I'm currently using the ones on my Yamaha PSR550's auto-accompaniment section,but they are just not punchy enough. Also, if I recorded the drums from the 550 to Cakewalk(midi sequence), would they playback on any of the newer Boss JS-5, DR670, DR770 machines or would I have to edit the sequence heavily. I just like to use the Yamaha to create mainly backing tracks when I compose. I am a guitar player, so all this midi editing stuff is too time consuming and alot of it over my head. So.any ideas short of samples? TIA PEACE. There's good punch on the kicks, good snap on snares (and the 808 crap snare's in the 550), and the toms sound good. Cymbols are pretty good, Even usable, for the price range. A midi track in cake will play back any machine.You should be able to use any machine to create rock, as long as you can adjust the sounds the way you like them.You might be able to use the machine you have, just try an EQ or cheap effects unit on it.The song should be 3 measures of B11 then B12. This deleted the second measure, the song is now B11, B11,B12. While on measure 2, Hold shift and press small number button 1 (insert) AND while still holding the shift button, use the small numbered buttons to type in 13. (you could also press the bank button to change to A13) AND while still holding the shift button press ACC. The song is now B11, B13, B11 and B12. Multiple Tempo's This feature is as impractical as using odd meter in paterns and eats your song memory right up. There are lots of background beats to play with including basic 12 bar blues and you can just repeat a section of the beat to play along with a single beat. You can adjust the beat tempo faster or slower. I haven't gotten into designing custom songs yet but it appears pretty straight forward if you read the directions. Your DR-3 mates never make a mistake and don't argue with you either. For learning to keep time it is invaluable and so much more fun than a Metronome.This is extremely difficult. I give it 4 stars because of the good drum sounds and the number of functions it can perform, but I'm being generous - the presets are just about useless as they are (too much over-playing), and the bass sound in all the pre-sets is a corny synthesized 'slap bass' sound (think of the 'Seinfeld' theme). I want to sell it.I recently purchased the video manual for this have discovered it has more functions than I first thought. For example, not just a compressor and EQ, but a multiband compressor. This has led me to believe I should delve deeper and give it a chance to prove it self. I usually program and store my songs via midi bulk dump for solo performance, This machine does not provide for that but it can be a slave midi module for a seqencer. It does have a facility for a bass line to be added but as yet I have not found it of any benefit to me. In fact, the DR-220 had been so limited in its capacity to store samples, that two separate models were produced: one loaded with an acoustic kit (DR-220A), and the other with an electronic (DR-220E). But looking back, it did have some pretty arresting compromises. Whilst the sounds were sampled and reproduced at good quality, I found the realism of acoustic drummer simulation was relatively poor. This was down to the implementation of the unit’s sequencing, control, etc, which, unless you were a virtual genius, produced a stilted and mechanical result. Basic patterns comprised sixteen rigidly-timed beats, meaning there was no way to simulate a “human timing feel”. For fills, it was possible to enter 32nd notes or triplets, or vary the timbre (by multi-padding), but overall editing was clumsy, slow and often frustrating. With no velocity sensitivity, establishing a sense of dynamics was also pretty convoluted. There was an Accent feature which could increase the volume of a hit by a preset amount. Being clever with Accents meant you could produce a bit more dynamic variation, but beyond that, you were into duplicating the same sound across multiple pads and assigning a different volume level to each duplicate. A typical approach would be to dedicate a whole bank to snare sounds, with each pad carrying the same sample, but different volume or timbre characteristics. But even with all of the above stops pulled out, there was still a mechanical aura to the DR-550. And whilst the sounds were completely usable and well defined, I never felt there were any real show-stoppers in there. Of course, this was a cheapish product of its time, and it was much, much better value than the DR-220, but if you’re looking at a DR-550 today, you’re unlikely to be bowled over by it. The Mk.II version of the DR-550 was little different from the original. The only significant upgrade I’m aware of was an increase in the number of samples from 48 to 91. That’s really not the case with the DR-550. But it should be stressed that the DR-660 was more than double the price of the DR-550, and was a departure from previous Dr. Rhythms in its wealth of features and professional-sounding tone. It might seem that the DR-550 has more of a kinship with the DR-660 than the DR-220. You still get a very ’80s personality with a mechanical feel you just can’t do anything about. This, however, didn’t stop the Boss DR-550 rocketing to the top of the UK bestsellers chart (Making Music dealer survey) in spring 1990, beating the Roland R-5, the Yamaha RX8, the Roland TR-505 and the Alesis HR-16 into the next five respective positions.
