At least more than what the salesman could tell me. We just bought 5.7 acres, of which roughly 2.5 is wooded and tall grass. Which leads me to the DGT 6000.So far the 27hp Kohler and the Hydro have run perfect but the 54.I have a 7 acre farmette; I mow it once a week and usually have to unclog it and clean the deck twice to get through it. I am looking for a better set of blades now that I can weld pitch extensions on to hopefully solve this. I had an 18hp Craftsman before this one, welded pitch extensions (.http://polymer-consulting.com/pic/e34-manual-transmission.xml As for the unsafe issue; if you raise the plastic chute you will see that the blade area is exposed, if you where to hit a rut or unexpected uneven terrain throwing you off balance and you found your right foot and weight on this chute you might be looking for someone to buy that extra shoe when you purchase your next pair.So far the 27hp Kohler and the Hydro have run perfect but the 54.I have a 7 acre farmette; I mow it once a week and usually have to unclog it and clean the deck twice to get through it. This flaw causes early v belt failure. The steering rod attached to the axle turns and rubs the V belt. This appears as a shiney spot. Also there is rod that is at outside about 45 degrees between belts. If it is not at this angle a shiny spot will be seen. I have a work around on both of these issues. I can send any one by email if you like with a picture. Thanks, Jack Can anyone else help? Thank you. Ray Lewis It usually happens when the mower blades are turning so I'm assuming that putting a load on the engine is part of this. I'm assuming that it's oil leaking into the cylinder. Why? Do I need to replace a gasket. Piston ring? What's going on? We mow about 3 acres. Initially we had so much trouble with belts blowing out. I had service out several times (under warranty) until they fixed the problem. For the first year there were times where we replaced belts everytime we mowed. Once the problem was corrected we haven't had any belt trouble. I put on the non-mulching blades and in the taller grass we raise up the discharge chute by holding it up with a bungee cord so grass does not get caught. The blue smoke still happens every so often especially if it sits for a while on a slope. It hasn't caused any problems. It has about 250 hours on it (I think) we put between 4 and 6 hours a week on it. We have quite a few trees to mow around. All in all I guess it has been a pretty reliable mower and relatively inexpensive. We are pretty hard on it, driving fairly fast to get done with the mowing. Considering all this I give it pretty good marks. However If you would have asked me in the first year, I would not have spoken very highly of it.I mow approximately 2.5 acres of hilly terrain and have used it to haul heavy rocks with a trailer. I've had one deck replaced after it sheared and bent (hit a buried piece of concrete that was left after our water line was replace). The transmission was just replaced as it had been slipping for a while and finally went out. It's a maintenance free transmission, so other than using the purge procedure in the manual, there's nothing else to do. I have also had a spindle break. I no longer ride the tractor as carefree and rough as I used to. Overall, I am satisfied, but feel this tractor is better suited for flat land. The main gripe I would have would have to be the deck. Needs to be redesigned. Next the placement of the deck wheels. My wife seams to find every item in the yard and hits the left wheel until the mounting bolt snaps. All in all, this craftsman has got the job done well. And no I would not buy one of those JD's that are for sale at the box stores (I work for the team 48 store) You cannot beat a Kohler. For those earlier comments about white smoke blowing, you need your RPM's checked out by a Sears tech, I had a 5000GT, Briggs motor, mowed great until I had changed blades twice in 6months, started blowing smoke,he checked it, stated the motor was set 1,000rpms too high,it was under warranty and ordered new motor.I use it for cutting 4 acres of rough, country property and snowblowing 100 yards of double lane driveway all winter (in Canada). The three complaints I had with the unit, were that the mower deck did not raise high enough to avoid scalping rocks, the tires had limited traction on mildly wet grass and the damned engine cut out switch under the seat would kill the engine when I shift my weight while trying to cut along the side grade of of my ditch. I have found solutions to all of these issues, but if you choose to repeat them, do so at your own risk, since some of these involve tampering with safety features and not following directions given in the owners manual. The traction and cutting height problems were addressed with new, larger tires. 25.0 x 10.0 -12's for ATV use with an aggressive chevron type tread and 18 x 6.5 -8's on the front. this raised the whole tractor 1 inch and no more spinning on wet grass or uphill sections. Take extreme caution if you make this modification!!! It is possible to get off the tractor with the mower engaged (spinning blades) and move the tractor under it's own power. For example: Walking beside it or pushing it if stuck!! Just make sure you shut off the PTO when you get off!! I hope this helps someone else out. I have found it greatly helps my cutting duties. It has about 355 hours now and has never had to have a belt or spindle replacement mostly due to constant maintenance and also try to avoid mowing big rocks.I have replaced the steering drag link once.that could use grease fittings in the ball joints, i do try to keep this one lubricated. About 300 hours it blew a head gasket. I found alot of information on line about others having trouble with the 27 hp