Adjust the Sens knob to the threshold level where you want the pedal to cut off and adjust the Decay knob to how fast you want the sound to disappear. It’s not going to get much easier than that. The NF-1 should by normal conventions be called NG-1, but NG could be interpreted as No Good so NF-1 for Noise Filter was chosen instead. Unlike other noise gates on the market, the NF-1 has been designed to perform at optimum efficiency in noise reduction without adding any unwanted coloration.http://mosvag.ru/img/lib/boss-rdd-10-manual.xml Pedals with serial number earlier than 15xx00 are of the so called long dash type where the hyphen between NF and 1 are longer than normal. Did you miss your activation email ? It took me only 1 hour for the whole procedure:-) It was the DC jack. On the first pin of the DC jack it had 8,5 V, and on the other pin it was showing no voltage. So I first tried with some contact spray. E-e. No go. I compared it to my other boss pedal, and than I saw the problem: the little 'tongue' which should be touching the first pin of the DC jack from inside was bent, so that the effect was getting no battery power. I bent it back with a small screwdriver, and then it worked. Easy, no?:-) BTW, that thermistor SDT-1000 in the NF-1, is it just a 'dummy' to scare away potential circuit cloners, or does it have a significant role in the circuit. Cannot I just put a normal resistor instead. Greetings, Marek p.s. NF-1 Service Manual can be found here: There is also a SG-1 Service manual there: If I am right, then you can put a resistor here and it will function pretty much the same, but you would have to pay more attention to adjusting the input level. That's my guess, anyway! I have another question regarding this effect: Will the circuit benefit from upgrading that old u741 to some modern opamp? ( e.g. I have here OP27 and OPA134PA ) Here's what somebody suggested: They have other mods for other Boss pedals, as well. Greetings, MArek The opamp is not even in the signal path, it's part of the envelope detector. The guy doesn't even explain the result of his mods. That horrible, unwanted and mood-destroying hiss or screech that always seems to happen at the worst possible times. It can be present as high-pitched, nasal and mid-ranged, low and humming or via a heap of other ways. What we mean when we say “noise” is almost always in relation to something undesirable. We don’t mean the experimental musical style, also called “noise”. Some of that stuff is great. Noise in this instance is the audio we can hear that we don’t want in our overall sound. Noise in the guitar world is usually the result of electromagnetic interference (EMI) which is all around us in the modern world. This EMI interacts with many guitar cables, pickups, amplifiers and other electronic equipment and when fed into a guitar amplifier (particularly amps with high preamp gain), can produce a lot of unwanted noise. Sometimes noise can even stem from maintenance issues such as cables, dirty pots and jacks on pedals and other gear, damaged amplifiers, poorly wound and installed pickups or other guitar electronics to name but a few common causes. As every player and their setup is different, noise can come from many different sources.http://www.acquaproget.com/images/boss-nf-1-manual.pdf The best way to avoid noise is to use quality equipment, look after it and have it serviced. But that’s often easier said than done. Simply put, you know when noise is present and you definitely want it gone. Many guitar players who play at high volume with high gain find themselves in an ongoing battle with noise, hum or unwelcome feedback. The solution is to incorporate some sort of tool to defeat the interference. For many players, that solution is the BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor. Contributed by Byron Struck and Matt Walsham for the Roland Australia Blog KILL THE NOISE In continuous production since 1987, the BOSS NS-2 is a best-selling staple of BOSS pedals. Used by everyone from bedroom players to international touring bands like Metallica, Slipknot, U2 and The Dillinger Escape Plan among many others, the BOSS NS-2 is an industry standard in noise suppression. Its innovative design is as effective today as it was at the time of its release. Whether you are looking to minimise unwanted noise in your rig, or perhaps even use it as a tone-tool for sculpting aggressive rhythm guitar textures, depends on how you connect it to your rig, and understanding just how it works. GETTING CONNECTED At first glance, you’ll see the NS-2 has 4 jacks. These jacks allow the NS-2 to be configured in 2 different ways, depending on your rig and your desired outcome. For the purposes of this article, we’ll refer to these two different configurations as the SIMPLE method and the ADVANCED method. SIMPLE METHOD This is the simplest way to use the NS-2. Simply insert the NS-2 into your signal chain as the last item AFTER your noisy pedals or amp. The limitation with the Simple method is that at high noise levels (common with high gain pedals and amps), the Noise Suppressor has difficulty in