This blinks when you turn a knob to change the value of a setting, or put the OD-20 into write standby while a memory is selected, and blinks rapidly while data is being written. If you don't want to take 15 pedals to a gig, this is a great alternative!I found that at least four of the key sounds from this pedal where foundational. That is, those four sounds will get me a lot of mileage and are not once-in-while special effects. So, for me this is four pedals in the space of two and about the price of two, and that's a bargain. From there, all the extra sounds are the occasional special effects that are the cherries on top. The controls are logical and provide a fair amount of flexibility. As for the quality of the tone.If you are a boutique-pedal junkie, then this won't be your main sound, but it might be all those others that you need to fill in the holes.Any minor differences that you perceive - or more likely think you perceive - can be tweaked with your EQ. In those cases you have to tweak things properly and use your brain a bit to get a dead-on reproduction of those pedals - but it is by no means difficult to do and if you understand how to use tone controls properly you can do it in seconds. I don't know why Boss can develop and manufacture sophisticated digital signal processing models such as found in the OD-20, but still can't manage to put a simple, cheap, true bypass circuit in their pedals. I suspect it's because Boss makes a separate line switching pedal (the LS-2 Line Selector) that they don't want to make semi-obsolete by putting true bypass in their other pedals. For that reason, I don't want to give this thing a full 5 stars but think it deserves better than 4 stars, so I'm rounding up to 5 because there's no 4.5 stars option here. If you play a fair bit with the pedal disengaged and are really picky about your tone, then you'll want to get a line switcher so you can truly bypass the OD-20 when you're not using it. Other than that, this pedal is a stompbox dream - it really does have accurate models of all those pedals in one box. In other words this box is best used for wild distortion, fuzz and octave effects. A low octave boost pot adds heavy depth on tap. There's a BOSS MT-2 emulation that also rocks. Switching between them is not the most elegant, I don't recommend it if you're trying to switch between 2 sounds back and forth quickly. But if you set your amp at a warm clean sound, you can go from that to wild mad fuzz in a stomp. Add an overdrive pedal for something in between or use a clean and an overdrive channel in your amp. Did I mention the OD-20 can also switch your amp's channels for you. Great if you don't have the original switch for your two channel amp. It's sturdy and reliable, it's a tank. Non stop fuzz face and big muff emulation. Pretty straight forward other than the programing and even that wasn't too bad once you play with it a little and get use to it. Very versatile and sounds great. Shipped right away and came on time. I dig it I'm sure you will too. I do suggest getting a power cord (about 10 bucks) or expect to use a lot of batteries. The DM-3 comes in at a lower price point on the used market, but some prefer the cleaner nature of its repeats. It uses a very simple circuit with a single op-amp and two germanium diodes, while also outputting more gain (46.5dB) than its competitors, namely the BOSS DS-1 (35dB) and Tube Screamer (41dB).First introduced in1981, the CS-2 Compression Sustainer was a development on the circuit found in the CS-1, and used a VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) instead of the photocouplers found in the CS-1. By slowing down one of two playback reel tapes by around 20ms, the time delay causes a flanging effect. The Electric Mistress allowed players to take this tape-manipulating sound out of the studio and onto the bandstand. There were numerous design changes, alongside minor changes to the schematic and a varying range of PCBs; the most commonly seen features a large green font. A filter matrix switch was added in 1977 and the introduction of the Deluxe version followed in 1978, sold alongside the standard version until the early 80s. Early models are famed for their fluid characteristics and chorus flanging.Famous for its low noise and hard edge, the DS-1 initially featured a Toshiba TA7136AP preamp chip, not an op-amp, during its early production days in Japan. This model is easily distinguishable due to its silver screw and long dash. These chips were still manufactured in Japan, but resulted in a lower output and more transparent drive. Its more recent revisions have come within the past two decades: once in 2000, when both the pedal and chip (Mitsubishi op-amp) were made in Taiwan, and finally in 2006, when a New Japan Radio NJM2904L op-amp became the primary chip. Featuring two straightforward Output and Sensitivity controls, for volume and compression respectively, the Dyna Comp became an immediate hit, favoured by the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Lowell George, before landing at the feet of David Gilmour and Andy Summers. Both pedals, particularly box-logo models from the early 1970s, have a sound that is close enough that only the keenest compressor aficionados can tell the difference, resulting in a continuation of the classic Dyna Comp sound.
