It would have been a little bit cheaper if I had found a used auto transmission myself, but you have to think about this: what if you pay to get a used transmission put in your car and 6 months later it goes out again. Then you’re screwed.Do you have the money to even fix the car at all. But I HIGHLY recommend you get a couple estimates on how much it will cost to get the auto transmission rebuilt, or to buy a used one and install it and compare that to the prices of the 5spd swap in the next section.If you are patient enough to look around (see links section) for parts and find everything you need at low prices, then your swap isn’t going to cost as much. Just as an idea. By now you should know what a LSD does, so make your own decision whether to buy one and use it or not. If you want an OEM feel with a low budget, then get a used OEM clutch and flywheel and you will be happy. But the general school of thought on this topic is that since your transmission is going to be off already, why not upgrade the clutch and flywheel and save yourself the trouble of having to do it later right?I suggest you get an idea of what you want by either talking to friends who have aftermarket clutches. Maybe driving them to get a feel or do some research online. The guy I have doing mine has never done a 5spd swap on a prelude before, but he has done them on civics and accords and he knows his Hondas.We tapped into the original wires under the dash that lead to the starter and ran them to the clutch cutoff switch. My mechanic did some fancy soldering and got it to work nicely. I know there are lots of people who want to go faster and want more power. So I thought I would put together some information on what’s necessary to do an H22 or F20b swap. People have been swapping H-series engines into the BA4 chassis for decades. So like I said, I’m not reinventing the wheel here. We are going to ignore the K-swap option in this article, as well as the other B-Series swap options that are out there. There are some who have pulled off the K-swap. It’s not impossible, but with so little support for this swap it might as well be. You literally have to fabricate everything to make it work and even if you pulled that off you will either have an oil pan that is one inch off the ground or a hole in your hood. These are trade offs that don’t make sense for 99 of us. The H22A1 was offered in the US, Europe and Australia in different versions. Basically, the H22 for the 4th Gen Prelude Si VTEC made right around 190 hp (187 hp to be exact) and then Honda offered the H22A4 in the 5th Gen Preludes that made right around 200 hp. It came in an automatic version, which was good for 180 hp and a standard transmission version which put out 197 hp. The difference between the auto and manual versions were that the manual version used bigger cams, intake and throttle body of the H22. This FRM material made the cylinder walls extremely strong, but are hard on steel and as a result, the piston rings have a tendency to wear prematurely. This is why you commonly hear stories about H22’s burning oil. F20b cylinders are steel, and are not known to burn oil. You can either leave it alone at the 180 hp output, or upgrade the cams, intake and throttle body and get the output of the manual. I love the flexibility the F20b offers. With that being said, the F20b will require a post mount from a 4th or 5th Gen Prelude. Lots of companies offer mount solutions. Here is a set of links. The companies listed above offer traction bars.Lots of options here. You can go with the regular H22 trans, which does not come with a limited slip differential (LSD). No matter which tranny you get, you’ll will want to change out that clutch and throw out bearing. Maybe even throw in a lightened flywheel.We need the shifter box and cables from a 4th or 5th Gen Prelude. You can also use Accord cables from the 90-96 5-speed models. These are pretty easy to find on eBay or your local junkyard.Whichever engine you pick, you are going to need the wiring harness that it comes with. So make sure your engine comes with the harness or you’ll be on eBay making another purchase. You will need an ECU that will work with VTEC. You can run the stock H22 ECU (P13). It’s plug and play with 90-91 Ludes. If you have a 88-89 Prelude you will need to convert to OBD1 with a conversion harness. You could also run a chipped P28 ECU (very popular) or an ECU from Hondata.We need axles! The easy and cheap way is to run Accord axles from the 90-93 5-speed model. I have had lots of luck with axles from O’Reilly’s. I would start there. You will also need the 90-98 Accord half shaft if using the Accord axles. Keep in mind, the Accord axles will only work with 90-91 Preludes. 