The answer lies in Cort’s primary role in one of the industry’s most poorly kept “secrets”: the Cort factory in South Korea (and more recently, Indonesia and China) manufactures instruments for many big-time American and European brands, helping builders to flesh out their product line with low-cost import models. The B5 Plus AS is an affordable 5-string with many of the touches previously associated with more expensive basses. It fuses a selection of natural- finished woods with active electronics and Bartolini soapbars, and to the untrained eye has the same aesthetic vibe as many boutique instruments. Bargain boutique The B5 makes an excellent first impression. Our tester’s open-grained ash body was finished with a thin lacquer, allowing me to feel the subtle undulations of the wood under my hand and imparting the instrument with an organic vibe. Long a feature of high-end instruments, laminated necks made of contrasting wood species can help mitigate the effects of weather. The matching headstock cap is another elegant touch. I was generally impressed with the B5’s hardware, particularly its use of Hipshot Ultralite tuners, which are among the best. The generic Cort-branded bridge did its job, too, but the plastic nut wasn’t up to the generally solid quality of the rest of the bass. I also wasn’t especially impressed with the skill of whoever put on its strings, as they left only a wrap-or-so on the post and neglected to push the string down to ensure good contact at the nut. The instrument’s overall fit-and-finish was hard to fault. It’s obvious that Cort has been at the building game for a while. The frets were well installed, with no sharp edges or poorly filed crowns. The neck joint was solid and tight, and even the control cavity (which is often a dead giveaway for a cheap bass) was relatively neat and tidy. Speaking of the control cavity, it houses a Markbass MB-1 preamp. It’s the first time I’ve encountered an onboard system from the Italian manufacturer better known for its amps. In the Cort, the MB-1 is paired with Bartolini MK1 pickups, nearly ubiquitous on many a faux-boutique import bass. Playability is a subjective thing, given the diverse spectrum of bodies, hands, and personal taste out there. That said, given my playing style, I was not especially enamored of the approach Cort took with the B5. There was nothing objectively wrong with the bass; it balanced well, was decently light, and had a nice neck contour. Rather, the string spacing was way too narrow for me, both at the bridge and nut. Pick-style players or those who don’t dig in with their plucking hand may prefer it to a wider spacing, though. The fingerboard radius is also quite flat—again, whether this feels right is up to you. All arounder The B5 proved itself a capable bass throughout testing, offering a useful array of tones. With everything set flat, the Cort’s intrinsic sound was bright and wiry, but with a healthy low-end response and present and articulate mids. The Markbass preamp is well voiced, with each EQ band offering a useful bump at thoughtfully chosen broad-Q frequency centers. With the bridge pickup engaged, I found myself cutting the highs to get a full-throated Jaco-esque sound. The treble filter is well suited to the purpose. The pickup-blended tone is solid and full-bodied, but for the slight scoop in the lower mids that helps make the Cort an impressive slapper. Dialing in the neck pickup yielded a solid approximation of the woolly and robust J-style-bass sound. The B5’s clarity made chordal work ring clear, and the B string was admirably beefy and well balanced with the rest of the instrument. The B5 is a handsome and broadly capable bass for a player on a budget who craves the look of a higher-end bass. It has hardware a good class or two above what you'd expect for this sort of price and the sound is fabulous.Electrics, basses, acoustics - we've seen a steady procession of top class products at excellent prices in the past few years. But can the new GB74 JJ bass keep the Cort flag waving. Dan Veall tried to find some flaws. This is obvious from the moment you pick up the GB74 JJ and spot the official, lightweight Hipshot tuners - this is quality hardware. Cort reports that its bridge is machined from solid steel and I have to say looks bold, if but a little less curvy than other examples of high mass bridges that we’ve seen. Again, at the price point, I can't complain. For this sort of money you might have expected to find a cheap cast bridge and this is a cut above that, make no mistake! In fact I’ve played basses considerably higher in price that I felt were let down by the finish on the edge of the fretboard and which were inferior to this one's. You could of course argue that there’s no point having a pick guard at all, but for me personally, I prefer the benefits they bring. Again, Cort has gone for some really nice touches - I mentioned the fretwork earlier on this 22 fret example (yes, that high E is important to me ha ha!) but also the truss rod adjusted wheel. More