These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source. In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components. BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent. If this is not possible, call BBE Sound, Inc.Include a copy of the bill of sale with the unit when it is shipped to BBE Sound, Inc. If you need a Maximizer to put the final touch to your complete mix, then the 882i is exactly what you need, and for only around 250 and even less than that used, you really cant go wrong. UTILIZATION Getting started is very simple with the Sonic Maximizer 882i, and the manual is very easy to understand. The unit is pretty easy to understand on your own though without the need for the book. There are only a total of 4 knobs on the front of the unit and each are labeled. There are many different software’s in DAW’s that can almost do the same thing as the 882i but I prefer to stick with hardware. I have been using this device for a while now and if its not broke then don’t fix it. I am very comfortable using it. OVERALL OPINION The BBE 882i is very well built and well made. The sound quality that it produces is second to none and for the price it could be the best Maximizer available. I have used several different similar products but this is the first one from BBE that I have used. I am now looking into a newer version of a Maximizer with more inputs. I recommend using this to put the final touches on your mixes. You will hear the difference.I’m not sure what type of connections the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i has as the one I used is pre-racked, but it is a rack mountable piece of gear that will only take up a single rack space unit. UTILIZATION The set up of the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i is very easy to follow, as each channel only has two knobs and a section for metering. The parameters that each channel has are for process, which is the exciter portion of the unit, as well as a knob for lo contour, which boosts the low end in the signal and is there to balance out the level after using the process knob. There is also a bypass switch in the middle of the two channels. I don’t have a manual for the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i, but it is very simple to use and a manual isn’t needed. SOUND QUALITY The sound quality of the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i is very good, especially when compared to some of the other models of the Sonic Maximizer. While I don’t use this all the time, when I do use it I find that I am happy with my results. I’ve used it on a number of different applications including vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and drum overheads. In some cases I’ve even used it on single drums like snare drum, tom tom drums, and kick drum. OVERALL OPINION I’ve been using the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i for about two years and it is probably the best model of the Sonic Maximizer out there that I have used. While I prefer the plug-in version of this model because it is more convenient to use since I don’t use it that much, the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i sounds great and is certainly a unique type of outboard gear. The price of the BBE Sonic Maximizer 882i isn’t too expensive, but I really would recommend the plug-in version over this one unless you feel you are going to be using it all the time because it is a little cheaper and much more convenient.https://jagatex.pl/images/8800-gtx-user-manual.pdfThe channels are independent (one can use mono) but you can use the maximizer of a stereo signal, exit right on channel A for example and left channel output B (that clear?) UTILIZATION No more simple, you branches, t'allumes BBE, You hear the sound that passes BBE process of leaping the button, ET ben the process starts up, the sound changes And then you turn the knobs according to the channel on which you are and rules to the ear. In short, no simple nan. SOUND QUALITY So is the effect of the process is immediate, highly effective The lo contour knob: As the name suggests, it affects mainly the low frequencies knob the process: at high frequencies I think (I know something personal but not too much as the result is there!) In the end (it's just a test 2 days that I have): I put myself in the ass of my mpc 60, which has its particular sound with a sound somewhat altered anyway. I used the internal mixer to mix the MPC (just). In short: use the Master signal What I get out of Maximizer: the signal returned as they like is cleaned, reinforced. Finally, by and large, the signal alterations suffered by the various sampling, treatments. Be careful though: do not go there not as a bourrain (yeah what.). It's all about finesse, to the ear. OVERALL OPINION In the end, I think it's a great product that can be used both in mastering, and for mixing. For me, it can be put anywhere, but to use with intelligence anyway (yeah not have to be stupid either, this product is not an end in itself). Anyway, I think once you've tasted, it becomes indispensable. Value for money: great in OCCAZ, but the new price is not so high either. So I would say excellent.I RULES low over a half and I against the treble down to 10, 11am. Your exact satisfy me. From huge operations such as Japan's NHK to local music stations such as Los Angeles' 94.7 The Wave, BBE has become a necessity for modern quality broadcast quality. Transients and Harmonics: The Color Codes of Sound To understand how BBE sound processing technology works, consider the characteristics of a loudspeaker and what we expect from one. Among a loudspeaker's most important requirements is the ability to reproduce transients - the brief high-energy bursts at the beginning of sounds. The transients then evolve into harmonics. It is the particular amplitudes and phase relationships of these transients and harmonics which add the unique color and character to each sound. Varying either the amplitude or the phase of the transients and harmonics within signal causes distortion of the sound's characteristics. By drastically altering the transient response of a sound, it's possible to make a cymbal crash seem like a car crash. Similarly, altering amplitude or phase relationships of the harmonics in a clarinet's tone can make it sound more like a flute, or a French horn like an oboe. Amplitude and Phase A loudspeaker's transient response is typically expressed in terms of amplitude response (how quickly it reacts to an incoming signal), with little or no regard to phase response (whether high and low frequencies are reproduced at the proper time). The ability to accurately represent a sound's phase and amplitude define the quality of a loudspeaker's transient and steady - state, or sustained, response. If a loudspeaker's amplitude response curve were linear, then the relationship between the high and low frequencies would be correct. And if a loudspeaker's phase response