cosco car seat instruction manualPay close attention to the information about your vehicle’s seat belt system, and how to “lock” the seat belt. Also look for the location of the tether anchors, and directions on how to use this vehicle hardware. Be careful not to have any twists in the seat belts. This step is very important as it limits forward movement in a crash. Harness straps should lie flat, not twisted, and be placed through the slots located at or above your child’s shoulders. These slots are reinforced to prevent the seat from failing in a crash. Read your car seat’s instruction manual carefully. The harness is snug enough when you cannot pinch any extra material at the shoulder.Always buckle the child in the seat first, and then place coats or blankets over the harness. This holds the harness straps in place on the child’s chest and shoulders. Always read the car seat and vehicle manuals for weight and height limits. If your child reaches the weight limit for the tether, but is still within the weight and height limits of the car seat, use the car seat without the tether. Connect the LATCH hooks on each side of the car seat to the anchors located in your vehicle.http://www.lecourbe.dk/userfiles/ductsox-design-manual.xml Consult your vehicle owner's manual for the location of the anchors. Pull up on the loop of the belt while pressing firmly on the car seat to tighten the LATCH belt. Forward-Facing Feed the LATCH belt through the upper slot in the side of the car seat shell and out through the upper slot on the other side. Place the Alpha Omega car seat flush against the seat back of a rear seat in your vehicle. Recline the seat if needed to make it flush with the back of the seat. Fasten the LATCH hooks on both sides of the car seat onto the anchors in your vehicle seat. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for locations of the anchors. Push firmly on the Alpha Omega seat with your knee while pulling hard on the loop of the LATCH belt to tighten it. Belt-Positioning Booster Fasten the LATCH belt hooks together behind the Alpha Omega car seat. Remove the seat base before installing the seat in your vehicle. Recline the seat to the lowest setting and push the tab down on right side of base while pushing on and removing the bar from the other side. Pull the recline lever to lift the seat off its base. Remove the harness by unfastening it from the T-shaped splitter plate on the back of the car seat and feeding it out through the slots to the front of the seat. Place the booster seat in the vehicle with the seat back flush against the back of the vehicle seat. Thread the safety belt through the notch in the belt positioning guide so that the belt lies against the child's chest without obstructing her face or neck. Pull up on the safety belt to tighten it. Tips Always check that the seat is installed properly before using it. For rear-facing or forward-facing installations, the seat should not move more than one inch in any direction if installed correctly. Your car seat has an expiration date printed on it. You must cease using the car seat once that date has passed. Warnings The harness must be removed when using the seat as a booster, and the LATCH connectors must not be used. Well suited for travel Not only that, it: Fits tiny infants well Is narrow Is fairly compact In addition, it’s available in many different and very cute patterns. It’s the perfect car seat for many situations. And it includes a cupholder. Upright Installation Cosco Scenera NEXT grommets When the Scenera NEXT was first released, the rules around how upright the seat can be installed were pretty loose. Since that time, Cosco has clarified exactly how upright the Scenera NEXT can be installed. Cosco Scenera NEXT grommets When it’s installed rear facing for a child who can sit unassisted, the grommets located on the bottom of the shell MUST make contact with the vehicle seat. Learn more about this update directly from the manufacturer. UPDATE: Newer versions of the Scenera NEXT (mid 2019 date of manufacture) do not allow the seat to be installed more upright than the level line when rear facing. Be sure to follow the manual that came with your seat. Patterns Cosco Scenera NEXT in Broadway Dots pattern At current writing, the NEXT is manufactured in at least 20 different colors and patterns. Though not all may be available at the same time, there is sure to be a pattern to fit everyone’s taste. Cupholder Cosco Scenera NEXT cupholder The detachable cupholder may be attached to either side of the seat or removed entirely (recommended when attempting to install seats next to each other). Optional Harness Covers Cosco Scenera NEXT Harness Covers Photo courtesy CPST Tamar Yellin Harness covers are now available for purchase by contacting Cosco. Rear