I have an old board from Compaq sitting here and its says Copyrighted by Compaq, and other stuff like their replacment part number on the board. The system boots OK with the single 64MB stick of PC100 memory, but fails to get past POST with 2 x 256MB PC133 memory. Some computers show this message whenever memory is added or removed. There is no cause for concern, and the message will disappear the next time you boot up your system. The problem is that this F10 CMOS Setup Screen doesn't have any memory-specific settings to change. That said, however, here's the latest. The damned thing eventually recognised the new memory apparently by itself and booted into Windows!!! It seems to be running Windows fine and without any glitches. It also passed all memory tests. The increase in speed of Internet page loading and application access is as expected - very slick. Now, what I don't understand is WHY this finally just decided to work. I swapped the memory back to the old 1 x 64MB PC100 SDRAM, and booted perfectly. I had 1 x 128MB PC133 SDRAM (double-sided like the new 256MB ones) and decided to give that a go on its own. Again, the change was detected by the BIOS as it counted through the new capacity, issued the same 164 message, then booted perfectly into Windows which showed a reasonable speed improvement. I rebooted to the memory test, and it sailed through. I had packed the 2 x 256MB PC133 SDRAM modules back into their box intending to take them home and test in my own machine, but decided to have a go with them one last time. Bang, instantly recognised and registered as 512MB and, despite that same old 164 message, booted right into Windows at blistering speed. I would have thought that either cause would have issued a different error though. 2. The intermediate step of a single PC133 double-sided module has somehow been recognised and automatically configured to form an intermediate step that allowed the BIOS to then take the next step. Remember that this CMOS setup is so limited that it affords virtually no user settings, but is certainly able to auto-detect new IDE devices. 3. Upgrading the CD-RW at the same time as the memory has given it too much to think about and, had I sat and waited for a lot longer, perhaps it would eventually have accepted the memory OK. I once sat for about 20 minutes while a much older Compaq Deskpro 2000 auto-detected and configured a new hard drive!! The closest I have gotten was a tech at a computer shop said that the highest it could be raised is 1Ghz and that the Money spent to do it was not worth the hasles. Compaq made sure that you would have to replace all perirherals installed on it along with the main board. So I am going to give in and spend alot of money and get an AlienWare 4Ghz overclocked to 5.6Ghz with double video cards and all the bells and whistles.I already have a full atx tower with 300w power supply, just buy new motherboard and processor and ram. I removed the radeon 9250 and the integrated graphics worked fine again. HELP!!! I great inexpensive upgrade for 06C0H mother board is a GU 370 adapter. This will allow you to install a Tualatin Celeron processor up to 1.4 mhz. This is not overclocking. I had my doubts about the Celeron processor but they were unfounded. The processor opens and closes programs quickly, boots up fast and runs multiple applications at once with no problems or lag. I find 2gb of ram to be the sweet spot when it comes to ram. Unless I'm doing any sort of rendering I'll never max out my ram even with all of my programs open. It is nice to know I can upgrade to 4gb of ram if need be, however. All in all, I could not be happier with the performance of this copuetmr. Performance aside there are some things about the laptop that I dislike. The most annoying thing to me is the lack of dedicated volume control buttons. The copuetmr also comes loaded with pre-installed programs so be prepared to spend some time uninstalling them. Personally, I also wish the resolution of the display was higher. 1366 768 is ok but I think 1440 900 is perfect for a copuetmr this size. The plastics of the copuetmr are nothing to write home about either. Generally, the finish of the copuetmr feels as you would expect for the price cheap. There are obviously going to be some drawbacks for a copuetmr this inexpensive. Even with everything I dislike about this copuetmr I still think its a great value and would recommend it to anyone shopping for a laptop on a budget. Being the least expensive full-sized notebook I could find, I would go as far ad to say the power and features of this copuetmr are remarkable. The only purpose of the pencil trick is to unlock the multiplier. I have an ASUS A7S333 and I also have to set my motherboard to jumperfree mode to change FSB. You do this on the motherboard. There is a jumper on the board you much change(prolly called the JEN jumper). I also had to in conjunction with changing the jumper turn my DIP switches all to OFF. This then allowed me to go into the bios and change FSB. If you aren't sure about where the jumper is to set to jumper free mode or if you have DIP switches you need turned off it should be in your manual. For Vista- you want to put a shortcut icon in C:\Users\Public\Desktop. Desktop is a hidden folder, so you'll have to type it in (or change folders properties). Do this from the Admn account. The clicking noise from the PSU is kinda perplexing though. On the motherboard, where the connectors go, there should be some kind of print saying where to plug them in. (IE, POWER SW, would go into PWR, and HDD LED would go into HDLED and POWER LED would go into PWRLED). It may look different than this, but generally the same kind of layout, as you can see, it shows the positions, as well as positive and negative. I had to use a FC-PGA2 to FC-PGA convertor for Tualatin core cpu with a heatsink and fan. These are the only two changes to the system. I will say its a huge improvement over the 600mhz cpu. But after about 10-15 min while on the net the computer will freeze, the only way to free it is with a hard boot. I am thinking its my power supply is not sufficent enough as its a 145w factory. After one shutdown I felt the heatsink and it was not hot, so I do not think its getting to hot unless maybe the HDD is. I have ordered a 400w power supply which should be here anytime. I think the psu is part of the problem and maybe the HDD is overheating, but I was running both hard drives toegther with the 600mhz processor with no problems. The heatsink is positioned IAW the manufacture instructions, I still have 386mb of free ram so memory's not an issue. I will check again for drivers, there is none for the motherboard as its from Compaq MOD 06C0H but I will check again for the CPU. Thank you for all the input.