88-89 will need a hub conversion to work. Aftermarket axle companies like and can make you whatever you want for this swap, but you’ll be paying for it. Clutch slave cylinder, clutch line, timing belt, water pump, timing belt tensioner, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Although it’s a lot easier to replace these parts with the engine out of the car, I would run what came with the engine to make sure that your engine is good. Once you have established that you have a solid motor, I would install these recommended maintenance parts. You can find stuff for cheaper, especially if you are willing to get a little risky with where your parts come from. Local junkyards and Facebook market place come to mind. Just be careful. Vehicle overview The aptly named Prelude has always been a symbol for great things to come. Honda has long used the Prelude to showcase its latest technological developments. Remember Honda's four-wheel steering system, designed to give drivers better control in tight corners. It first debuted on the '88 Prelude. In 1993, the Prelude was also one of the first Hondas to receive a VTEC engine, originally introduced in the 1991 Acura NSX. In 1997, Honda continued this tradition by equipping the Prelude SH with the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS). ATTS is designed to give the front-wheel-drive Prelude rear-wheel-drive cornering ability while retaining the wet-weather benefits of a traditional front-wheel-drive car. The system works by monitoring the car's speed, steering angle and yaw rate to determine whether the car is following the driver's intended course. In a tight, fast corner, the system works by increasing torque to the outboard front wheel, which in turn increases the vehicle's yaw rate, giving the driver better steering response. Basically, it neutralizes understeer for those times when the corners get a little too tight. What will they think of next. Both trims of the Prelude are powered by the 2.2-liter four-cylinder VTEC engine that, when coupled with the manual transmission, cranks out 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 156 foot-pounds of torque at 5,250 rpm. Equipping the Prelude with the automatic transmission reduces horsepower by 5, but the torque remains the same. Base models are available with either a manual or automatic transmission, but if you want the high-tech Type SH, you better like rowing your own gears, since it is available only with the five-speed manual gearbox. The four-speed automatic features a sequential SportShift that gives the driver the option of selecting his own gears, similar to Porsche's Tiptronic. Both the base and Type SH models get standard four-wheel ABS, which pulls the car down from speed quickly. The Prelude comes standard with a six-speaker audio system, power moonroof, adjustable steering column and a height-adjustable driver seat. Also standard is a state-of-the-art anti-theft system that uses a digitally coded radio signal to ensure that the key you use is the one that came with the vehicle. After receiving harsh criticism for the fourth-generation's funky interior, Honda took a conservative approach to the dashboard layout of the current Prelude. It is disappointing to note that Honda went so conservative that there's nothing to distinguish the car from a late-80s Accord. Despite the interior shortcomings, the Prelude is an outstanding sport coupe that offers the latest technology at a reasonably affordable price. While out Kicking tires at some dealerships I found a 01 Black Prelude 5spd. I took it for a test drive and was sold before I even hit 3 blocks, took it back and bought it with 113k. Purchaced the car in 2007 ended up totaling it in 2011 but it was super reliable only oil changes, tires and tune ups.I miss this car and it was a blast to drive on my 60mile commute especially passing people.Its not very roomy but whatever, its a great ride and stops on a dime. I'm over 200,000 km and it still drives like new. I have always babied it and never had a problem. My biggest expense was timing belt and water pump for a 1000 bucks, my crank pully was damaged. I did wait way to long to change my timing belt, I changed it at 195,000 so lucky it didn't brake, it had cracks all over it. A little tip, if you own a prelude and have a problem, only take it to honda, its to hard of a car to work on and anyone else will screw it up. 4.5 out of 5 stars, Fun car. The car was great I had it lowered on springs. The car was really fun and sounded great with a small 12in sub. It was definitely one of the best cars I've owned. The only complaint was the transmission. They don't last very long. Pretty much everything about this car, from the low roofline, to the seating position, to the engine character screams Italian. All Hondas need to be revved up to make power, but this one is even more extreme.