Facing Installation: Lower Anchors Cosco Scenera NEXT lower anchor installation technique It’s a bold claim but we’re happy to make it: the Cosco Scenera NEXT is among the easiest of any to install rear facing. To install rear facing with the lower anchors, make sure the lower anchor strap is in the rear facing belt path. Look on your seat for the label indicating the rear facing belt path. Hook the lower anchor connectors on the car seat onto the lower anchors in the vehicle. The easiest way to tighten the lower anchor strap is to peel back the cover on the side with the adjuster. Pull the adjuster strap through the hole in the plastic shell, as shown in the photo. Installation: Vehicle Seat Belt Cosco Scenera NEXT seatbelt installation technique To install rear facing with the vehicle seat belt, route the belt through the rear facing belt path and buckle it in. Remove all slack from the lap portion of the vehicle seat belt by pressing down into the car seat right where the child’s bottom will go. Once all of the slack is removed from the seat belt, lock the vehicle seat belt into child seat mode. In most cars, this is done by pulling the seat belt out all the way until it doesn’t go anymore, then slowly feeding it back into the vehicle. You’ll hear a clicking noise that confirms the seat belt is now in child seat mode. From that point, feed the seat belt back into the vehicle while maintaining pressure on the car seat until there’s less than one inch of movement at the belt path. In some cars, you may need to pull back the NEXT cover to tighten the shoulder belt. In other cars, you can pull the belt out to the side as shown in the photo, then feed the slack back into the retractor. This alternate strap routing on the underside of the seat must be used when the straps are in the lowest slots; otherwise, the harness would not be able to get tight enough to pass the pinch test. The manual directs us that for rear facing, we should always use the shoulder slot at or below the child’s shoulders. The second slot up on the Scenera NEXT would be the appropriate slot for some newborns and small infants with a longer torso. According to the manual, the newborn routing is not allowed to be used for this slot, but on some thinner infants, the straps cannot be tightened enough without the newborn routing. Dorel has confirmed that if this is the case, the newborn routing can be used on the second slot. The manufacturer will be changing the manual to reflect this update. This change will ensure a snug fit on all of the seat’s tiniest occupants. Cosco Scenera NEXT newborn crotch buckle routing Follow the instructions in the manual carefully to change the straps to newborn routing. The crotch buckle must be rerouted as well. Taking phone pictures along the way helps. And you can move on to the next section of this review. But if your seat was made prior to May 2016, keep reading. Seats made prior to May 2016 do not have this 1 inch rule. That is, they are outgrown by torso height when the child’s head reaches the top of the seat. We appreciated this fact. For some kids, this can mean even another year’s use of the seat, as long as the other limits have not been met. However, Dorel (the parent company of Cosco) changed this rule to standardize the Scenera NEXT with most other rear facing seats on the market. For some Scenera NEXTs made prior to May 2016, the manual does indicate that a “1 inch rule” is in effect. Dorel confirmed this was a typo for these seats only. The seat fit her beautifully. The Scenera NEXT fits her like a glove. She was so happy in the seat, posing for the camera. One Year Old Cosco Scenera NEXT one year old fit This is my son; he just turned one, and he’s 19 pounds and 29.5 inches. He has a long torso, so here we begin to see the limitations of the Scenera NEXT rear facing. Although he’s only one, it may not be much more than a year before he outgrows the seat by torso height, which happens when his head is less than an inch below the top of the seat. Two Year Old This model is almost 2.5 years old. She weighs 25 pounds and is 36 inches tall. She’s still got some room to grow in her NEXT. Three Year Old Cosco Scenera NEXT 3 year old rear facing fit This little is three years old, is 37 inches tall and weighs 29 pounds. Her torso is not that much taller than our one year old model’s! As always, this shows that kids come in all shapes and sizes. She still fits in the NEXT, and in fact it’s her regular seat, although her family also takes it on plane trips. (See below!) Forward Facing Lower Anchor Weight Limit There is in effect no lower anchor weight limit for this seat because the forward facing weight limit is 40 pounds, and the seat itself weighs about 7 pounds. That combined is well below the 65 pound maximum for the lower