boss od-2r manualThe OD-2R’s only new feature is the remote connector. It accepts and optional a latching footswitch, like the FS-5L, and can be used to switch the pedal’s turbo mode on or off. Today, the made-in-Japan specimens are sought after for collections and battle-ready pedalboards. The OD-1 was already legendary so following up to it was an impossible task. The design goal was to create a pedal with two modes. In mode one its sound should be similar to the OD-1, but in the turbo mode it should have more distortion and more gain. A tone control is included to give the user better control over the sound. The OD-2 is built using only discrete components (no integrated circuits). After the production was discontinued, 1994, the pedal continued its life as the slightly modified OD-2R for another 4 years. The OD-2R has the same internal circuitry as the OD-2. It adjusts the higher frequencies, so, at the minimum it makes the tone darker, at the maximum it becomes more brilliant and open. When it is OFF it produces a mild and sweet Overdrive, similar to that of the previous version. On the contrary, when it is ON it generates a very powerful signal, with much gain and a pleasant natural feedback. But i have to say that this second option isn't extraordinary. Perhaps is only a personal impression, but the sensation is that when this selector is active the pedal is too much artificial, without an identity. The signal is very powerful, yes, but the final result is disappointing, at least as regards my personal taste. It colours very much the tone of the guitar, but it turns out rather flexible. It produces a good sound that can go from a slight crunch to a distortion that is perfect for the classic Rock. If you can buy the OD-2, obviously used, it can be very useful in many contexts to create a natural and pleasant distortion. Essentially, it's an Overdrive that produces a warm and pleasant tone. Perfect for Blues, Country or Rock. The DS-2 is slightly noisy, but it's not a great problem. It has 3 potentiometers for level, drive, tone control and a switch for selecting two modes of operation. I had to use it to believe that a good power supply will get rid of all unwanted noise in the signal chain, compared to a cheaper one. I actually have 4 of them, gathered throughout the years, all still working flawlessly, and use all four plugged in a power strip under my Pedalboard Classic JR giving me a total of 2000mA and they power 8-9 pedals (mostly analog but also a couple of digital ones) without any problems. No ground loops, no unwanted noise, no need for a professional power supply (such a cioks) yet. Works really well and the build quality is top notch. I Have used them both live and in studio.
