It is extremely well built (as you would expect from a former Boss flagship product) with large and clear displays. The main thing is, is that it is so easy to use and great fun as well, with several operating modes to suit any style of working. Budget loopers are great, but you will bump into limitations so, if you want to play with the big boys, this is the one to go for! An adapter is included. Back in the day loopers used to be fiendishly complicated bits of kit with multiple buttons and sequences to go through to get them working. Thankfully, over time this process has been made far simpler and more user friendly. This particular model, for example, has just one knob for the level, an LED indicator, and a pedal. It also has a stereo in and out option, plus another out for an additional pedal if you wish to take your looping to the next level. Like the other Boss pedals you'll no doubt be familiar with, it's powered by a 9v battery or the standard Boss power supply, and as you would expect, it's built like a tank. One cool feature is that a recorded phrase is retained in the pedal's memory even after it's turned off, which is great news if you have just put down a perfect loop and there is a power cut, or the battery runs out. Even by Boss's own admission this is a bit of a gimmick, but it’s also quite handy to see where you are in the loop, especially if it’s a long one, and it helps getting your next one in time. It may be because I have used various loopers in the past that I find it so easy to drive, but I'm quite sure a virgin looper would have no problems getting to grips with this one, quite quickly. The level knob is great for controlling how much you have coming through, and you only have to press the pedal lightly to get it working, it's very intuitive. My only gripe (and it's not confined to this looper) is that you have to press the pedal twice to get a loop to stop, which can be quite awkward; and why when you hold down to delete what you have done does it have to play the loop back at you until its cleared. Would it not be possible to have it offer a silent delete. Yes, you could turn the volume down but again it's something to think about. These are only small issues, and the pedal as it’s intended works great. Live looping has quickly become a technique that has taken the art of live performance to a whole new level. Any musician, from bedroom producers to guitar gods, can add their own flair to their part, solo or track by using a Loop Station live on stage. Looping can even inspire a completely new song when used in the studio! But what is looping and how can you add it to your repertoire.What you do next with this phrase is up to you. But don’t stop there. The real power of looping comes from “overdubbing”. This is the process of recording over the previously recorded phrase. It’s similar to the same way you would overdub vocals when recording a song. The instructions for use are clear and, after a couple of go's at synching my playing with my pressing of the pedal, I was away. It does exactly as it says. There is unlimited dubbing although you'll end up with a wall of sound with too many. My first real effort was 'Breathe' of Dark Side of the Moon. I was thinking about forming a band at first but didn’t get the results I’d hoped for. I was blown away. I’ve never used a looper before so I was wary on whether or not I’d be able to use it and if it was worth paying a little extra for this looper if things didn’t end up working out. Anyway, I decided to get it and I’ve had a few practices now since Christmas Day. It’s travel size, compact and I find it easy to use. The only negative, is that the buttons are quite hard to press down and sometimes the machine gets a bit confused with what you’re trying to use it for. It’s going to take time to get used to it, but one thing I’m looking forward to doing is programming my own drum samples in that I used in the studio. Chris soundscape man 5.0 out of 5 stars I did not buy the boss one but a British pedal maker called 'bright onions' they make a micro double switch pedal that does the job for ?24, excellent and really small, together they are formidable. I do also have a electro harmonix 4 track looper but it is very complicated, reverse sample, slow sample, but i never use the effects and this boss pedal has the same quality of sound.Being stereo is a bonus very good if you use two amps or a stereo set up obviously but equally as useful if you just want to run mono again this is obvious. The only negative to me is the big switch which is part of the Boss design hence buying the bright onions pedal was a no brainer as you get the normal button type switch which always feels more solid and immediate to me, that's just me though may be others will prefer the boss switch. There is the electro harmonix 720 which is approx ?118 compared to this at ?85, both are stereo and the EH does has a loop selector switch where you can load up 10 samples from a computer for example, and half speed but no use for me as mentioned earlier I needed a simple practice pedal to noodle over, and when live for an acoustic set both of these needs are done with this pedal.Please try again later. Forget the manual, there are many YouTube videos which will give you a good basic understanding of how to set up and use the Loop Station. The manual is good for reference purposes. My only issue is with the tapping a rhythm control, it seems even though I set up a particular beat and then save the whole loop I find the rhythm defaults back to standard on switch on. You get two banks to play with each you can overdub.One of the