades have stopped rotating. c. Always use a clean-out tool, not your hands. Check their proper operation regularly. Refer to the maintenance and adjustment sections of this manual. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting machine disengage all control levers and stopthe engine. Disconnect thespark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Check boltsandscrews for proper tightness at frequent intervals to keep the machine in safe working condition. Also, visually inspect machine for any damage. Do not change the engine governor setting or over-speed the engine. The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine. Snow thrower shave plates andskid shoes are subject to wear and damage. For your safety protection, frequently check all components andreplace with originalequipment manufacturer's (OEM) parts only as listed in the Parts pages of this operator's manual. Use of parts which donot meet the originalequipment specifications mayleadto improper performance and compromise safety. Check controllevers periodically to verifytheyengage anddisengage properly andadjust, if necessary. Refer to the adjustment section in this operator's manual for instructions. Maintain or replace safetyand instruction labels, as necessary. Observe proper disposal lawsand regulations for gas, oil, etc.to protect the environment. Never store the machine or fuelcontainer inside where there is anopen flame,spark or pilot light such as a water heater, furnace, clothes dryeretc. Always refer to the operator's manual for properinstructions onoff-season storage. 4 Replace if necessary. Donot crank engine with spark plug removed. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this product has an Average Useful Life of seven (7) years, or 60 hours of operation. At the end of the Average Useful Life havethe machine inspected annually by an authorized service dealer to ensure that all mechanical and safety systems are working properly and notworn excessively. Failure to doso canresult in accidents, injuries or death. DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE To avoidserious injury or death, do not modify engine in anyway. Tampering with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engine and cause it to operateat unsafespeeds. Never tamper with factory setting of engine governor. NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS Engines which are certified to comply with Californiaand federal EPA emission regulations for SORE (Small Off Road Equipment) are certified to operate on regular unleadedgasoline,and may include the following emission control systems: Engine Modification (EM), Oxidizing Catalyst (0C), Secondary Air injection (SAI) and Three Way Catalyst (TWC) if so equipped. SPARK ARRESTOR e This machine is equippedwith an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brushcovered or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equippedwith a spark arrestor meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). Ira spark arrestor is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator. In the State of California the above isrequired by law (Section 4442of the California PublicResources Code). Otherstates mayhave similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrestor for the muffler is available through your nearest Sears Parts and Repair Service Center. Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine before attempting to assemble and operate. SAVE THESE iNSTRUCTIONS! 6 Removing From Carton 1. Cut the corners of the carton and laythe sides flat on theground. Remove and discard all packing inserts. 2. Move the snow thrower out of the carton. 3. Make certain the cartonhas been completely emptied before discarding it. Assembly 1. 2. Place theshift lever in the Forward-6 position. Observe the lowerreararea of the snow thrower to besure both cables are aligned with roller guides before pivoting the handle upward. See Figure 1. NOTE: Make certain the upper ends of each cable are seated properly in its bracket. 3. Secure the handle by tightening the plastic wing knob located onboth the left and right sides of the handle. See Figure 2. Remove and discard any rubber bands, if present. They are for packaging purposes only. 4. Remove wing nut and hexscrew from chute control head and clevis pin and cotterpin from chute support bracket. Position chute (forward-facing) over chute base.See Figure 4. 6. Finish securing chute controlhead to chute support bracket with wing nut and hex screw removed earlier. See Figure 5. 7. Insert the chute directional controlinto thesupport bracket onthe rearof the dash panel. See Figure 6. 8. Remove the hairpinclipfrom the rearofthe chute controlhead. 9. Insert chute directional controlinto rearof the chute controlhead. Secure the chute directional controlto the chute controlhead with the hairpinclip removed earlier. Never useyour hands to clear a clogged chute assembly, Shut off engine and remain behind handles until all moving parts have stopped before usingthe clean-outtool to clear the chute assembly. Tire Pressure Under any circumstance do not exceed manufacturer's recommended psi. Equal tire pressure should be maintained at all times. Excessive pressure when seatingbeads may cause tirelrim assembly to burst with force sufficient to causeserious injury. Refer to sidewall of tire for recommended pressure. The tiresare over-inflated for shipping purposes. Check the tire pressure before operating thesnowthrower. Refer to the tire side wall for tire manufacturer's recommended psiand deflate(or inflate) the tiresas necessary. NOTE: Equal tire pressure isto bemaintained at all timesfor performance purposes. Adjustments Skid Shoes The snow thrower skid shoes are adjusted upward at the factory for shipping purposes. Adjust them downward, if desired, prior to operating the snow thrower. It is not recommended that you operate this snow thrower on gravel as it caneasily pick up and throw loose gravel,causing personal injury or damageto the snow thrower and surrounding property. For close snow removal on a smooth surface, raise skidshoes higheronthe auger housing. Refer to Figure 9. Use a middle or lowerposition whenthe area to becleared is uneven, such as a gravel driveway. NOTE: If youchoose to operate the snow thrower on a gravel surface, keep the skidshoes in position for maximum clearance between the ground and the shave plate. To adjust the skidshoes: 1. Loosen the four hex nuts (two oneach side) and carriage bolts.Move skid shoes to desired position. See Figure 9. 2. Make certain the entirebottom surface of skid shoe isagainst the ground to avoid uneven wear on the skidshoes.Pivot the chute upward or downward before retightening the wing knob. See Figure 10. Auger Control Priorto operating your snow thrower, carefully read and follow all instructions below. Perform all adjustmentsto verify your snowthrower is operating safelyand properly. Check the adjustment of the auger control as follows: 1. The auger controlis located on the left handle. It should NOT betight. 2. In a well-ventilated area, start the snow thrower engine. Refer to Starting the Engine in the Operation section. 3. While standingin the operator's position (behind the snow thrower), engage the auger. 4. Allowthe auger to remain engaged for approximately ten (10)seconds before releasing the auger control. Waitfor ALL moving parts to stopbefore adjusting the augercontrol. 7. Toreadjust the controlcable, loosen the upper hexbolt onthe auger cable bracket. See Figure 11. 8. Position the bracket upward to provide moreslack (or downward to increase cable tension). 9. Retighten the upper hex bolt. 10. Repeat steps 2-6 above to verifyproper adjustment has been achieved.Forward Your snow thrower has sixforward (F)speeds. Position one (1) is the slowest and position six (6)isthe fastest. Key The key is a safety device. It mustbefully inserted in order for the engine to start. Remove the key whenthe snow throweris not in use. NOTE: Do not turn the ignition key in an attempt to start the engine. Doing so maycause it to break. Choke Control The choke controlis foundonthe rear of the engine and is activated by turning the rotary choke knobto the CHOKE position. One(1)lstheslowerand two(2)ls thefaster. Meets ANSi Safety Sta.dards Craftsman Snow Throwers conform to thesafety standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). 12 It regulates the speed of the engine and will shutoffthe engine when moved into the STOP position.
