Packed with powerful, full-color diagrams and an easy-to-understand writing style, DEWALT Carpentry and Framing Complete Handbook does just that by spelling out, through pictures, the step-by-step procedures associated with key carpentry concepts. The accompanying text is clear, straightforward, and accessible, clarifying and elaborating on the visuals. Coverage begins with a discussion of house types and foundations, gradually progressing to more complex areas, such as wall and floor framing. The book concludes with a chapter on special topics, which includes an exploration of the construction of stairs, railings, porches, and decks. Logically organized for easy reference, this is a thorough yet concise introduction to the world of carpentry and framing for professionals. Key Handbook Features Clarifies unfamiliar terminology with a glossary in each chapter that identifies and explains new terms for that topic. Explains potentially confusing math concepts through clear example calculations. Offers valuable information that extends beyond the basics with additional examples, span tables, and charts in the appendix; and notes, cautions, and tips in the sidebars. KAM H. 5.0 out of 5 stars I found the chapters in the book. I do some side projects from time to time in my own home. I would say that I have moderate skills in construction. This past year I decided to build a fishing cabin on my mountain hideaway.a kind of man-cave. However I did not have a big budget and I had no access to helpers. Therefore I needed a quick reference guide on basic carpentry skills needed to build a basic structure. After doing some research on Amazon, I decided on this book as it was priced well and had received good reviews. I found the chapters in the book to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up, which was a 12 x 16 gable-roof fishing cabin. I especially found this book to be of great use when it came to building the roof. The roof I settled on was a 12:8 pitched gable roof and I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this book.I'd built some sheds and things before, but wanted to work on doing things more professionally. This book definitely paid for itself a couple times in avoiding rookie mistakes and helping get the job done smarter rather than harder. DeWalt is a solid company, and I'm a proud owner of their tools, but this book has been the go-to thing this summer just looking up quick questions, or researching this or that recommended method for something on a job, including help squaring walls, and other things that would have been big headaches come rafter time if we hadn't followed some of the book's recommendations. I would strongly recommend this to any DIYer that's looking at framing work. Even if you're experienced, having the extra reference is great. He is planning to help me build the front back into a building I moved onto my place this winter. He has been able to plan the project using this book. The seller got this to us in time for Christmas along with another book our son wanted for fun reading. The price was reasonable. The package arrived on time and in good condition.Even at that a novice can use this book and learn a tremendous amount. This book covers all avenues from big projects to the smallest. This is the bottom standard as there are significant changes in building technology that are not mentioned. Yes, buy it but let this be the beginning resource. Dig deeper.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Don't read me wrong: the book is well organized, it covers all basic topics of carpentry and framing, explanations are clear, and I have to underline that I am extremely impressed by the quality of the diagrams. In short, this is money well spent. The very last section presents typical calculations used in carpentry. I am happy I ordered this book.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Shows you all the basics for building just about anything if you are willing to learn and try it yourself. Of course there are many alternative to the singular methods generally shown in this book, but it is a great place to start. Try using this together with the CMHC wood-frame handbook and you will have an excellent wealth of knowledge for building homes in Canada.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again I was a form work carpenter for about 6 years and never really loved it and have finally decided to pursue framing and finishing carpentry. I did my level 1 carpentry apprentice training already and we learned quite a bit about framing, but that was several years ago. This book has been an excellent refresher. The drawings are high quality and very clearly detailed, and everything is explained well, too. I'm really glad I bought this book and already feel more confident about looking for a framing job. You could fly through this book in a few days and learn a ton, or it's just a great reference when you need a reminder about some aspect of your framing job. Really good stuff.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again A staple to anyone who is a framer, seasoned or new. This book is packed full of practical knowledge. Whether you know how to or not this book can shed light on many projects you are working on, have planned, or even finished but just had a though part you had a question about. Get back to the basics with this guide.