ways it does let it self down is by only being able to remove 1 layer before just adding it back in.This is a little confusing but trust me it does kinda let it down a bit.You have a few effects to layer over everything, you can't select a bank seperate.So again you have to be careful with how you stack your tracks and banks up.If you tap the right pedal you have a way to set a tempo.What I do to get around this is preload a few track with drum loops via the PC and then I know the exact tempo of that bank when I start the loop.Trying to tap a tempo perfect is very hard. That said the pedal will set it's tempo when you tap it and stick to it.I run a guitar, bass and keyboard (via my phone) into mine and it works great.It's really not too hard to get started with and you'll have hours of fun jamming. First, no matter how long you’re in overdub mode, the older material doesn’t age, fade, die or degrade.The RC-202 has two separate stereo tracks, each of any length. The only practical limit appears to be the 2GB maximum file size. Data are stored in WAV format (16-bit, 44.1kHz) and the internal capacity allows for up to three hours of recording time — seriously. Your time can be allocated freely amongst eight banks, each with eight phrase memories (the contents of the two tracks). Best of all you can write during playback and therefore develop song-like structures on the fly. Furthermore, at a press of the Memory button, the eight FX buttons act as phrase selectors, with the added advantage that the empty ones are quickly identified. There’s generous use of colour throughout: red, green, purple, orange and blue are all available to link tracks to effects, show playback direction, running mode and so forth. It’s not all plain sailing though, as the minimal display introduces a few challenges. Not only are all the effect algorithms reduced to three-character abbreviations, but their parameters are similarly abbreviated, so you have quite a lot to remember. It’s worth downloading the parameter guide and keeping it close to the printed owner’s manual. This, incidentally, looks reassuringly thick and engrossing.Input levels are represented clearly in green, amber or red and there’s a dedicated knob on hand to keep overloads at bay. The process must work smoothly because I never needed to give it a thought, and I didn’t lose sync once. If you don’t like what you hear, you can undo the last recording or trash the whole thing at any stage and start over. Assuming you’re happy, the exercise is then repeated for the second track, saving your work to new phrase memories as you go if necessary. The controls and shortcuts are well crafted for fast hands-on operation, but there are foot-pedal options in abundance for when you don’t have a hand free. The effects range from good to excellent and include sync’ed delays, filters, reverb, slicers, repeaters, vinyl effects and more. The FX buttons are named according to type but it transpires these are only guidelines. Within certain restrictions you can change the effects under each button and thus add greater versatility. For performance, there’s a large knob to control the effect’s most significant parameter. However, there’s a great deal to explore and to exploit. I had mixed feelings about the vocoder but was very pleasantly surprised by the Synth effect, which tracked my voice surprisingly well. Recording some voice-triggered synth, then overdubbing some robot voice and pitch-shifter effects was a total blast; it suggested a powerful and compact travelling setup with just the addition of the tiny microphone borrowed from my Korg Microsampler.Additionally, tracks can play in reverse mode or play through just once. After that, each hit of the play button will fire it off (in sync) to play right through. When you make one or both tracks one-shot or reverse, the status is remembered in each phrase memory, along with track level, rhythm and so on. Effect selections are stored either per phrase memory or per bank, which is darn flexible. In the RC-202, you need to press the Track button before adjusting the level with the Value encoder. I occasionally managed to select a new phrase doing this, and in the process lost whatever I’d been working on — so it’s worth stressing that you need to write your changes often to keep them safe.For each signature there’s a matching groove and I found any of the simple hi-hat patterns were an ideal metronome, especially when delivered direct to the headphone output (bypassing the main stereo mix). Finally, phrase memories can be selected remotely using MIDI program changes, and these are also transmitted to enable synchronisation with other pattern-based gear (eg. Electribes, Elektron boxes, another RC-202). This also means you can incorporate slick, studio-constructed loops (provided they are in the correct format) into your live performances. The inverse option is possibly even more exciting: you can arrange all the loops you created live and computer-free into finished songs.For example, when building a series of loops from scratch, if you choose a new location for the phrase, both the current slot and the new destination are written to. It would seem more logical to only save to the one chosen. And sometimes, after a track has been in one-shot mode and you’ve changed it to loop again, there’s an audible pause at the end of the first pass. Generally though, it worked reliably and intuitively, although I must just mention one last issue: time-stretching. When externally synced, the time-stretch function becomes pretty ropey if, post-recording, you deviate more than a few bpm from the source tempo.