curve were linear, then the low and high frequencies would reach the listener's ears in their correct time order. This would result in faithful reproduction of the sound. However, this isn't normally the case. Why is Live Sound so Pleasing. When we listen to live music, all of the highs and lows reach our ears in the same relationship to each other as when they were created by the instruments. If this same live music were to be recorded and played back through a loudspeaker system, the loudspeaker would introduce frequency-dependent phase shifting. The inductance of the speaker's voice coil creates a stronger impedance as the signal's frequency increases, resulting in a time delay. Consequently, frequency components with large negative phase shifts (high frequencies) arrive at the listener's ear later than signals undergoing small phase shifts (low frequencies). The resultant signal is distorted in the time domain to the listener's ear. Audio material containing sharp transients (e.g., percussive and plucked sounds such as drums, guitar, piano and harpsichord, etc.) suffers the most from this phenomenon, making it seem unfocused, or mushy. In order to address these problems inherent in basic loudspeaker design, BBE Sound, Inc.The first adjusts the phase relationships of the low, mid and high frequencies. Since a loudspeaker's natural tendency is to add progressively longer delay times to higher frequencies, the BBE sound processing system adds progressively longer delay times to lower frequencies. The second major element in the BBE system is the augmentation of the higher and lower frequencies. Loudspeakers tend to be less efficient in their extreme treble and bass ranges. Most sound-reproducing systems include a circuit for boosting high and low frequencies, showing an accepted awareness of the loudspeaker's efficiency problem. The BBE system, however, provides a dynamic, program-driven augmentation which combines with the phase compensation feature to restore the brilliance and clarity of the original live sound. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Interstitialist 5.0 out of 5 stars Dumb product engineering. This BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer really does add brightness and punch to music. Especially to ballads. It really brightens up the vocals. So let's be clear that the BBE Sonic Maximizer is NOT a replacement for the Aphex Exciter or vice versa. We use both of them together -- with the Sonic Maximizer following the Exciter in the audio chain. A great combination. Dumb product engineering. And yet the front panel design stands out from other rack components as almost a child's toy with its fire engine red painted panel and its rounded child safety knobs. The result for us is a love-hate relationship. Dear BBE, PLEASE clean up the front panel. TWO AFTERTHOUGHTS that may be of interest. Consumer audio devices and professional audio devices are best connected by a line level converter. We have heard that some people connect them directly, but we have no experience with that and don't know how well it works. (Special cables would be required.) Second, the technology behind the BBE Sonic Maximizer is more sophisticated than you might expect and appears to represent a real breakthrough in audio engineering. One of the hits from of this search will be the PDF manual for the BBE 282i Series of sonic maximizers. This is a pro piece of gear, most often used in commercial PA systems and so on. Back in my playin' days, they were a must have. And now I feel the same way about using one for our home stereo system. I looked at the DJ model, which would have been nice with only 2 knobs, and it was black, but when I looked at the specs, this 882i was much quieter. This 882i is really remarkably transparent. It's invisible. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but I would describe it's effect as adding a little 'depth' to my system. That's probably not helpful, but that's how I'd describe it. I didn't give it 5 stars because..... first of all, it's RED!!! Argh! That may be fine for being installed in the rack at the back of the house for a big PA rack of components, but for my home stereo, it's just way to RED. The second reason is probably related to that first one, and that is the lights on it are really bright. Again, maybe a good think when used for it's intended use as a piece of PA gear, but for my little set up, those lights are distracting. At the moment, I have some small pieces of blue masking tape covering the lights. I know, I'm using it for something for which it wasn't intended. But considering what it does to the sound of our system, I can live with the REDNESS and the bright lights. If you are thinking about adding one of these for your home stereo, make sure your amp or pre-amp has the correct connections on it. The new 'Tape Monitor' connections don't work like the old ones did. So 4 stars, even though it should be 5 - 5 stars for audio quality, but 3 stars for cosmetics.I purchased a used BBE 362 from a guy on craigslist a few years ago and matched it to my SWR 750X bass head and it totally changed the character and delivery of the sound through my bass cab. I loved it. So I purchased the BBE 882i and added it to my Crown XLS 1500 power amp and SansAmp Tech 21 RBI preamp and again I experienced much more bottom end and sparkle in my sound. I love my sonic maximizers and will always add one to my bass head rigs.Adds that extra sparkle to the sound from the amp.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. The BBE Sonic MaxiMizer is a 2-channel signal processor that will benefit any recording or sound reproduction system. Whether you purchased the 882i for your home studio,, DJ system, or instrument rack, you will find the Sonic MaxiMizer 's rugged construc- tion and careful electronic design a welcome addition to your Sonic arsenal. 7 The BBE Process What it Is. Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by a speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source. In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus delegated to a position of sec- ondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener trans- lates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. 8 These relationships define a sound 's sound. When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simulta- neously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components. This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequen- cies is technically called envelope distortion. The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as muddy and smeared. 9 In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet. BBE sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency struc- tures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent. A single function button switches the BBE process on or off in both channels, which is useful for comparing the processed sound to the unprocessed sound.
