JS 5.0 out of 5 stars But it's not going to teach you much about metal, country and classical fingerpicking, slide techniques (the kind where you wear a slide on your finger), etc. Be aware that this book contains almost everything in the book by the same author on Progressive Improvising Lead Guitar, so if you're looking at buying both of them, just get this one and you'll get the same material minus a few tracks. I'm nitpicking a bit because this difference really isn't taught like it needs to be, and I didn't know it for years, so I'd like beginner students to find out sooner than that. If you're curious about the difference, go check out blues vs.This book does both. This is a great book for both beginners and those like myself getting back into playing. Each lesson is set out in an easy to understand explanation, and contains enough variations of each exercise. You are not only learning different ways to apply what you are learning, but you are not getting bored by playing the same thing over and over again. In additon, there are 2 CD's with this book. I haven't used them yet as the book explains everything so well, but it's nice to have them should I need to hear what an exercise sounds like. It costs a bit more than your regular music book, but well worth the price. I work out of this book everyday and enjoy every minute of it.The exercises are fun and the progression quite rapid. There is no subsititute for practice and therefore you will need to spend time preferably everyday to build up to the exercises. My only criticism is the CD. Even the very first exercise is played so ridiculously fast that I'm sure many people give up before they've really started. If you listen to the truly great guitarists they don't always play at breakneck speed to sound amazing.http://www.xpandsolutions.co.uk/php/uploads/dmas-medicaid-manual.xml I would still recommend this book as it is excellent in all other awys.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. This book is a great place to start!! The instruction is well paced, thorough, and the accompanying CDs are well produced. This book gives a solid foundation on technique, notation reading, tabulature, scales, transposition, chord construction and progressions, theory, fingerpicking, etc. The one thing missing for me was modal theory and improvising but I expect to see that in the book on playing Lead guitar. I really look forward to continuing on with the author's books on LEAD and BLUES. If you are considering starting with Mel Bay or Hal Leonard as first time books, put this manual right up there with them. After I get grounded again with this book and a few of the other Complete Learn to Play Books, I intend to work my way through the Berklee Books (1-3) again.they are well recommended as well! It is particularly useful for helping a student read standard notation, tablature, using a pick, basic finger picking and more. And here's how.