anchors. Positioning Cosco Scenera NEXT Forward Facing installation Installing the Scenera NEXT forward facing can be a little tricky because it’s not always clear which part of the bottom of the Scenera NEXT should be touching the vehicle seat. We’re including the illustration from the manual to make this more clear. Installation: Lower Anchors Cosco Scenera NEXT forward facing installation angle To install with the lower anchors, move them to the forward facing belt path. Hook the lower anchor connectors on and tighten. As was the case with the rear facing installation, I found the vehicle seat belt to be easier than lower anchors. Be sure to use the top tether for all forward facing installations, whether they’re with the lower anchors or the vehicle seat belt. Installation: Vehicle Seat Belt Cosco Scenera NEXT forward facing installation To install with the vehicle seat belt, thread the vehicle seat belt through the forward facing belt path, lock the belt and tighten. It may be necessary to pull back the cover to get the correct leverage to tighten. Fit to Child Forward Facing This seat is often outgrown forward facing before it’s outgrown rear facing, and here’s why: The straps must be above the shoulders for forward facing. However, the highest strap slot is lower than the shoulders of most three year olds. Truly, there is no reason to use the Scenera NEXT forward facing, especially given the 40 pound weight limit. However, if it does fit your child, meaning the straps are above the shoulders, and the child is over 2 years old, then it is safe. But then, I located one. She’s 3 years old, weighs 30 pounds and is 36 inches tall. The harness straps are above her shoulders, and she’s got just a bit of room to grow in the seat. Travel! Cosco Scenera NEXT 3 year old comfy and rear facing on the plane. Cosco Scenera NEXT ready for the airport We’d be remiss if we didn’t include a section on travel in this review. The Scenera NEXT is an incredible travel seat. It’s lightweight, it fits under larger strollers, and it can be hung on the handle of a smaller stroller using the top tether strap. It can be placed inside an umbrella stroller, or it can be toted in the extra seat of a double stroller. It installs at any angle for a child who can sit up, enabling it to fit in even the smallest airplane seats. (One note of caution: it may not fit on an airplane at the full recline needed for newborns and small infants.) Seat belt installation is quick and easy, which is so important for those airport curbside installations. Three Across Because the Scenera NEXT is only 17 inches wide, it can fit in some tight spots where other seats cannot. It’s a great choice for many three across situations. Important Information: Where to Find Cosco Scenera NEXT expiration Cosco Scenera NEXT date of manufacture Expiration: Etched into the back of the NEXT is the fact that it expires 8 years after the date of manufacture. The date of manufacture can be found on a label on the right side of the seat, near the rear facing belt path. Cosco Scenera NEXT manual storage Manual Storage: The Scenera NEXT features three tabs to hold the manual on the top of the back of the seat. Cosco Scenera NEXT FAA approval label FAA Approval: The FAA approval can be found on a label on the left side of the seat near the rear facing belt path. The Scenera NEXT is a great car seat to take on an airplane. It makes an excellent travel seat as well since it’s so lightweight. We recommend it for some or all of the rear facing portion of your child’s car seat career. We'll assume you're ok with this, but you can opt-out if you wish. We've only ever used these seats in the rear-facing position so I can't speak to the front-facing position. (7) The zebra print is very cute. CONS: Just one - depending on your style, this could be a maker or breaker - it's a very no-frills seat. It's a hard shell with a flimsy fabric covering it - no foam, no extra padding, none of the bells and whistles that the expensive high-end brands offer. I was a bit wary at first because it doesn't look all that comfortable, but my 16-month-old is content and comfortable in it (my toddler is very tall and has more than enough room in the seat). We are very happy with our new Cosco Scenera NEXT and will continue to use this brand as a backup for our main seat and when traveling. I selected this car seat to use for my toddler. Although he is within the manufacturers guidelines for height and weight he did not fit properly in this seat. I would not recommend this seat for a toddler due to sizing issues. The design of the fabric is very nice and the cover does come off for washing. Moving the straps to the different areas is easy and only takes a few minutes. The cover is very thin and there is not any padding on the seat