A corporate identity manual defines how your company’s brand, image and messaging is delivered to the public and particularly to your key audiences. But before we answer the burning question of what’s the most important page in your corporate identity manual, let’s dig a little deeper. Corporate identity is not the same as corporate image. Clive Chajet, writing in Corporate Image, makes these distinctions: Corporate image is the perception of the company by its various audiences, i.e., how it appears to outsiders such as the financial community or potential consumers. Corporate identity is what the corporation chooses to use to shape those perceptions. To make it easy for employees to present the corporate identity consistently, many businesses publish a corporate identity manual. A corporate identity manual is simply a set of instructions for how to present things like logos and how to describe the business accurately. How do we reign in all of this and maintain standards, as well as build upon a brand as the company and its story evolves and grows. The corporate identity manual is the critical tool for this. It positions the company, no matter how big or small. The importance of consistent typography, color use, logo placement and such cannot be taken for granted. These are all laid out in the corporate identity manual. Good identity manuals help designers and communication managers establish a visual voice for the company that may include photography libraries and image standards as well as professional publication templates. These guidelines build a more powerful corporate identity that in turn influences the public and ultimately the company’s corporate image. The Real Power of Your ID Manual When I was the manager of corporate communications at an insurance company, I inherited a new logo and an unyielding binder full of identity standards and recommendations. (This was back in the days when you had to print everything and a PDF was not possible.) The “work in progress” standards were too cumbersome and the page length made it prohibitive to print. So I sat down and sifted through the content and prioritized everything to see how I could get the final manual down to 16 pages. I thought everyone would now follow the carefully worded rules and exacting details that we had labored over in writing and designing the manual. What I found was that most people didn’t actually read the document. They just called me with their questions and asked me what the rules were. So the manual became my reference guide. It kept me on track, consistent and more importantly it became the law of the land within the company. Once I had the manual in place I could call the vice president of pensions and say, with confidence, that the logo could not be published with that drop shadow against a dark colored background because it says so on page 4. And why would he listen to me. Because, on the first page of the corporate identity manual, there was a signed letter from the president of the company introducing and endorsing the branding standards. That was the most important page in the manual. British Transport Films (part of BR) has a page for the type and colour for credit titles on their documentary films. Oddly, I couldn't find any reference to ticket design. The common elements that run right through the book are how the logo should be treated and the use of the Rail Alphabet for the lettering. This alphabet was based on the Swiss designed Helvetica but with reduced ascenders (though not as severe as the McDonald's logo) a different capital J, Q, ampersand and other very slight refinements. The Rail Alphabet was fine for signs and anything that didn't require text because Helvetica wasn't a common type used by British printers so most text settings used the French designed Univers or Monotype 215 and 216 which every printer carried. For a softer look, on menus for example, Baskerville roman and italic was specified. It's interesting to see how the BR look in 1965, when the first manual was introduced, didn't really change for years, a slight deviation in January 1980 was for the InterCity APT which used the Rail Alphabet but with rounded corners to the letters which also touched each other, other than that the sixties BR style ran right through to the nineties. Tony Howard (former head of BR design) says in his Introduction that the style manual eventually became too inflexible and didn't allow various divisions of BR (InterCity, Freightliner, Network SouthEast et cetera) to develop their own branding to suit their customer base. I found this interesting because a style manual, if it is to work properly, should allow the corporate identity to evolve into new areas and still maintain it's unique visual look. The book has 472 pages but it's worth saying that as it reproduces the original manual's ring-binder pages there is very little printed on the left-hand ones. There are several fold-outs and I thought the reproduction was excellent. BR Publicity Red, Blue and yellow are reproduced as the original pages. The back of the book has twenty-four pages with two essays and a long interview with Gerry Barney who designed the now famous and still in use BR logo. A wonderful book that will provide a nostalgic trip backwards for BR fans and a working tool for any designers who want to get to grips with corporate identity.In short, it is a superb facsimile compendium of four BR Corporate Identity Manuals that were originally issued between 1965 and 1970. Comprising 372 pages, it is a cloth bound hardback publication that features all 220 pages from the original manuals. The book measures 10 inches (25 cm) wide by 12.Everything in terms of corporate identity is here, and I’ll wager, quite a few items you’ll never think of. Here you will find everything from the symbol, logotype, lettering and colour palette, to guidance on signposting, vehicles, stationery and uniforms. There are insightful contributions from the designer of the logo, Gerry Barney, plus a foreword by Michael C Place, founder of the design agency Build; an introduction by Tony Howard, former head of design at British Rail; an essay by James Greenfield, founder of the design studio Koto and an essay from Paul Rennie from Central Saint Martins, a college of the University of the Arts, London. An interesting study for students of art design and perhaps also for those railway enthusiasts with fond memories of the comfort brought by such consistent branding.
