Its been my experience that most of the people that work at guitar center are useless. So, always research and get information from multiple sources. The DS-1 is actually used by many artists including Joe Satriani, Kurt Cobain, John Petrucci, and Steve Vai to name a few, BUT most of the big artists don't use the stock one. Why? Cuz it sucks! The good news is this pedal is simple enough to modify!! In this instructable I will show you step by step, with lots of pictures, how to perform Robert Keeley's DS-ULTRA Mod. I reuse the one I replace with the blue one. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 2: Disassembly When taking things apart there are some basic rules. 1. Don't force it- Be patient, take your time, and assess the situation. 2. Don't lose it- Keep track of everything you remove. This include screw, covers, removed capacitors, resistors, ect. 3. Don't forget it- Its always a good idea to document how the thing fits together; draw diagrams, record video, take pictures. Better safe than sorry. Always remove the power source when working on anything electronic. To move it out of the way take you thumb nail and lift the bottom then gently pull the power power jack back and out of its slot. You should now see the screw. Remove it. 6.http://ntg-holdings.com/pic/boss-bx-16-mixer-manual.xml Now you need to desolder the purple and black leads for the power switch from the board. Before you even pick up the iron watch these two videos on how to solder and desolder properly. Even if you've been doing this for a while. These are some good videos. 7. Just gently push the jacks, pots, and the LED in and remove the circuit board. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 4: Remove Old Components Don't throw anything away we WILL need some things later. You need to desolder. C1, C3, C5, C11, C12, C13 - These are silver polyester film capacitors. C2, C8, C9, C14 - These are round electrolytic capacitors (the new ones will be non-polar). R13, R14, R39- These are resistors. C7- This is a ceramic disc capacitor. D5 - This is diode. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 5: New Components Pt.1 This is the easiest part of this entire project. Its just pug n' chug. It will make the next step easier. 5. Place 0.1uF capacitors in C1, C3, C5, C12, C13 6. Place a 0.047uF capacitor in C11 7. Place a 220pf capacitor in C7 Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 6: New Components Pt.2 This is where it gets a little complicated. I've made a model to help you wrap your head around the concept. 1. To perform the Seeing Eye mod, you have to connect a 3mm red LED to D5 as shown. We will later mount this in the 'o' of tone. 2. For the Ultra mod you switch in another LED in series with D4 as shown. This LED will be on the inside and wont be seen. Follow the diagram. This is where you will most likely make a mistake if you are not careful. DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING!! If you wire it all up and the LED appears dim and you just put a new battery in it, You most likely put an LED or the orange diode in the wrong way. Make sure to leave enough wire to mount the LED and switch. For the Ultra Mod you need to desolder D4 and solder a jumper to the switch as shown. Don't forget the orientation of the Diode.http://www.bosport.be/newsletter/bosch-hot-water-system-manual Once all of you wires leading out of A,B,C, and D on the diagram are are soldered to the board, solder 1.0 uF capacitor into C9. Last thing is to solder the 47pf cap across the back of D5 and D4 as shown. This is where you'll mount the D5 LED. Then drill a hole for your toggle switch. Look back at the disassembly picture if your not sure how things go together. Then feed the wires for the stomp switch through the pedal and resolder the purple wire to 17 and the black wire to 13. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 8: Last Thoughts About five years ago Robert Keeley was kind enough to publish how to do this modification on his website. This is a great mod that drastically improves the tone of this pedal. Also Overdrive Spider has had his How To up for a while. Check out his DS-1 Circuit Bends I like letter D the best. Recommendations Build a Pocket RGB LED Light for Your Home Photo Studio It turns on, but the Tone and Level don't work, neither does the All Seeing Eye, nor the Ultra Mode Switch. Think I put those two in backwards or should I look elsewhere? Thank you. Tomm I'd recommend checking there. 0 joshcory79 Question I was able to find it in one of your pictures, but C11 doesn't seem to be labeled in your diagrams. Also, the 47pF cap across D4 and D5 doesn't seem to be shown unless I'm misreading something. 0 AaronS1 It's a LOT smaller than the old boards. I was wanting to do the D4 D5 mod, but, I'm not sure if it'll be the same since the board is different. 0 DenVeR777 This is very useful instruction. But I've got a problem: Dist knob at low values work perfectly, but when I rise dist value to 12h low level signal dissapear and it's treshold rise with dist level. Another thing is there about 3,5-7v dc on a input jack, its also depend from dist level. Can anyone tells what i do wrong. Sorry for my english.http://connect-log.com/images/boss-ds-1-user-manual.pdf At max distortion it will only work if the guitar is played really hard. Soft notes don't go through at all. I returned the Diodes to the originals, leaving everything the same and it still acts the same. Any hints? Any help would be very appreciative. Thanks! 