Therein lies the problem, not so much with the book, but with cars like the Prius i.e. hybrids and highly computerized control systems. As a result, there isn't much that a DIY can do without endangering the vehicle; for example, the Prius air conditioning is electric, not belt driven, that is fabulous since it a) runs when the engine is at a stop and b) it variably and continuously dehumidifies the interior - a quieter, more efficient system. It's clear and there are good chapters on diagnostic codes. However, that is not the best layout for an owner DIY. I also found that the index is not thorough. Both those issues require re-editing, preferably with input from existing owners.I'm very impressed with the quality of images and information, and I'm sure that I will spend lots of time learning about my very complex and very snazzy car. Still working on passing smog here in CA, but that's a solvable problem. I should say that I used to buy the factory shop manuals for older Hondas that I owned and loved. I loved the manuals also, as they were unfailingly complete and clear in what was being described. This Prius manual reminds me of the quality level of the Honda manuals, and that's a pretty high documentary bar.Points made, such as, there being lots of blank sections of pages, not enough things being covered, not by any means a Haynes manual, etc. I am now very glad that I took the plunge and got the book and gauge it to be well worth the purchase. As to blank sections of pages, I do not find them excessive, at all, and with the book comprising over 640 pages, would estimate that even if things were crammed together more on the pages, it would still be unlikely to compress it into less than 600 pages, which is still a large book and much larger than any Haynes manual, of which I've gathered quite a few for different cars over the years. The spaces in fact are, to my mind, welcome in helping to make the text, diagrams, photos, charts, etc less dense and overwhelming in intensity, and thereby somewhat easier to work through.http://dana1157.com/images/04-pw80-manual.pdf Plus the fact that the quality of paper and that of the illustrations is much superior to that of any Haynes manual, the latter being notorious for their poor quality photos and at times, confusing instructions. Many of the illustrations in the Bentley manual are in fact taken, with permission, from Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. and are of reasonably good quality. The photos too, are much clearer and of far better quality than those found in a Haynes, which have often got dark, poorly lit photos coupled with poor quality paper. The Bentley, by contrast, has excellent quality paper and much clearer, brighter photos, many of which, in the earlier sections, to do with the high voltage and safety, are in colour, something rarely if ever seen in a Haynes. As to the manual not covering every aspect of maintenance of the Prius, I cannot pretend to have already worked through every section of the book, I am steadily reading through it and got it largely to explore the high voltage operation and safety around it, all of which are covered very clearly and comprehensively. It probably would do no harm, if deemed an advantage, to possess the Haynes Prius manual to augment the information given (or not) in the Bentley, but on the other hand, given a choice between the two, I would definitely opt for the Bentley manual, to me, there’s no comparison in quality, extent of the information and ease of use. For that and the other reasons outlined, I feel that, if trying to decide on just getting one Prius manual, I don’t think, in all honesty, that a person who has much experience of working on cars, and experience of using Haynes manuals in the past, will be sorry to have bought this Bentley manual, especially to do with the areas in which a Prius is not like other cars that one is likely to have worked-on. On the other hand, if the potential buyer has little or no experience of working on cars, they would probably be advised to get this manual as well as the appropriate Haynes and possibly other manuals that they may find recommended. It probably is not the ideal first car to start one’s d.i.y. mechanical journey on, but if it happens to be, then definitely proceed with caution and study over and over the safety information before commencing work on the car. Incidentally, in relation to a criticism made by at least one reviewer, about excessive wiring diagrams, if a person needs to look into the wiring, the diagrams given are not excessive and are laid-out clearly, half of them being for the 2004 model, the other half for the 2007 model. There is even a section given on how to read wiring diagrams and wiring trouble-shooting, both of considerable use if unfortunate enough to have any wiring issues.
