In Boss’s older RC-2x series, the RC-20XL offered a wide range of features in a much smaller (and cheaper) package than the monster RC-50, but easier access to its features than the much smaller RC-2. The RC-20XL was actually an upgrade of the now obsolete RC-20, which only offered 5 minutes and 30 seconds of recording time, compared to the RC-20XL’s 16 minutes. The pedal houses two pedals for remote access, and has various dials and buttons for it’s more intimate features. The sixteen minutes of memory can be spread across up to eleven different phrases, which can be recalled at any time. So if you jam something out that you want to use live, you can write it to memory, and then it’s ready to use live. There are outputs for your amp, and a couple for the additional pedals needed to access more features when operating the RC-20XL remotely. The fact that these additional pedals are necessary is a point of some frustration, as it of course adds to the overall price. The mounted footswitches are all you’ll really need to use for an initial play around. Not quite as dramatic, I concede, but there eventually does come a time to kill the sound and bask in silent pride.The middle dial goes all the way up to eleven, but unfortunately isn’t volume (output volume on the left, and two for the inputs on the right); it is used to simply select a phrase. A light beside the knob will tell you if you have something saved in the selected location already. This dial is the only way to select a phrase without use of an external (and separately sold) footswitch. Think of it as having your own personal unimaginative, one-armed drummer to dutifully whack out any one of eight beats at a moment’s notice. Unfortunately, though, there is no option to manually dial in a tempo in BPM. The problem with this is that it beats your music with it’s archaic mixing hammer and leaves you with a lot of noticeable system-intervention. Or there’s always the old-fashioned way if you’re the hands-on sort. Hit the button, and your phrase plays in reverse. Cool if you’re into odd ambient soundscapes or delving into the glamorous world of subliminal, guitar-based, Satanic messages. In other words, when you start playing, it records automatically. So essentially, eleven is your lot. Also, technologically, it’s worth noting that the RC-20XL only records in mono. It is transparent, only messing around with your sound in ways that you want it to. If you stack up overdub after overdub there is some loss in sound quality though, but that is to be expected. Additionally, the manual is very helpful, and after a few minutes of being a bookworm, you’ll be back to rock star. Because of the functionality of the RC-20XL it can be used to improve your playing, either by giving you an endless backing track to jam to, or through any of it’s features, for example: the ability to adjust a piece’s tempo could serve as a daily shred workout to gradually improve speed. It is, in a lot of ways, a vital companion for the solo guitar player. The RC-20XL comes at a more affordable price than the larger RC-50, but you have to remember to tack on the cost of the footswitches and the mains adapter. Unless you want to consume more batteries than the Duracell Bunny on speed, that is. There are some hidden functions that you must trawl through the manual to fully understand, and you might have to spend a bit of money to get a solid live set-up, but on the whole the RC-20XL provides more than enough for standard looping needs, and is a vital part of many guitarists’ set ups. It is a direct upgrade of the RC-20, which offered a lot of the same ideas in a more basic form, and has now of course been made obsolete by the new model. The main areas that have been improved are the memory (Sixteen minutes recording compared to the RC-20’s paltry five minutes and thirty seconds), and the implementation of the pedal’s features, which will be discussed in more detail later. This is a pretty old looper and some of the newer loopers are improving on sound quality. For example, the TC Electronics Ditto and Ditto X2, and the Pigtronix Infinity all have superior audio quality at 24 bits. Of those, I would go for the Infinity just because it has more features. As for functioning well in live settings, it kind of depends how complex you want to get with your live looping. For casual playing, you’ll be fine with any pedal that has at least two footswitches so that you can stop and clear loops without having to double tap. If you want to get complex and, for example, control 3 independent loops each with their own layers of overdubs, maybe check out the monster Boss RC-300. Then again, you can probably pick up an old RC-20XL on ebay for super cheap. Its almost impossible to do a clean count in and drop in drums and the first loop without a weird milli-pause on completion of the first loop. For me it isn’t feasible, too much plastic and like your review; too many fx are already covered by other dedicated pedals. It was a problem with all of the older Boss Loop Stations. I have a sm58 mic, and a boss rc20xl, but I have to be very close to the mic, and when I sing or play in low volume the looper doesn’t catch it (the vol level go up and down, or directly dissappear). In fact, I love the sound of Boss equipment, but