determining what is noise and what is your actual guitar signal. This can manifest a problem when playing long sustained notes with high preamp gain.http://www.alfainstal.pl/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626f4fa17433d---bosch-wfb-4000-manual.pdf As the note starts to die out, the Noise Suppressor in Simple mode may end up “clamping down” and cutting the end of the note off. This effect can actually be desirable for some players. Guitarists who play high-gain, staccato rhythms often relish the “choppy” effect that the Simple Method can deliver. If you are looking to use a Noise Suppressor to “tighten up” your high gain rhythms, then the Simple connection method may be best for you. To combat this problem, the NS-2 was designed with an intelligent “detection circuit” designed to differentiate between your guitar signal and unwanted noise. To take advantage of this functionality, we can connect using the ADVANCED method. When correctly connected using this method, the NS-2 will “detect” your guitar’s signal and allow the noise suppression circuit to activate only as your guitar signal dies out, resulting in a more natural guitar sound. The NS-2 was the first pedal to achieve this style of noise suppression and remains an industry standard still today. Once you have the pedal connected in either method, the NS-2 becomes an invaluable tool. The key to optimum results, is understanding just what the main control knobs do. NS-2 CONTROLS The THRESHOLD control sets how sensitive you wish the Noise Suppressor to be, i.e. the “threshold” at which the Noise Suppression begins to do its work. Setting the THRESHOLD all the way to MAX will cut nearly anything, including guitar signal. If you want to back it off a bit, you’ll also be able to still get nice feedback swells if you desire. A bit of breathing room here can be good. The DECAY control allows you to set to how fast or slow you want the signal to fade out when the suppression circuitry kicks in. Slower DECAY settings will give a more natural overall guitar sound, and avoid the end of long notes being “chopped off” as they die out.chongthamhaiphong.com/upload/files/91-yamaha-fzr-600-manual.pdf Faster DECAY settings are favoured amongst many metal guitarists for the way in which it creates a “choppy” sound that suits tight, high gain rhythm playing. The MODE SELECTOR knob offers options for different ways to utilise the NS-2. In REDUCTION mode, the NS-2 will suppress unwanted noise, as determined by the Threshold. To activate Reduction mode, simply select it via the Mode Selector and press the pedal ON. If the pedal is not switched on in Mute mode, the pedal will work the same as it would in Reduction mode. Essentially, Mute mode does not have a bypass feature. It will reduce your noise but will kill all sound when you step on the pedal. WHAT ABOUT EFFECTS? Ok, good question. You can absolutely use effects and other pedals with the NS-2! However. Keep in mind that the NS-2 has a DECAY feature. Best way to use reverb and delay effects with the NS-2 is to put them AFTER it does its work. You can also put modulation pedals here if you want too. We’ve discussed using overdrive pedals with the NS-2 earlier in this article. But, if you’re using the 4-cable or “X-method”, the only pedal you should plug into before the NS-2 is your tuner. Whichever setup you choose, the BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor will clean up your overall sound while maintaining the dynamics and nuances of your playing. Certainly a crucial pedal for live, studio and rehearsal use, (almost as much as a tuner is!), the BOSS NS-2 is your go-to tool for clear and unobstructed tone. While you may never get tired of the classic sound of Roland Get yourself tuned down and turn. Then I'd forget cables, power supplies, etc., and end up annoying myself. My mates had been telling me over and over to build a pedalboard. So, I got a board, and went about assembling the six pedals I though I had, to discover I had nearly double the amount. Yikes! Anyway, once built, isolated power supplies used and quality patch cables utilised, I was still getting noise. I have a couple of different overdrive and distortion pedals along with a boost pedal. If I want to go from clean to overdrive, I'd naturally incorporate some noise. So I asked my mates and they said to stick a noise gate at the end of the chain. Did some research, and this little box came up at about 4th on most lists and the price was right brand new on Amazon. I'd seen good reviews for other Donner pedals although never owned one so: Click, Click and it was ordered. It arrived in a couple of days. Boxed. Nothing really fancy about what you get: pedal and short instruction sheet, but what do you actually need. Stuck it on the end of the chain after the boost and it just works. No noise. The only pedal it can't tame on my board is a Blackstar HT-Distx, but that one's such a nasty beast of a pedal, if you're using it, you've just got to expect you are going to make noise. So I'm well happy with it. It's tiny as well so takes up little space. There's rubber on the base