of this please. No messing with removing pick guards, so easy to access and tidy too. Full marks here too, Cort. I am inclined to agree with all that Cort say on its website about these. Interestingly, when I grabbed the electronics manual off of Cort’s website I was very interested to see that the EQ circuit on board is a Sandberg 2-band system according to the download. Clear with just a nice dollop of low end thump! Is there anything I’d like to change. Well not really, though colour choices are limited, but certainly not boring. You can, if you want more options, select the GB74JH that features an MM style pickup in the bridge instead of the usual Jazz configuration. Then, just to mix things up even more, Cort delivers us another favour in the shape of a 5 string version, the GB75JJ, so maybe you'd rather have one of those.It has hardware a good class or two above what you'd expect for this sort of price and the sound is fabulous. As a hardworking bass for a player who wants that traditional image, it's hard to see how you could go wrong here. What are the necks like on those. I have a P bass, but I've realized I really prefer the Jazz neck (I've noticed some Ps coming with J necks now days). As a bass player who really doesn't use effects that often, except to mess around with, experiment, and get inspired by (but not in a band context), I feel as though a good, functional preamp is about as close as I'm going to get to effect-bliss. I really loved it, and I found that the SpectraComp is really value for money (I owned the it even before buying the SpectraDrive). However, I won a competition for which the prize money was 400 quid and I was curious to see what a better preamp sounds like. I wanted something with more features, so I ended up on the GK Plex.I really loved the sound and I can get behind the GK sound.First, if you turn up the compressor to anything useful it hisses like mad (it sounds like it's boosting the higher frequencies far too much). Second, as soon as you have another pedal before the GK Plex it gave off a terrible electronic buzz. Apparently this was supposed to be fixed with a firmware update, which I did, of course, but to no avail. Luckily you could fix this by putting your additional effects in the effects loop instead. Unfortunately, the gain in the effects loop of these sort of preamp pedals (GK Plex and the EBS MicroBass 3 included) seems to be a little to hot for some analogue pedals (like my Fender Pour Over Env Filter) so these pedals functioned sub-optimally. It was noisy, as I mentioned above, but also a little too dramatic for my liking. I whittled it down to:From a pure spec perspective, the only thing the EBS lacks is impulse response, but that's not too much of a biggie for me right now. Here are some of my thoughts after using it for about 4 weeks:I take the perspective that you can do A LOT with compression, but when in the context of evening out your playing, giving you more sustain, and helping you punch through the mix, something easy-to-use and subtle will win my heart on a pedal. I know my way around compressors as I've done studio work, recorded and mixed my band's music, and have spent far too many hours learning the ins and outs of various compression algorithms, techniques, and audio quality. That said, something that does the job well and consistently is a boon. The 'COMP' knob on the EBS is super subtle, and only really jumps out at you when you drive it to full. That in itself might turn you off this compressor, but I think they've done a stellar job of it. Having the sweepable mid range is smart and I've found it useful. It also has a 'char' switch for scooped mids and a 'bright' switch. I've read that the scooped mids switch is a bit much for some, but I always like scooping mids when I'm noodling by myself and this does a fine job of giving me that sound I like. One thing I dislike is that the frequency boost on the bass knob feels a little off what appeals to my ear, but that's a small thing. I have yet to find a bass overdrive that I like to hear in headphones (which is what I use a lot, given that lockdown has me playing with my wife working nearby!), so I'm looking forward to applying this in a band context. I have found that hitting the drive switch typically gives an overall volume drop when blended with the clean channel, and that the level needs to be pushed on the drive section, throwing the mix out of whack. It is a fine control, but a tad bit annoying to find the sweet spot. I should note that it has a 'gain' knob as well as high and low gain types, and 'thin' versus 'deep' drive types with a 'tone' knob. It really is super customisable. I'm not a massive bass drive fan, but this should serve me if I become one!So, for anything pre you should just put it earlier in the chain. Note that I have yet to find a pedalboard power supply that can meet its needs. Thankfully, however, a standalone power supply is provided. That said, there really does seem to be a feel of space and headroom with this thing.
