The Standard Folding Typewriter Nos.1 was one of the all-aluminum predecessors to the Corona No.3. Frank's small company was producing a fantastic product with boundless potential and that hadn't gone unnoticed. Soon folding typewriters like the Bijou, Fox, Hammond Multiplex and several others entered the market. Even the Gourland seems to have been vying for some of Corona's market share. They were more-likely-than-not designed with Petermann's and Rose's typewriter serving as a blueprint. In 1909, Frank's startup had a great business model that caught the eye of a well connected investor named Benn Conger (1856 - 1922). Conger would eventually buy the company and, almost immediately, relocate production to Groton, NY. The marketing and sales teams were now tasked with the job of selling this truly portable design. And sell it they did. First, they changed the name of the machine from Standard Folding Typewriter to Corona because the original name didn't translate well in some foreign markets while in others the typewriter may have been rebranded such as the Coronet, Franconia or Piccola. Sales of the No.3 soared immediately from 6,000 units in 1912 to over 150,000 annually by 1920. Among the many options, they were offered in several colors, in a multitude of languages and with a variety of cases. About 675,000 of these little dynamos were manufactured in total from 1912 to 1941 with very few changes. During the first few years in Groton, a 2nd model of the aluminum Standard Folding Typewriter was produced, the No.2. Then, a loyal employee that made the move to Groton during the 1909 transition, Otto Petermann (1872 - 1961), was named lead designer for the coming model, the No.3. Petermann got to work applying for several patents in 1909 and 1910, improving on Rose's original design. The resulting prototype was inspired and ambitious but management felt it was too costly to produce. A scaled-back version was produced instead. The final product, with its curvier black frame, was nothing short of genius. In 1912 the Corona No.3 was ready for retail. At the time, Conger was a politician facing a disapproving constituency after The Groton Carriage Company vacated its factory which was the result of the ever expanding automobile industry and subsequent diminishing demand for horse drawn carriages. By moving the typewriter business Conger had purchased to Groton, the savy state senator provided short-term construction work for his voters while the new factory was being erected and long-term manufacturing jobs from the actual production of the typewriters. As it sits, this typewriter is a lovely piece of typewriter history that would look great on display, but is not currently functioning. A quick inspection reveals that the draw band is broken and at least one spring on the carriage is damaged. All of the keys work smoothly, however they stick when hammered down. This could likely be solved with some alcohol brushed into the segment. A local typewriter shop could probably get this in beautiful working condition with ease, but I am selling it as is. However, please note that antique manual typewriters have a large amount of delicate moving mechanical parts that are prone to damage during the stress of shipping. It's a huge archive of all the manuals the site owner Richard Polt has found so far. It's pretty easy to remove the carriage even without a service manual, way easier than on most other machines, though it can get finicky when being put back on. Just don't lose those ball bearings. If you don't find what you're looking for there, I can type up carriage removal process for you, with photos. I also checked out the big typewriter database three volume manual, but their Corona portable section seems to start with some later models like the Sterling (also useful, but not for this particular machine). Any guidance you could offer would of course be greatly appreciated. I acquired one the other day and found that the carriage advancement lever it wobbling all over so it doesn't engage properly. The platen itself slides side to side about a quarter of an inch and it looks like there's an air gap on the left side, like there used to be a thick washer there or something. On my 1922 and 1934 models the platen seems to sit snugly between both sides of the carriage frame so they're not particularly useful here. All rights reserved Back to top. The typewriter measures 27 cms wide ( carriage) by 24 cms deep and 15 cms high, when folded out for use and when the carriage is folded from back to front the whole unit measures 27 cms x 22 cms x 10 cms high. There are some small signs of wear ro the leatherette covering in places. For precision typing and larger typing projects this would not be the best option. It is in full working order and fitted with a new Group 1 ribbon so its all ready for you to start typing on. You would then just rewind the new ribbon onto the existing metal spools.A ribbon will last you a long time and to give you an idea, in an office environment with someone using a typewriter professionally a ribbon would last them around 3 months. I had to rewind the entire ribbon onto my existing spools. That said, the ribbon is good quality and was fine once rewound.I was afraid it'd be hard to find replacement ribbons but nope. These came right away, popped into the machine with no trouble, and are working great!I would like a slightly skinnier ribbon so that I could see the words as I'm typing. Pretty impressive for 104 years old. I had to hunt around to discover where some of the symbols were, since they were not clear from the keys. As noted above, the comma is indicated by the “.”, and where they show “,” is actually “-“. I straightened out the off kilter key symbols by pushing the paper discs from the underside of the keys. Several rings just came off, and I pushed them back on. The typebar cushion rest was made of cork and had been damaged, so I removed that and slipped in a piece of heavy wool piano felt. The feet are there, but no longer soft, so I might dig out the hard old rubber and slip in some new grommets that should fit nicely. Aside from that, the front panel of the case needs some repairs to the hinge of leather, and that’s it. Lastly, thanks to Richard Polt again for making all those manuals available.