0 RafiS7 Andrew Gartshore And encoutered the same issue - distortion above 2 o'clock makes the pedal work like sort of noise suspencer. So. when three or four people have exactly the same problem after following the instructions then there must be something wrong with the instruction I guess. If anyone solved this problem - please drop me a line. 0 JeppyMod Andrew Gartshore I stricktly follow the instructions and have the same strange behaviors with volume and distorsion knobs after modifications. Thanks! 0 JeppyMod JeppyMod I really followed the instructions step by step. I can't believe that only 3 of us have the same behaviour. Thanks 0 BrMr JeppyMod I have exact same problem. Please help 0 LucasA106 I followed every step and i think i did them all correctly. I wasn't able to find an AWG 24 hook up wire so i used an ordinary copper wire of similar gauge. Any ideas on how to solve this issue. Thanks 0 ScottF80 A couple of things that made it easier for me. 1)solder the red LED directly to the pcb at D5. Solder the second LED directly to the switch (bend at right angle and solder it to the switch, insulate the leads.) Came out Great! 0 Logan302 Great ible for Boss DS-1 users 0 lectricity Thank you for all. 0 GooveTankPro I found (somehow) that running a wire from the sleeve post of the output jack to the positive side of the main blue LED gets rid of the hum and allows audio to pass through while the pedal is turned on, but the ground hum is still there when I turn the pedal off. Clearly I did something wrong, any solutions or ideas? 0 Mutatedmexican Love it! Thank you. 0 Surgegainsboard. It is instantly recognisable pedal used by everyone from beginners to absolute professionals.http://mfplus.ba/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626ea7d20cbe7---bosch-manuals-power-tools.pdf The Boss DS-1 is still to this day relied upon by guitarists in need of a versatile pedal that can provide smooth, creamy crunch, hard edge distortion and everything in between, all with low noise. This has fuelled the signature sounds of guitar legends all over the world and is still an extremely popular pedal in the music world. So today we’re going to look at why this pedal has enjoyed such popularity and stood the test of time, going on to become one of the most well-known effects pedals ever made and the highest selling BOSS pedal to date. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BOSS DS-1 DISTORTION PEDAL When it was first introduced back in 1978, the Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal would become Boss’s first foray into the world of distortion pedals, instantly defining a new sound that provided players with hard edged attack and smooth sustain that guitarists of all genres fell in love with. Aside from the small DS-1 logo being moved slightly when production moved from Japan to Taiwan, the overall Boss DS-1 design is unchanged, with its signature sound still intact. Before this pedal exploded onto the scene, most distortion pedals were known for producing harsh, muddy tones especially when driven into high gain saturation. However, the engineers at Boss changed all that when they developed the unique DS-1 circuit complete with a pioneering two-stage circuit. This two-stage circuit incorporated both op-amp and transistor gain stages resulting in a signature low-frequency fullness loved by punk, rock and metal players. The fact you could crank the distortion knob to achieve everything from a mild boost in distortion that would drive your amp all the way to full throttle no-holds-barred gain made it an appealing option for those who loved to bust out the big riffs. However, we’re willing to wage that you have an album in your collection that has this pedal on due to the fact it’s such a ubiquitous presence in the music scene.www.easyhairstyler.com/tmp/phphjHbhN' to '/home/www/happyhair/easyhairstyler.com/htdocs/www/img/files/conroe1333-d667-user-manual.pdf The Boss DS-1 has some really famous users and as we said, has been used on a myriad of different records that might surprise you. According to an interview in Guitarworld.com producer Butch Vig was known for preferring to get his distortion sound directly from the cranked amps, but as Kurt Cobain did feel that the DS-1 was the main factor in his tone, he made special exception. Take a look below at some of the most famous Boss DS-1 users all spanning a wide range of different genres and styles: In addition, the DS-2 includes a built-in Remote jack which allows you to switch between modes via an external footswitch. This meant you could go from loud to louder and then even louder again should you need to. The major difference between this and the original DS-1 is that this is a digital pedal designed to process your playing in real time and adapt its distortion tones based on how you were playing. If you played harder, the pedal would respond, if you played a little softer the pedal would change to suit your dynamics. In addition, you have a wider range of EQ settings to play with! However, it was in 2017 that the team at Boss would reissue a special edition version of the Boss DS-1 and really set the collectors out there into a frenzy. The Boss DS-1-4A was a limited-edition pedal commemorating 40 years of boss innovation and to celebrate 40 years of the DS-1. This now sold-out pedal had exactly the same sound as the original DS-1 pedals but featured a black body with gold lettering, gold-capped knobs, and a vintage silver thumbscrew for the battery compartment as well as a special box with 40th anniversary logo. The Boss DS-1-4A was a limited edition 40th anniversary edition of the DS-1, and if you have one, you're pretty lucky.Straight out of the box you get amazing sounding distortion that is tight, focused and provides huge distortion with minimal noise.http://victorylimo1.