For quick jobs, the scanner's auto tone is fine, but I prefer to turn it off and manually adjust in Photoshop (using 3rd party color and shadow correction filters or even the built-in auto levels). With the slide attachment, you can do 4 slides at a time. The software is intelligent enough to preview all 4 slides at a time, allowing you to rotate in software prior to scanning You do have to pay some attention to slide orientation when you put the slides into the slide tray, otherwise scanning color slides is a snap. Scanner color correction (auto-tone) works very well in this case. Unlike slides, scanning 35 mm film negatives can be very slow at 1200 dpi (about 1 per minute). However, the quaility is very good. So good that you will see every blemish and lint on the negative. I'm not using the supplied software, since I have better alternatives, but the bundle seems good enough to manage workflow. I use the medium setting with outstanding results. I have scanned 70 year old negatives that had many scratches and the results were amazing. I would highly recomend this unit. I only have a few negative comments on this item. The first is that most color slides scan darker than they should, but the window that you store them from allows you to lighten them before storage. It does not allow you to darken them. The biggest problem with an otherwise pefect machine is: There is a cord from the scanner top to the back of the bottom portion of the scanner. After opening and closing the unit's top many times, the cord works its way out of the plug in the bottom half and the scanner doesn't operate and you have no idea what is wrong. Thankfully I have a friend who had one and he told me to make sure the cord was plugged in. He had to call Cannon to find out. The last comment is the start up booklet. It gets you going fast, but is limited to what all the features do in the scanner program. I contacted Canon support because of colour issues with scanning slides and their response was unqualified and unprofessional - they stopped responding. The speed of the scans even at 3200 dpi is excellent, but this requires USB 2.0 - one medium format negative: 2-3 minutes. For scanning slides you have to use the supplied SilverFast software, the Canon interface cannot handle the colour cast on slide films. We recently reviewed the Epson V600, which directly competes with the CanoScan 8800F in this class. There's no way around that, unfortunately. Scanning, even on a nimble unit like the CanoScan 8800F, is never going to be as fast as taking a snapshot. So we still recommend taking the shoeboxes to a reliable lab for quick digitization of your collection and using a scanner at home to work on your favorite images. This number reveals the ability of the scanner to see both detail in dark areas of your originals (the highlights in negatives) and detail in the highlights. Many companies fudge the number by combining two scans (one for the shadows and another for the highlights). Third-party scanning software now offers just that capability (multi-exposure), so it isn't quite the crime it was. We'll just have to carefully examine the scans to determine if the CanoScan 8800F measures up. Both units rely on a consistent LED light source, which makes it feasible to use a generic profile that does a good enough job for most originals. That profile is accessed by the manufacturer's software. If you're using third-party scanning software like VueScan, you can build your own profile. And setting up the CanoScan 8800F was so simple you might wonder if you're getting your money's worth. We just lifted that out and set it aside. We removed the top two Styrofoam blocks that hold it securely in the box and simply slid it out, leaving the bottom two blocks in place. That's covered to prevent scratches, so we removed the plastic by first pulling off the orange tape. We left the scanner locked until we located it where we'd actually be using it. You should lock it whenever you move it. Before we made that connection, we installed the software. We inserted the CD, ran the installer, agreed to do the Easy Install to install all the components (including Arcsoft's PhotoStudio) and let it run. Startup is very quick. You'll hear the scanner move briefly back and forth and then it's ready. The LEDs require no warmup. You have to give it a firm little push to get it all the way in. It should be perpendicular to the back of the unit if you've done it right. We hadn't done it right, so the software couldn't find the scanner. It found it just fine. To use them you have to have installed the software that recognizes them (MP Navigator EX), which is done for you with the Easy Install option. The Quick Start Guide explains this if you need help. It's still another box to put on your desk, unlike a multifunction device that can scan film like the MP980.