generally hate their interfaces. This one is not so bad. Vids online help remove the mystery and guide you to the functionality. It's a great practice tool, plus it doesn't sleep on your couch, borrow money, or run off with your girlfriend. Upgraded it to RC-30 a couple years ago. But it only has 1 looping channel and just 11 banks, my main reason to upgrade to RC 30. It's a beast for practicing and definitey has it's place on live situations as well. Mic in is awesome for budget situations. RC-30 is the replacement. I keep this thing at the end of my chain, way after my dirt pedals and my noise suppressor loop, so if I want to use the looper, I just have to put up with a bunch of noise. As long as you don't mind the fewer number of memory banks and inputs, the RC-20 will do anything you need a looper to do. Easy to record, overdub, and store loops. Really cool reverse function. I wish my ditto would auto-start recording like the RC-20. The RC-20 also has a mic line in, although its unbalanced, and you can use that as a secondary instrument in as well. A couple of weeks ago I came across the Boss RC-20XL Phrase Recorder in my local music store.Also absent is the ability to multiply or cut short loops. At first, this put me off, but a different tool requires a different approach. Once I’d changed my mind-set, I started to have fun. Hit the left pedal to start recording; hit again to stop and your recorded phrase will play back. Hitting the right pedal will stop playback, then hitting it again will continue playback (from the beginning of the phrase). This is very useful for pausing playback, playing a non-looped section of a song, then bringing the loop back in when done. Glad you liked the review:) I stil find the Rc 20xl to be more reliable than the RC 50. The Rc 20xl is reliable and does not interfere with your playing like some pedals can. It’s very intuitive. It seems it hold down 2 seconds, then when you want to delete something else, 2 more seconds and its back. I bought mine 2nd hand and Its filled with all sorts. I just want to clear it.Select the preset to erase, then hold down SHIFT (EXIT button) then while still holding it down, hit DELETE (WRITE button). That should erase the selected preset. The additional switch is like an equalization section. Firstly, the RC20XL builds on the concept of the now discontinued Lexicon Jam Man (and the looping functions of the more recent Line 6 Delay Modeller) insomuch as you can record loops (called Phrases in Roland-speak) and then overdub onto them live. The Jam Man elicited a lot of interest from our readers, especially when Lexicon stopped building it — it seems that you always want most that which you can't have. The second reason I find this product interesting is from a technology standpoint, as to my knowledge it is the first looper to use flash memory, which means segments of audio can be retained in memory indefinitely for live performance use. Better still, as memory is now much cheaper than it was, the recording time is measured in minutes rather than seconds. In fact a maximum of 16 minutes of memory is available, split between the various loops you wish to record. Clearly this pedal is ideal for admirers of Robert Fripp's guitar wizardry who want to play semi-experimental music live, but it can also be a creative studio tool, as you can build up loops in a very intuitive manner before recording them into your sequencer for future use as the basis for a new song. Although this unit is designed for use mainly with guitar, there's also an unbalanced jack mic input, though I wouldn't recommend this for serious recording work. However, it is useful for those high-street busking sessions with a digeridoo (or whatever) and you can even use the mic and instrument inputs at the same time if need be. The output of the unit is strictly mono and power can come from an optional PSU or from six AA batteries. Digital units like this tend to be fairly hungry on batteries, so the mains adaptor is a good idea — unless you're busking in the high street using a battery amplifier! To help timing, there's also a useful metronome and a facility for having the loop recording end precisely on a beat rather than exactly where you hit the pedal. This is really helpful in creating tight-sounding loops.Because this pedal can store multiple Phrases, and store them after power down, you could load up a few backing tracks into it (from CD, your computer or any other suitable audio source) ready to perform. There's no way to back up loops other than to record the audio output, though, and from my own perspective the ability to dump and load audio files via USB would have made a lot of sense. The Level control sets the playback volume, but from its position on the left-hand side it would be easy to mistake it as some kind of input-gain adjustment, which it isn't. A second level control, labelled Guide, adjusts the level of the guide rhythm part, which is best thought of as a cross between a click track and a simple drum machine. The controls that actually adjust the line and mic levels are located on the far right of the machine, the logic being that this is the side your input jack goes in (to suit right-handed players). Below this is a Tap Tempo button for setting the click tempo in