With each press of the button, the reference pitch will increase by 1Hz increments from 440Hz to 445Hz. Once the pitch has reached 445Hz, the next press will decrease the pitch to 438Hz. When the button operation is stopped, the reference pitch is set and the tuner will stand by for tuning. Used with the Palathetic under- saddle pickup, it offers four-band EQ (low, low mid, high mid, high) and two notch filter controls to reduce feedback. Takamine's patented Palethetic pickup system, using an array of multiple piezo transducers built into the bridge-plate during manufacture, is already a half-decent-sounding solution, but the sound is still rather brittle, with unnatural dynamics. I'd hesitate to say that it is significantly more microphone-like, but what it certainly is is much nicer, both to listen to and to play. Low-level detail becomes more audible and sustain is increased, as if using a good compressor. There's a useful degree of variation available too; I found I used about 60 percent Cool Tube in a recording context, for maximum warmth, but only around 30 percent on stage, where I wanted to both retain more edge and minimise feedback. It is powered by four AA batteries, giving around 24 hours of playing time — enough to get you through the gig, but clearly not ideal on a long-term basis. An alternate power source switch on the preamp module suggests that external powering will be possible, but no details are currently available. The tube itself is a standard type that should last as long as the guitar in a circuit of this kind. Takamine's Cool Tube approach is undeniably one of the more successful ones. The most common cause of preamp failure is leaking batteries. Sadly, we saw dozens of our customers ruin preamps due to leaving batteries in for a year or more (they only used the tuner). My recommendation is to spring for rechargeable Panasonic Eneloop AA batteries: a single charge lets you gig for two or three months, they're less prone to leaking than alkaline batteries and you can recharge them a couple thousand times. The preamps are very similar but the CTP-2 has a textured face (rather than polished), a modified battery case (contacts on bottom rather than side) and a warm-up indicator light. It is distinguished from the CTP-2 by additional controls, lack of a visible battery cage and two topside pinch tabs. Went way beyond normal. Bill knows his stuff! A real pro! It cam with a CTP-2 and I add a Triax soundhole pickup. The combination had been magical - up until it quit working. That unit went out slowly and intermittently. I bought a new 12AU7. It did not help it. I finally buckled down and bought the replacement from this music site. The unit arrived looking like it was not new. It had no paperwork, no warranty and no instructions. I was annoyed. I put in new batteries and put it in my guitar. I also re-hooked up the Triax into the AUX input. I fussed around with it and thought it was not working properly for awhile and made arrangements to return it. The sound is great (again). This box is a bit different from the CTP-2 and probably better designed and has a few more buttons. I use it with the tube set to about 40-50, and dial in the Triax so it is just noticeable. The result is a smooth and vibrant acoustic-electric sound. I play it through a pedalboard with reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus - and sometimes wah and overdrive. It does not do well played into my Deluxe Reverb. It sounds utterly great in my Fishman SA220. That makes sense because this is ultimately an acoustic set up. I am glad I bought it. Note: This is a hard piece of gear to find anywhere. There is one other seller on Ebay and I initially did not buy from him because he did not offer returns and this seller did. The other seller seemed to know way more about the Takimine products, however. Choose wisely. I also added the Tri-Ax 2 magnetic pickup to my guitar and am extremely pleased with the sound I am getting. The Low end boost gave me more presence for all of the looping I do and the Extra magnetic pickup blended in gives me more Low mid on the higher strings. It's not cheap but it is indeed worth it. Some things were missing: firstly, when you plugged the guitar in the tube fired up, so battery was wasted (I need a 'standby' mode). Secondly, I need a notch filter to handle body resonance feedback in live situations. Otherwise, the CTP-2 was perfect. The CTP-3 gives a standby button and notch filtering, and a 'boost' for in-out of 'lead'. Lovely. So I bought the CTP-3 from Thomann, it arrived, and the pretty simple swap-out ends up with an upgrade for my lovely, and now mature and even sweeter-sounding, Takamine P7NC. True satisfaction. A great guitar, and it really is when plugged, made better - particularly live. All in all, sound and features are among the best you can get these days. One problem I am still working on is that often the unit will not switch on. The 4 AA batteries fit too snugly which means the little springs are not strong enough to push the batteries against the contacts in the lid which has to be removed to replace the batteries. I noticed a small self-adhesive felt pad in the battery compartment, presumably to stop batteries rattling and making a sound that gets picked up. Having removed this all but two brands of batteries now fit loose enough that the preamp has power. I am still cautious, not wanting to have this problem 2 minutes before going on stage.