engine.replaced both sides (gaskets and head bolts). Its working fine again. I use this tractor year around.mowing.snowblowing.hauling firewood on an 8 ft trailor.and also using to haul my lobster traps 800 of them to the wharf.its really a work horse and im very satisfied. Also a vertical shaft horizontal cylinder engine like that is noted for smoking one reason is because the bottom wall of the cylinder is close the the oil level in the crankcase and if the tractor is inclined ( headed down hill).A good idea is daily. Also for extra traction i run rear wheel weights year around 110 pounds and chains in the early spring when hauling wood.very seldom have a problem but when i did get is stuck.Hope this will help someone happy mowing. I think I should have left it alone. The mower only has 31 hours on the 26 hp Kohler cv730 engine. So far I have had to replace the head gaskets do to the excessive smoking. It had 25 hours on the meter. Now that it has 31 hours on it, I am replacing the camshaft due to bad set of lifters. The exhaust lobe on cylinder 2 is flat as a pancake. It no longer work the exhaust valve. I also had carb problems due to the gum chemical thats in the plastic gas tank walls. I have seen other craftsmans models with this gum from the tanks. Its not from the gasoline, but from the plastic tanks. As soon as I replace this camshaft and lifters. This mower will be going up forsale. I am very disappointed In Kohler and Craftsman. I have another 42 in craftsman mower with a briggs and stranton, but this will be my last Craftsman I will buy. I hope this will help someone in the near future. If you are sitting behind the steering wheel (it has a 54 inch deck and a 27 horse power) with the hood raised their is a black cylinder-like object that sit to the right of the air-filter compartment. It has something to do with oil because it seems to leak from this area. It also has been blowing black smoke. The cylinder-like object appears to have a hose that goes into the air-filter compartment as well. It has been maintained fairly well. The body is in excelent shape not even 1 scratch. Not sure what year it is but it only has 280 hours on it. But i cant find what they go for new. I had to drain all the old gas out and fix a rear flat tire(slime). I mowed with it for about 6 hours today and dident have a single problem. Did i get a good deal. What mite this mower be worth. When it gets hot the transmission growls and quits. It had been great for me. I have had it for 4 years and the only thing that I;ve done to it is change tires and a now battery about a year age. I see that some people are complaining about the way that there tracktor has been for them, but I guess I was one of the most fortunate ones couse mine turned out to be GREAT!!!!!.So now I think that I want to sell it and get a now one but I don't know how much to sell it for????? I mow 5 acres and cultivate 1 mile of tree line. I pull a 4 foot cultivator to maintain the tree line. I have never had a problem with the Kohler or the transmission. However, the mower deck has been a major problem. I've replaced nearly every part on the deck at least once. Belts are also a major expense, however I found that the John Deere dealer has replacements much cheaper than Sears. I've replaced the stock tires with ATV wheels and tires. Do not purchase this machine unless you have a very good welder. You will need it. Sears has been no help. If you buy this tractor, you are on your own. I have heard that this could be head gaskets and bolts and also rings. Can anyone help with this matter. I have about 40 hours on it. I mow 3 acres of grass. The machine has not been put under severe ussage. So far it has served me well and no problems. It is a huskarvana machine manufactured for Sears. The cost new from Sears was 3500.00 I have done the normal maintenance just like any other machine. It has been kept in a heated garage. I do not leave gas in the unit during off seasons and do run it out of gas. I have installed a gas cut off valve in the line and do shut it off when not in use during the cutting season. It has brrn a very good machine. It has been totally rebuitl. It ran like a washer full of marbles, but I loved the size, the 27 HP KOHLER Engine. Reset the valve clearances, change a couple hoses, filters, tore rear end apart, checked cleaned, new belts, and this baby will run a long time. I want something I can tear apart easily, and quickly,m and this fills the bill. I run and misuse my tractors for all kinds of jobs, and SEARS tractors just keep on ticking. Compare prices, say John Deere, I'll keep the difference in my pocket. 27 HP runs strong, does puff a tad on occassion, but I keep it cleaned, serviced, best oil I can buy, and it's a great machine for the price. All parts are just a heartbeat away, on line. I usually customize mine a little, and I'm sure this one won't be any different. This spring, quick jump on the battery, purrs like a kitten. I have a smaller old model Sears I pulled my Dodge 4X4 to my shop, when it stopped running by my home, burned the belt off, but I got it done. Subject. Comments: You must include your email address above to receive this notification. Send a Houzz Gift Card. I just changed plugs, oil and filter, air filter and replaced the battery. I ran it to warm up couple of minutes. Turn it off rechecked oil level. Drove it out to start cutting grass and tried to engaged blades and it died. Checked for power in switches with no luck. I jumped started it by running a wire from battery to starter. I could not find a fuss by run hand down wires. Is the fuss on the engine. Or does it have one. There is no power to lights, or going to starter switch. Can someone help me find the problem. I have no diagrams. Oh, I did jump the seat safety