making it very hard and I think it would be uncomfortable for someone to sit in for very long. The issue I had with my son fitting in the seat properly was related to the straps, I moved them to the highest shoulder position and moved the buckle that goes between the legs to furthest position. I also made sure the straps were loosened all the way. When I buckled him in the straps the bottom pieces push down on his legs, I think that the strap between the legs should have been made longer and then possibly this wouldn't have happened. The seat might work for an infant however I didn't use it for one. Again even if your child fits in this seat, it is very hard and I don't think they will be very comfortable in it. I got this to put in my car so I did not have to keep exchanging my daughters back and forth. This seat is wonderful. The material is soft and all those sticky treats wash right off. There are no crevices that food or liquid can get stuck into, plus the cover easily comes off so you can throw it into the washing machine. Just remember not to put into the dryer. Put it back on the seat while wet and let it dry. If you put it in the dryer it may shrink. This seats buckle lick is nice. No puzzle configuration to snap it together. Snap one side in and then the other, so easy. The straps come preset to the smallest setting and is so easy to adjust. There is just a T lock in the back to connect straps to if you need to readjust. Strapping it into the vehicle was very easy also. Over all this is a easy seat and if your child is onthe first or small position you may need to get a head guard because it is sort of wide. I do think the manufacture may think about including this in the next upgrade. See more Reviewed by ILuvsales2 ILuvsales2 Top 1000 contributor Helpful. I really like how the adjustment strap is in the front instead of the back of the car seat, I find it easier to adjust that way. I also like the the adjustment strap is just one strap instead of two so it is less fuss. My daughter fits well into the seat and it is secure. She has plenty of growing room, so this seat will last awhile. It reclines for the use on older infants and will adjust to several positions until going into full up right position. It can be used forward facing or rear facing, but is a bit big for a small car in the rear reclining position. The straps sit comfortably against my daughters shoulders, and she can fall asleep in it without discomfort. The weight limit is enough to get me to the next stage, a booster seat, without having to buy one in between. Overall a very good product for the price being asked and would recommend this to my mom friends. See more Reviewed by faithngrace2 faithngrace2 Spark Reviewer Helpful. January 7, 2015 The car seat is very cute, my daughter loves it. I live in Arkansas, so people here love the hunting designs. The car seat comes with a black cup holder and a booklet to explain each piece of the car seat. I found it strange that it did not come wrapped up in plastic or in the original box. It came in the shipping box without any protection to prevent starches and scarring to the product while being shipped. It also comes with a warranty form. The things myself, as a parent, like about this car seat is that it is adjustable and can be used facing forward or backwards. It comes with cushion on each side of the headrest for protection. I was disappointed when I read the weight limit was 40 pounds, which means I will not be using it for long. It is easy to adjust the scraps to make it for comfortable and fitting for the child. I do not have any real complaints for the product itself. They just need to find a better shipping method for the product. January 20, 2015 Good car seat for the grandchildren when they visit. We have had three children of our own and have had a few car seats, many of them from Cosco and a few that were not Cosco brand. This is a seat is easy to setup and put in the vehicle. Also, it is very easy to clean. The fabric is washer and dryer safe. This will be great for the unfortunate mishaps. The construction of the car seat seams comparable to other brands we have owned for our children. The padding on the seat cover could be a bit thicker. The seat boasts side impact protection. The side impact areas are not that well-padded. I worry about the child’s head when it hits the sides. We will have to invest in some padding ourselves. We have installed it in both our car and our truck. The car is a small sedan and it fits very well in both forward and reverse setup. Our truck is a Chevy with the extended cab. The seat fits well front facing, but does not do well in the reverse facing setup. Overall the car seat is a good buy. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a seat to protect their child.
