Like many players, a Boss DS-1 was the first distortion I bought. If only Mike was modding gear back then!!! A very big thank you to all at AnalogMan John Was this review helpful to you? This is my first pedal from mike. I am ready to buy from from Analogman. The shipping was very fast and the customer service was top notch. Was this review helpful to you? Even better in fact. The pedal has a warm beating heart now. I suspect the sustain is also richer than before, which is incredible. I appreciate you working on this and sending it back so promptly. Was this review helpful to you? Wanted to try this (modding) route to get the quality and great sounds. Frankly the Pro mod is all I needed. It does exactly what I need which is boost signal without distortion when the gain is rolled off. Sounds a bit different than the other pedal which is an adjustment though it's in the ballpark and I swear I love it more and more everytime I play it. The midrange mod is great for versatility though I prefer using the tone knob for mix. This is a great pedal now and I am appeciative to the folks at Analogman. Thank you. Was this review helpful to you?GFENERGIES.COM/images/boss-ds1-distortion-pedal-manual.pdf It took bit of tweaking to sit just right with the rest of my rig, but once I found the sweet range, I have absolutely enjoyed it. The mid-control knob is a blessing. In particular, with bridge humbuckers I find the tone to be just the right blend of aggressive and expressive, smooth and chunky. And even with substantial gain, it is respectably quiet. I use a stereo set up, British voiced on one side and US on the other. The end result when using this pedal, especially when the tubes are pushed a bit, is gigantic. Well done!! Was this review helpful to you. Instead of toneless, fuzzy distortion, the DS-1 faithfully reproduces all the subtle nuances of playing dynamics--at any volume. Retrieved 20 April 2016. Hal Leonard Corporation. p. 187. Robert Keeley graciously shared his Seeing Eye and Ultra mods with the public. This kit will provide you with all of the components (high quality Panasonic and Multicomp caps and metal film resistors) you need to mod your DS-1 to Keeley's specs. The improvement in the sound, particularly the bass response, of this pedal after the mod is well worth it. See the video provided for a side by side (link below). This is a fun and inexpensive way to get started modding pedals. All you provide are the basic soldering tools. The kit comes with all necessary components. Please note that this kit does not include the pedal itself. I will not be held responsible if you ruin your pedal (also, no returns on mod kits). Mark H. 5.0 out of 5 stars Quick shipping from California. Installed the kit following the instructions found on “Instructables.com” in about three hours, put the DS-1 pedal back together and it works great. If you attempt the mod, read the instructions about five times to make sure you are doing it right because it some cases you must follow the correct polarity for diodes and LED’s and you must get the correct components it the right place the first time. It was really fun.The Panasonic caps, metal film resisters, the LEDS, the diodes, the wiring, the YouTube video, the link to all the instructions are all killer, straight forward, and upfront pretty easy to accomplish. After doing a few of these mods to my Boss DS1-s they became my favorite pedals. DS1 is certainly good tip for fans of a harder pace. With level, distortion and tone controls one can naturally create tamer sounds. PROs: I wanted something simple and versatile, to be able to play blues and classic rock and some occasional heavy metal (maybe even thrash metal). The pedal does the job for me and I highly recommend it for this purpose. It has passed the test of time and is backed by many famous players: Steve Vai, Kurt Cobain, Gary Moore. You can also find a lot of settings and mods available. CONs: Not sure if my high-output humbuckers are to blame (and also a lot of other reviews mention it), but at high tone, there is a lot of buzz - than can be used in some genres, but not useful when you want a mild distortion or a slight overdrive. But there are better pedals for that. Conclusion? Buy it, try it, learn to use it. It's a good basis to start for every player.www.gametimecatering.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626eac97d5a1d---bosch-maxx-6-washing-machine-service-manual.pdf Send report Total features sound quality handling Does the job very good. It can make very awesome sounds Ferre11, 03.03.2020 i have been using the boss ds-1 pedal for a while now. First of I used it like a real heavy distortion pedal and now i use it just to kinda boost my amp with a bit of distortion. It just works great for the low price of the pedal.Send report Total features sound quality handling Brilliant for 90s grunge 26.04.2016 Use: I use this pedal going straight into my Marshall dsl40c tube amp. Send report Total features sound quality handling Very good for the price 25.10.2014 Well to begin this pedal is a classic. Considering that is used by many professionals I am surprised that it is still so cheap unlike the Ibanez tube screamer for instance. The controls are similar to a tube screamer but the sound is very different in my opinion. I have managed to get very good tones for soloing straight away. The distortion knob is very very responsive. With the tone knob and a bit of eq from your amp you can get a wide range of distortions suitable for many genres. What