that has to be removed to get velcro to stick to the pedal board, but that's nothing new. It's solidly built and easy to operate. All in all, a cracking little pedal. Did exactly what I hoped it would do. Nothing more. Nothing less.Does what it says it does. It came on it's own in an attractive small black cardboard box. A patch cable to connect the output to the amp There are three ports, the power port is at the top (in relation to the picture of the pedal), the right side of the pedal is the input port from the guitar. The left side port is slightly below centre and this is connected via a patch cable to the amplifier. We tried to balance the guitar output with through this noise pedal once it was all hooked up.With it set to the lower left all the guitar output plus hiss and noise passes through. By gradually rotating the black knob clockwise, you can hear the change in the level of hiss fall. If you do this to the point where the hiss disappears and no further, that would be the level you use the pedal at. If you rotate it fully to the right, all the guitar output is cancelled out, so there would be no output signal to amplify. We found that the volume and tone settings on the electric guitar was important as this fed through varying degrees of noise. You have to play with it to find out where to set it for your session. Overall, we're very pleased that we can have a clearer output during guitar practice. It’s essentially a noise gate - got an annoying hum in your amp. This will allow you to set a level at which any sound below it will not make it to the amp. Thus, quieter operation. The housing is metal, strong and robust like all of Donner’s range that I’ve tried so far. Really simple to use - just put it in front of your amp and dial the large knob until the noise is gone. Harder settings are faster but can be more abrupt, lower is slower but can leave slight tails of audio etc. There’s no way of setting this but it does work. I’m not sure of the validity of the true bypass claim as I’m using it in one of the loops of my ES-8 switcher at the moment. A great little peddle for those on a budget or others that just don’t want to spend a fortune to keep their amp quiet. Highly recommended. There is, however, a very very fine line between killing the buzz and 'taking the ends off' the reverb notes on the delay pedal. I'm assuming that this goes 'last' on the board; that being the case you don't want it squishing all your hard work earlier in the sequence. That said, it does a blinding job for the price, which is less than a third of some other pieces of kit out there. Overall, I'm happy with it, and would recommend it to people I play with. Nuff said.It has replaced an EHX Silencer on my board, which cost more than twice as much and didn't do as good a job. Ok the Donner Noise Killer does very slightly flatten my tone, but I have re-EQ'd to compensate for it and it's barely noticeable now. The build quality is good but not the best but come on, it's 25 quid. Very impressed! I bought this after seeing it in the 'top five noisegates' in several articles, where it was up against pedals in the ?100 to ?200 range and held its own. It's worth noting Donners products are cheaper when bought directly through their website so check it out!I have the Boss Ns-2 on another board and the Donner Noise Killer is just as good. Btw I play professionally and am in an Iron Maiden Tribute Band and a Deep Purple Tribute Band. I use Fender Stratocasters (single coil configuration) in a Marshall JVM 210H, I will also play through a Marshall JCM 800, or JCM 2000 DSL 50 and drive the front of the 2 aforementioned amps with a YJM308, which is a very noisy overdrive. Noise killer is perfect and without any degradation due to noise cancellation.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Great service. This is my first noise gate pedal, using it in front of my AC10. Seems well made, solid metal body. Also ordered a Donner Fuzz which is a lot of fun to experiment with, a lighter Fuzz but a great way to experiment with fuzz at a reasonable price.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again I've never felt I needed a noise gate, but I had one tiny spot left on my pedal board and I wanted something to fill that spot. This pedal is the perfect fit, and being dune buggy green, it looks great. The little skull graphic is cool too. It doesn't just look great, it works well too. I put it in my effects loop return. I turn the dial until the point where the hum just stops. I don't have any trouble with it killing the sound of sustained notes. The pedal is built well too. For the price, it really is a great deal. It shipped in a day too, which was a nice surprise. It arrived one day after I ordered it anSorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again It’s decent for the money but anything past the 12 o-clock setting changes your tone drastically. If your playing with a lot of distortion (heavy metal) it cleans up about 75-80 of unwanted noise. There is still a slight hum without sacrificing the tone.Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