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626ea7dc74bfe---bosch-manuals-nz.pdf The rich harmonics of the pedal work in unison with the characteristics of your guitar bringing out the best sound possible without taking anything away from your sound. You can use the pedal as a subtle tone or volume boost by dialling the distortion back, or crank it right up for some seriously bone crunching riffs. One of the best things about the DS-1 is the fact you can use it for a wide range of different genres as it can provide super smooth growls, harsh Grunge tones to high gain Southern Rock all at the twist of a dial. 2. IT’S NO FUSS AND EASY TO USE The easy to use controls allow you to dial in your perfect tone within seconds. You have a Tone, Level and a DIST (distortion) knob and that’s it - easy. This is extremely useful if you’re a guitarist who (like me) tends to stomp on your pedals quite hard. In addition, the Boss DS-1 is almost indestructible thanks to the sturdy metal chassis which protects the inner workings of the pedal. The battery compartment has also been designed to protect the circuit board should you forget to take it out the battery after a couple of years (it happens!) and it accidentally leaks. In conclusion the Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal provides players with a no-fuss, hard wearing distortion pedal that sounds spectacular. When you’re looking for a distortion pedal, the Boss DS-1 is easily a contender for one of the best distortion pedals of all time. Robert Keeley graciously shared his Seeing Eye and Ultra mods with the public. This kit will provide you with all of the components (high quality Panasonic and Multicomp caps and metal film resistors) you need to mod your DS-1 to Keeley's specs. The improvement in the sound, particularly the bass response, of this pedal after the mod is well worth it. See the video provided for a side by side (link below). This is a fun and inexpensive way to get started modding pedals. All you provide are the basic soldering tools. The kit comes with all necessary components. Please note that this kit does not include the pedal itself. I will not be held responsible if you ruin your pedal (also, no returns on mod kits). Basic electronics knowledge and soldering skills are required. I will email you a link to James Haskins' instructions (instructables), of which I have obtained permission from him to share. Mark H. 5.0 out of 5 stars Quick shipping from California. Installed the kit following the instructions found on “Instructables.com” in about three hours, put the DS-1 pedal back together and it works great.www.e-mogilev.com/uploads/files/conroe1333-d667-r3_0-manual.pdf If you attempt the mod, read the instructions about five times to make sure you are doing it right because it some cases you must follow the correct polarity for diodes and LED’s and you must get the correct components it the right place the first time. It was really fun.The Panasonic caps, metal film resisters, the LEDS, the diodes, the wiring, the YouTube video, the link to all the instructions are all killer, straight forward, and upfront pretty easy to accomplish. After doing a few of these mods to my Boss DS1-s they became my favorite pedals. Thanks to Maxwell Audio Designs components for doing a great job. Something went wrong. To provide the musicians with an option to control the desired aspects of their instrument's tone, this Stompbox unit is equipped with the following controls: e.level knob, EQ knob, rate knob, depth knob. The CH1 works well, I am still learning how to get the right sounds for various songs. In all respects It is exactly what I wanted despite the fact that it is well made. Having used other combination effects pedals in the past I can honestly say this pedal being a single effect allows me greater control and its through put to the amplifier gives me a crisp clean sound that allows the full character of my guitar to come through. If you are simply after a chorus effects pedal, I highly recommend you buy one of these.Cancel Thanks, we'll look into this. All Rights Reserved. Dr feelgood 4.0 out of 5 stars I have quite an indepth pedal board, so thought it might have been lack of current - changed batteries, ran it solo in the loop. Nope. So did it straight in, only pedal - still didnt work. Ive heard amazing stuff about this pedal, so was kinda crestfallen - i like to think i just got a dud, but with the money spent, was not worth it. Oh well.I have a super beautiful paperweight, so that's cool.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Sorry, we failed to record your vote. With the distortion knob on almost zero it adds the final layer to a already over driving Marshall.