I am very pleasantly surprised about is how good it works in conjunction with other distortion pedals and even the boost channel from my amp. You can play around a bit and get some interesting tones using two distortion pedals at once, or the ds-1 going through the dirty channel. You have to be careful with the amount of distortion coming from each source or it can sound very broken and lose all consistency. Also the construction is very solid, like all Boss pedals made to last forever. All an all a good distortion pedal especially for rock in my opinion. I would recommend it. Introduced in 1978, BOSS’s first distortion pedal defined a bold new sound, delivering hard-edged attack and smooth sustain that’s been a staple of players for generations.http://www.psstrecno.sk/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626eaca62295e---bosch-maxx-6-user-manual.pdf The DS-1 is the top-selling BOSS compact pedal ever, and its original, unchanged design continues to inspire the creation of great music everywhere. The classic DS-1 tone is behind the signature sounds of numerous rock legends, and is ready to fuel your own signature sound today. It was the first distortion pedal made by Boss with a distinctive hard-clipping sound perfect for high gain rock and metal still keeping the character of the original guitar. This analysis is focused in the latest pedal schematic revision which is easy to find and prone to modifications. Made in Japan, with a distinguishable silver screw. In terms of sound, it gives the warmest distortion, offering glints of grittiness and smoothness at the same time. This first model had some inconveniences like momentary LED and the need for an external power supply. The previous TA7136AP integrated circuit was at the end of its stock life, so the whole circuit design was modified (re-labeled as “DS1-A”) to accommodate a standard easy to find and replace dual op-amp. This model is not very loud with a transparent drive. It is versatile; almost clean at lower gain setting with a serious edge at high gain (slight hiss is noticeable at higher gain settings). From now on, all the models are commonly called post '94. It is the loudest among all the models, at higher gain settings the distortion is fizzy (poorly made fuzz) with some noise.Cheap, easy to find and perfect for mods. The transistor booster will pre-amplify the signal and all the distortion is produced using a variable op-amp gain circuit with diodes shorting the output to ground, producing hard clipping. This distortion stage is followed by a passive tone filter and level control. The Power Supply provides energy and bias points to all the circuit. The idea is simple: it can activate the effect routing the signal through the circuit or deactivate it, bypassing the pedal core BUT keeping the input and output buffers always in the signal path.www.china-vitai.com/userfiles/files/contech-scarecrow-user-manual.pdf A 3PDT switch ( Triple Pole Double Throw) will also allow you to light a power-on LED at the same time, which is pretty convenient. The 3PDT drives the guitar signal either through the effect circuitry, or straight input-to-output, the guitar signal does not even touch the input of the effect. All the potentiometers, jacks and battery are wired and hand soldered which is quite labor intensive. This remained unchanged for about 16 years. The idea is to raise the signal levels so the next stage can work with acceptable levels although as we can see later, the signal is maybe too boosted after this stage. This gain will create a clipping that looking at the image below is asymmetric (cycles have a slightly different duration) and has a soft knee or soft clipping: Therefore D8 has nothing to do with asymmetrical clipping or any kind of guitar signal modification. Read the last page of the M5223A datasheet for more information. It buffers interfaces the previous Transistor Booster stage with the second half of the op-amp that will do all the magic. It controls it by allowing highs through the feedback loop. Bass notes are less clipped, so the distortion is frequency selective (similar to what happens in the Tube Screamer, but in that case, the freq limit is 720 instead of 72Hz). The cap C7 will also reduce harmonics at very high frequencies, softening a bit the distortion and reducing oscillation problems. When either D4 or D5 are conducting, the impedance at R14 - C10 junction is greatly reduced. This is a non-linear circuit, the best way to analyze the behavior is in the time-domain, as is shown in the figure in 6.1. section. This equalization enhance the bass and treble of the signal and is used in hard rock, other pedals like the Tube Screamer have a completely different approach boosting the mids creating a mid-hump. The purpose of this filter is just to remove the DC levels from the final output signal. These are the key elements: Modders will unbalance the D4-D5 network to make their clipping even more asymmetric. This transistor overdrives the signal from the early stages of the pedal and will condition the behavior of the whole effect. The emitter feedback reduces the distortion. Both the emitter feedback and the lower collector current decrease Q2's voltage gain, which lessens the effect of the negative feedback through R7 and C4. By lessening the effect of R7 and C4, the low-freq cutoff from C3 is moved down and the high-freq cutoff from C4 is moved up.In most cases, the electronic design of a good sounding pedal is a mix of luck, engineering, and black magic.