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Mouldings, trim, closets, doors, cabinets - great, practical tips to make all the jobs go smoother. This book paid for itself in time saved and aggravation eliminated. Thanks! Most importantly, everything presented is useful to the average woodworker or wannabe woodworker with average talent but above average desire. The sad truth is that this fine book is but an introduction to a dying art. In attempting to install (my first) window trim I read and re-read all of the passages dealing with measuring the casings, determining the width of the stool (sill?) and, best of all, how to make the necessary cuts for the returns at the ends of the aprons. It goes into enough detail about everything with good images so you could try the techniques on your own. It's a little old though with some methods being obsolete or seldom used. It's definitely interesting and helpful though. I will be keeping my copy as a reference for future work. This volume is dated in style and content. About 65 of it needs to be updated or written more effectively. The writer's original intent was good but not totally achieved. Passing years have eroded that mediocrity. An expanded revision could produce a solid classic, instead of an aging, overpriced tomb.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. He gave me them after flicking through my series of three books and not being very impressed, with what was covered by the lack of depth to the lacking content. I did mention at the time he gave me these that I would try and complete the sets, he didn’t rate my chances very highly and to be honest, it took me years as at first it was the pre-internet days (yes kids, it hasn’t always been around!) and involved me searching fruitlessly around second hand shops everywhere. Thanks to the advent of the internet, I managed to complete the sets for him about five or six years ago and he was made up. I will, however, update this as I’ve got a lot more to post on this subject and could write for hours on it.To complete the collection, you then had the option of paying the princely sum of 1 Shilling (5 pence) for a hard-backed cloth case to keep everything together, a bit like the modern day Deagostini magazines that you buy each week, and eventually (after remortgaging your home) have enough plastic pieces to build your very own Millenium Falcon, when in fact the money you have spent could have bought you your own nearly-new spaceship!! Click any of the images below for larger versions. If you’re looking for the original then I’ve not seen any more about and my copy is most definitely not for sale. A quick search online and you will find a reprint available for around ?20 to ?30 and it is well worth a look, though as a disclaimer, I cannot vouch for the prints or pictures being as good as the original! For example, he wrote books on everything from Practical Gas Fitting, Taxidermy, Knotting and Splicing Ropes and Cordage, to Saddlery and many many more. Born in Australia in 1854 and passing away in England in 1916, I think Paul Hasluck must be rated as the Father of DIY writing! Part 2 Joinery covering Stairs, Handrails, Soffits, Niches etc. Part 3 Cabinet Making covering Furniture both plain and ornamental. In Joinery, therefore, it is requiste that all the parts should be much more nicely adjusted to each other than in Carpentry, and all surfaces which are to be exhibited to the eye should be made perfectly smooth. There are not really any plans as such; instead, the book focuses on plates of various geomentry drawings, such as determining the true shape of circular sashes and then more woodwork related, i.e. formation of shutting joints of doors. Applied to the Arts of Smithing, Joinery, Carpentry, Turning, Bricklayery. To which is Added, Mechanick Dyalling: Shewing how to Draw a True Sun-dyal on Any Given Plane, However Scituated; Only with the Help of a Straight Ruler and a Pair of Compasses, and Without Any Arithmetical Calculation” ) by Joseph Moxon, a Fellow of The Royal Society and published in 1677. Tredgold passed away in 1829 long before my version of the book was pusblished, so I think some of his work was complied into this version (and later versions). Born on 20th April 1765 in East Lothian, Nicholson died aged 78 in Carlisle in 18th June 1844 after cramming what seems like more than several lifetime’s worth of work in to his seventy-eight years (where did they find the time?!). You can read more on Peter Nicholson here. It’s very in depth on geometry and how to draw projections of various three dimensional shapes (of which I hated at college!), tools, early woodworking machinery, common woodworking joints, shop fitting, and the aforementioned sections of questions! The mortise augur on the combination machine looks particulaiy fearsome. Despite it’s name it doesn’t cover car repairs, it’s very much in the mould of more modern DIY books that give you an outline on how to do various jobs as is centred on the amateur, but the authors defination of amatuer probably differs from todays defination as there are some complex things included. It later moves on to woodturning, marquetry and woodcraving as well so a good all round book. I’ve several books that are similar to this and I love them for the range of things they cover excluding joinery, from gas fitting to making whitewash to gilding to dressing stone.