switch(dead mans switch)did not help. We need the technical model number. Usually to be found under or near the seat. 9 digit number, typically begins like 917.xxxxxx. Find and post that number and we will be able to view the online manual. The fuse holder is under the dash, will be a automotive style holder and fuse. Also this is a Kohler engine and probably has a solenoid starter, so the solenoid is on the engine. There will be a wire, think it is blue, that hooks to this small cylinder on the side of the engine near the starter, I've seen those come loose or fall off, without it the solenoid won't close. Easy fix. The engine quiting upon initial start is not unusual either, these Kohler's are cold blooded, need a minute or two of warm up before they'll handle much load, sometimes help to keep on a partial choke when you engage the electric clutch. It starts and runs ok. It still will not engage the blades but stays running. I replaced the PTO switch. Did not help. I am hoping it is not the electric clutch. Where does the PTO get its pwr. From the ignition? Could that be my problem. Deck blades and electric clutch are clear of clutter. Belts are tight. Fuse did not re-blow after starting. Any ideas? Find it - may be also involved with yer PTO prob. Anyway, with help from this posting I found the 30 amp fuse and it was blown so I replaced it. I jump started the tractor (I know I need a new battery) and it seemed to run fine. I pulled out of the garage, set the brake and hopped off to put the bagger and chute back on. The RPM guage needle was jumping around erratically with the ignition switch in the accessory position. The seat switch ohmed out good, I have 12 volts at the soleinoid (positive cable to ground). And it corresponds to what you describe. By the diagram in the owner's manual, you should be able to vacate the seat while the engine is running if you lock the brake pedal down. If it was a problem in the seat switch, the engine would have quit while you were driving the tractor, or, it never would have started in the first place.Does this sound like a starter problem or solenoid or bad relay or something else. The RPM needle is still acting erratic in the accessory position, which leads me to believe it may be a relay issue, but I don't know for sure.I have to ask because I don't see any reference at all to any of the things I pointed out. So far, you mentioned putting in the new battery.Do you mean you see the needle move one time when the key reverts to the run position. You don't have to buy that relay at Sears or at a lawn equipment shop.I thought it strange they'd both go at the same time, but they did. I've mowed 3 or 4 times since replacing and it runs like a new critter. Hopefully, this will help someone else with the same symptoms. Happy mowing. Who Made My Craftsman. Who Made My Craftsman? To find who made your lawn tractor, etc., look at the first three numbers before the decimal point. Older products may have Electrolux or American Yard Products (AYP) which were acquired by Husqvarna years ago. Roper was the company before AYP. It also does not work for Canadian, European or Austrailian models. To find the age of your Craftsman lawn tractor, riding mower or zero-turn mower you will need to use the serial number. It’s usually located on a tag or decal under the seat. The third and fourth numbers are the day. The fifth and sixth numbers are the year. Attachments with model number beginning with 486 are made by Agri-Fab. These attachments “generally” fit riding mowers built between 2005 and 2017. For Example, there are still quite a few Craftsman 2-stage snow blower attachments floating around with the prefix 842. This company, Haban went out of business in 1997. It will not fit any tractor made after that date and you can not find parts for it anywhere except auction sites like eBay. My rough guess yours is 1988-1991. I base that guess on the copyright of the owners manual. You need the serial number to figure it out. Here is the process from this article. It also does not work for Canadian, European or Austrailian models. The fifth and sixth numbers are the year. “ Serial number is 034498. Do you know what the Lot number indicates?? Thanks!! Most of that information was destroyed long before they moved to Hoffman Estates. The only other way to find the year is: Using your model number find an operator’s manual. Many are available online through various websites. Most of them have a copyright date on the last page. That will give you an idea when the tractor was first made. FOund a manual but doesn’t list accessories. Trying to find a bagger, or the part number that fits. Would appreciate any direction. Thanks Keep up the great work! I am wondering if you can help. I have a 18.5 HP LT2000 Craftsman Lawn Tractor 917.274761 purchased in 2004. I have since posted the attachment for sale. I have an interested customer with lawn tractor model 917.275350. If our tractors share the same frame, the unit should be compatible. I believe Craftsman switched lawn tractor OEM around ’05. I am trying to determine if the frames are the same since that is critical for compatibility of the mounting brackets. I want to make sure so I can give the prospective customer accurate info. Please advise and thank in advance for your time. You will not find a bagger for it. Also a ballpark would help. Serial Number: The first two numbers are the month. The third and fourth numbers are the day. The fifth and sixth numbers are the year. I’m trying to buy a rear bagger for it. Thank you It should start with 917. I’m looking to find a date on an old Murray as well (502.254970). If you have a source for the owners manuals, any chance you could pass it along? I just Google the number with Sears Craftsman Manual after the