The built in presets are very good for jamming. I would recommend the addition of two foot pedals which give you the ability to start and stop the the DR3 and also move to the next pattern in the preset.If you are a guitar player the pedals are essential. You need to read the manual carefully to make your own patterns. It is not rocket science but needs to be read through carefully.If you have trouble programming the video,then stick to the preset patterns. The bass lines in the preset patterns are generally played in E,A or C, but can be changed to any other key.You can of course make up your own bass lines or drum rhythms using the key pads. The drum sounds are very realistic,particularly when played through an amplifier or through headphones. I would highly recommend this product.But playing on your own can get a little dreary. It not only has 99 pre-recorded drum rhythms which can be speeded up or slowed down, but each is accompanied by a bass line which can be varied by key. It has the facility to record up to 99 complete song backings, derived either from the pre-recorded rhythms or completely from scratch. There are lots of background beats to play with including basic 12 bar blues and you can just repeat a section of the beat to play along with a single beat. This machine is more difficult to program than any other machine I've used. The logic is much different than the others, and it seems that to perform basic or common functions (like copying a pre-set pattern), you must go through an inordinately large number of steps. I give it 4 stars because of the good drum sounds and the number of functions it can perform, but I'm being generous - the presets are just about useless as they are (too much over-playing), and the bass sound in all the pre-sets is a corny synthesized 'slap bass' sound (think of the 'Seinfeld' theme). For example, not just a compressor and EQ, but a multiband compressor. This has led me to believe I should delve deeper and give it a chance to prove it self. I usually program and store my songs via midi bulk dump for solo performance, This machine does not provide for that but it can be a slave midi module for a seqencer. Also, I think it could be useful as a variation of style- sound. It is voiced differently than my other units. Would I use it to replace the drummer in the band, not unless he didn't show up. As part of a solo act. I'm working on the practicality of that right now. My Conclusions. This is a glorified Boss Dr-5 rhythm composer. The patterns are located in Styles. When writing a pattern you decide where it will be used, Intro, fill, verse A, Fill B, etc.You can edit Drum kits, instruments within kits, type of Bass, Mute the instruments of choice, pan output, and a lot more, If you have the patience and time. Also how well thought out your goal, or arrangement of the song is. I have the Zoom RT223, and Boss DR5. The Zoom does have better sounds than the Boss Dr5 but can not compete in certain areas. It is a matter of the ability to read, remember and execute what has been read in the manual. The good news, though. They are cheaper to come by because of that. I chose the DR3 over the SR-16 for a rather superficial reason- its list price is more expensive, so I figured it was better. While it doesn't look as cool as the Alesis, this drum machine certainly isn't lacking on function. No, it ain't as versatile as your run-of-the-mill pirated drum looping software, but what it lacks in versatility it makes up for in fun (and really, the sounds of the drums on this machine should suffice for most people, unless you need a very specific sound like a porkchop smacking the sidewalk or something). By fun I mean learning the old school way of programming electric drums by tapping the keys with your fingers on an actual drum machine. While the slap-esque bass is a little silly, there are plenty of other bass noises you can make the machine produce. Better yet, just turn the bass off (it's limited to 12 notes, anyway). What do I not like? Aesthetics, probably. I prefer the look of the big buttons for tapping on the SR-16. Also, the plastic casing just feels a little.toy like. I only say that because it's made from the same style plastic as a lot of inventions in the early 2000's- namely the Gameboy Advance SP or Nintendo DS. I suppose I have bias there. OK, I'm definitely biased now. A common criticism is the difficulty of programming it. I disagree- I find it quite simple and user-intuitive once you get the hang of it. It's incredibly easy to use this crazy new site called Google if you can't figure something out from the manual. I like many of the presets, and I love the three-verse-three-fills variety of the machine. That's something the SR-16 can't do. As well, it can actually fit 100 user programmings (unlike Alesis's 50 programmings). This is a great, simple drum machine for the one man band kind of people out there that really want some drums to jam with. While no machine will ever replace an actual quality drummer, it's still very fun to have. And it's made by Roland, so you know its got to be a little good. 808, anyone? And hey, if you're reading this because you actually want a drum machine, right on.