the usual way, but by pressing and holding it you enter a mode where you can step through a number of alternative time signatures, so you don't have to do everything as 'four to the floor'. Furthermore, if the Tap Tempo button is used in conjunction with the shift button, you can select different guide patterns to play along to. A Loop Phrase indicator LED lights if a loop Phrase has been saved in the currently selected location and if this flashes rapidly when you're trying to overdub or save, it means you have insufficient memory left. It also blinks during Phrase playback. Once a Phrase has been recorded, it needs to be stored into internal memory using the Write button, otherwise it will be lost when the unit is powered down. Using Write and Shift together deletes the currently selected Phrase. A second LED does a similar job for a one-shot Phrase being recorded or played back. Also, when this button is pressed and held along with the Shift button, it toggles between loop playback and one-shot playback. The final button that needs some explanation is Mode, which allows the user to select the recording method. Also, when held down along with Shift, it enables the user to decide how playback will stop: there's a choice of Normal (right pedal stops playback immediately), Fade Out, or finish at the end of the current loop cycle. This is designed to produce an approximately flat-sounding response when the pedal is being used through a typical guitar amplifier, which will make pre-recorded backing loops sound less coloured. There's also a centre-cancellation feature for attenuating the vocals in material being recorded via the stereo Aux mini-jack on the rear panel, though how well this works depends on how the original material was mixed. This feature also reduces the level of guitar solos or anything else in the mid-range that's centrally panned in the mix, which tends to leave the rest of the mix sounding a touch 'treated'. Photo: Mark Ewing Recordings must be saved using the Write button if you want them to survive a power-down, in much the same way as you have to save edited synth patches. The rotary switch selects which of the 11 possible Phrases you are saving into, and once you put something important in memory, you can protect it from overwriting to avoid it getting wiped accidentally. When recording loops that need precise timing, the Loop Quantise mode is actually very useful, as it effectively quantises your pressing of the Stop button to the nearest beat (before or after the press), although you have to be working to the timing click (which also provides a count-in) for this to apply. There's also a button-press combination that lets you record a new Phrase at the same tempo as the last one you recorded, which is handy if you've forgotten what that tempo was. When tempo-change processing is being applied, this only relates to tracks that have been saved into memory, and once you've got the tempo right, you have to re-save to make the edit permanent. Ideally you use the pedal well before the end of the Phrase so that you don't run out of time to select the next Phrase. To move up three loop numbers, you simply press the pedal three times. If you select a one-shot Phrase, this stops at the end, so it's a good way to set up song endings if you're using the looper for more traditional songs, though to me this isn't the most creative or practical way to use it. Until then you can Undo and Redo the overdubs as necessary without changing the original loop. Multiple overdubs are also possible, though the sound quality deteriorates slightly every time you add a new layer. Nevertheless, you can build up quite complex layers when playing live without the sound quality suffering to an unacceptable degree, and you can still undo the last layer if it didn't sound right. This is a great way of working if you like jam-based composing and performance, and often you'll find that something magical happens during one of your meanderings that warrants being captured for further development after being copied over to your sequencer. Using the RC20XL at a basic level doesn't take too much getting used to, but you do need to spend an hour or two playing with it before you take it out to a gig. Some of the more advanced features are a bit cryptic, so it pays to keep the handbook where you can find it, but on the whole the RC20XL is a lot of fun and very immediate in the results it can produce. The quality of the recording is also perfectly clean and clear enough for most guitar-related applications. However, technology moves on and there are already announcements from competitors that they will be building similar devices using flash memory cards, enabling the user to take the total recording time up to hours rather than minutes. Whether you need this extra recording time or not depends on how you work. If you work to backing tracks, then I don't think the RC20XL is the best way to go, as it has limited memory and is mono only — an iPod will do the job much more easily. However, if you like to improvise over grooves or loops that you've created earlier, then overdub onto these during live performance, the RC20XL has a lot going for it and it probably has enough memory for you to do a whole set of music based on repeating loops.