number. Usually, and a few others will pop up with the manual. I view the first and last page of the manual and most of the time there is a copyright date. Since most tractors were only made for 1-3 years you can get a guess to the age.My guess is that its between the years 1981-1985. The only other twin to mine that I have ever seen is on Youtube check out this site: or Once you’ve whatched the Youtube video you will see what mine looks like he is missing the mower deck.If it is you can go through all the parts diagrams for the 502 tractors here:. So you may find the part on a diagram but you may not be able to order it. You can Google search or eBay search the part number and someone else may still have it. These products are made by Husqvarna. Older products may have Electrolux or American Yard Products (AYP) which were acquired by Husqvarna years ago. Roper was the company before AYP.” Model number 536.255880 and next to it is a code number 207603218 with that info do you have a general guess of what year it is and any other information you have??? It was made by Noma around 1992. Here are the parts diagrams for it.. Most of the parts are no longer available. Actually, I have an American Lawn Mower and model no 1304-14. Can you say to me Who made my lawn mower? Also, do the same search and click the images tab on Google search. Many times you’ll find a listing or image and the owner lists the model number. If it has the same specs and hood as your’s the model number will work for you to get parts. So now we just say it was made by Husqvarna. The formula is icy aren’t working. Here’s what I have Model 917.380210 Lot M093086 Serial 00961 I have been pushing this more around for about 25 years, just curious what year it was actually made. Thanks for all your help. Im trying to find out what year it is. When they closed their doors it disappeared. That said, The dealer should be able to match the part by how it looks. The frames are too light and you will break your tractor within a year or two. What other Craftsman models will the Bercomac attach to. Thanks John But I suggest contacting Bercomac and see if your snow blower will still fit a newer tractor with an attachment kit from them. You could try mytractorforum.com, show pictures and ask those guys. It is Canadian? Bring your old battery to Batteries Plus or Interstate Batteries. They will be able to help you find the right one. Any suggestions for finding a replacement, or should I start fabricating? The last time it was used was for a Zero-turn.But I can’t tell what makes it different. 486.248391 I’m confused. The new kit comes with all the brackets for your tractor, older tractors and 247.It may have been attached to an older tractor and the owner threw the brackets you need away. I can’t tell who made that engine from the parts list but there is a nameplate on the engine itself. You will need all the numbers off that plate to get parts. Onan or Tecumseh are both out of business but you may be able to get parts on eBay and tuneup parts from a repair shop. Thank you The deck shell itself is no longer available but all the other parts for it are still available check the parts and owner’s manual here: Craftsman Garden Tractor Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. I found this on Google and you can use it to figure out if you have a Murry built or AYP (Husqvarna). If you have a Murry you got a rare one. “I have done some research and have found that the Murray built Compaion tractors have minor differences then the AYP built Companion tractors. The Murray built Companion tractors have an angled shifter area and slightly different hood, fenderpan, and running boards then the AYP machines. The AYP built Companion tractors have a flat shifter area and slightly different hood, fenderpan, and running boards then the Murray built machines. The Companion tractors are pretty darn hard to find but finding a Murray built Companion is next to impossible. BBY the Companion you posted (not the patent drawings) is an AYP unit.” From your info I’m gonna say it’s an AYP. Thanks once again. It is a GVT 16 Twin model 917.253721 I need mower blades for mower deck 917.253644 part number 1926103. Made by AYP It has 3 blades about 15 inches long. What year is this mower. Are there any part numbers on the deck or blades? Will most 42? craftsman decks fit this tractor. I’ve read something about cables vs linkage, and I’m not sure how to Identify what I need with no deck to look at for reference. I’m sure there must be a way to know what decks should fit, but I’m having difficulty finding that info online. Thanks for any help Craftsman completely switched decks on all the tractors between 2002 and 2005. No decks with the 3 point mounts built after that time will fit. The model number in ours is 917272440. Sears has used these numbers for many different tractors over the years. The model number is what you need. Go to Sears PartsDirect. Type in your model number and parts diagrams, parts listings and operator’s manuals will pop up. Sometimes the numbers are hard to make out. The first 5 number after the. Also, the 2 is not important. Thanks. The formula does not seem to work on this. Help a guy out, I think it’s either 1989 or 1990 but not sure. The manual for your tractor doesn’t even have a copyright date so I can’t even guess on your age. Looking at the hood it could be anywhere from 82 to 89. When was it made, and what is it worth with a bagger. Thanks, Norm You need to look under the seat and use the serial and model number to figure out when it was made. Possible 81-82 ? What are your thoughts So, it’s definitely a mid-80’s tractor. Here is the engine to deck belt: Engine to deck Here is the belt on the deck itself: On deck belt I am having trouble finding a bagger for it.
