I chose this equalizer after reading opinions on forums. I was looking for a affordable, simple yet effective equalizer, with a good build quality. The GE-7 proved really effective at the task. Basically I use it only to make my tone sit nicely in the mix on rehearsals or gigs. I don't use it at home, because what I'm trying to do is to sound as good as home in a band context. I don't use it to create special sounds or to make my amp sound like another one, though it can certainly do that. I would strongly recommend this unit to any guitarist playing in a band, especially if there are other midrange focused instruments. What works for me is: cut off 100HZ, slightly cut 200HZ, slightly boost 400HZ, slightly cut 800HZ, slightly boost 1KHZ, 3.2KHZ at unity or slightly below, 6,4HZ is basically the presence, so I adjust it depending on the amp and the context. I bought mine to use with my fender telecaster standard usa. I felt the guitar needed some more low end and high tones trimming. And when this pedal came in it did exactly that with top grades. There really isn't much to it, you just plug it in, set the equalizer to a desired level and that's it. I like that it's simple. What i dont like is that these meters are extremely sensitive. You need to move the knob for like a smallest amount possible and the result is already very noticeable, so in some cases its quiet difficult to find and then keep this setting, especially if you use it for live shows. Just a touch of some cables on top of an eq can change its character drastically, so i advise some caution and second check after transporting it. Other than that, this pedal works superbly, and i cant play without it. A common complaint seems to be that this pedal adds noise to your signal. The more effective way to use this pedal is to CUT the frequencies that you don't want, and then use the level slider to compensate if you feel like that leaves a noticeable drop in overall volume. If you have a humbucker that is too muddy, cut some of the low frequencies. If you have a single coil that is too harsh, roll off the 3.2k and a little of the 6.4k. HOWEVER, I must say the service Owners Manual provides was fast and efficient by being available online. The manual was in good readable condition and easily downloaded. The LED doesn't come on when the effect is on (The actual EQ'ing of audio seems to work ok). The LED works fine in isolation but not in the GE-7 circuit. Most Boss pedals use a JFET switching arrangement and here is the GE-7 circuit itself. Is there something straight forward I can check next? (I've remove the LED for the moment and tested it with 9v and a 330 ohm resistor. Works fine) Links: YouTube Are you using a wall wart or battery. Is at an older boss pedal that has the aca adaptor only sticker? DM So try a LED with a large mCd (milli-candella) rating. Check the value of (series DC supply resistor) R1 - if it is 470 ohm, you can change it to any value from 22 to 47 ohm, and it should then run properly from a 9vDC plugpack. If the value of R1 is already less than 100 ohm, then you probably have a different problem. Maybe someone has replaced the LED but got the legs around the wrong way. Try soldering the LED to the board with the legs reversed. Try soldering the LED to the board with the legs reversed. No, the voltage across the LED is consistent with it being in the right way around (it's drawing current), and the series zener being okay (3.6 volts looks okay and makes sense). If R10 really is 3k9, and we need at least 10mA through a normal LED, there would have to be 39 volts across it, plus another 5 volts for the LED and zener, and the circuit shows a 9 volts battery, so I don't think they intended for this to be run from 40-something volts. It may not be the right circuit, but for the device it is the circuit for, the LED must be a high-intensity type. The voltage drops across the zener, LED and current limiting resistor are indeed consistent with the LED being in circuit the right way around. The Boss service manual for the GE-7 specifies a GL-3PR2 high output 3mm red LED, 5.6v zener D4 and 3.9k series resistor R10, so the LED certainly must be able to produce a good brightness from tiny currents. The forward drop that fret measured across the LED looks a little high at 2.4vDC - the Boss GL-3PR2 LEDs usually measure around 1.8vDC - which suggests that it's a replacement, and not a high-intensity type, as you pointed out.That would also be a clue that the circuit was originally designed for the ACA 12v adaptor, so the 470 ohm resistor R1 would be the next suspect. There seems to be a solid 8.8v on the main voltage bus. There is about 5v over the LED attachment pins with the pedal on. Which is more than the 2.4v I was getting with the adapter. So it seems a mod to 9v supply is in order. However the links you supplied don't directly map to the GE-7. I'm getting very different voltage readings across the main voltage bus with the battery in there rather than the adapter, and I haven't got my head around it yet. Off to work with me for the moment. Links: YouTube If we are kind to Boss and don't assume this was a techo-trick to tie Boss users to Boss plugpacks, then the resistor will provide additional filtering when the mains supply is used. Might be worth, say, reducing the 470r to something like 100r and see if you can't have both correct operation and some filtering. Once there I quickly found the diode and resistor, yanked them from the circuit and jumpered the wires. And now it works fine off the 9v supply that I use. Yay! Well at least until the mod kit arrives Links: YouTube I got asked to fix an MXR EQ, the EQ Sliders didnt light up anymore. So without even bothering looking for the problem i just drilled a hole in the very corner and added an LED with a resistor and powered it straight of the board where the DC jack was and to the switch.
