Once you get a hang of it, it's a great and intuitive pedal.http://www.caribbeandentist.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626e5b208ca19---43-vortec-service-manual.pdf There is already a fantastic DD-500 thread here, with people much more knowledgeable than myself within. I'm just going to hit on a handful of tips that I would have liked to know heading in. I haven't used the MIDI, expression pedal, looper, or editor features (though I really should), so maybe someone else with more experience could speak to some of those basics. With all of that said, here we go. OUT OF THE BOX Although you can dive deep, the DD-500 is superficially simple. Start with the knobs. The time, feedback, effect level, tone, and mod depth knobs all work like any other delay pedal, and they can be used at any time. The mode knob allows you to select which of the 12 basic delay engines you want to work with. Just sticking to the knobs is a great way to get started and get a feel for the basic sound palette. PATCHES AND BANKS A patch is a specific group of delay settings that can be saved as a preset. Patches are stored within banks. The DD-500 has 99 banks. Out of the box, it is configured to have two patches per bank, resulting in 198 total saveable patches. If you want, you can make all three switches remember patches, meaning that you can have a total of 297 saveable patches. You can move down a bank by pressing the A and B switches simultaneously. The default display will include the location of the patch. As such, stock banks 1-30 are identical to stock banks 31-60 and also banks 61-90. People have mixed feelings about the stock presets but I wanted to keep them, and so this repetition was very handy (see next section). REORGANIZING YOUR DD-500 The stock presets are organized in a random, shuffled fashion. Fortunately, I was not alone. When messing around aimlessly with Boss' presets, I find this organization much more satisfying. But wait, how do you move a patch from one location to another. It's easy, here's how. If you are following the document from the previous section, there is no need to rename the stock factory patches (unless you want to).http://www.thelawchamber.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626e5b304443b---43-vortec-repair-manual.pdf It's a bit of a laborious process, but well worthwhile. MAKING YOUR OWN PATCHES Here is where the DD-500 gets crazy. If you've followed all of the above steps, you now have the factory presets safely saved and organized in banks 30-59. All the rest of the banks are now waiting for your brilliance. The DD-500's power lies in its patch-creating capabilities. Start turning knobs to find something you like. Then press the edit button to enter the edit menu. Press the edit button again to enter the patch menu. Within the patch menu, you can access a ton of settings options. Tweak a value, strum and listen, then tweak again. Also, there is a great collection of emulations and unique sounds here: When you have something you like, save it using the steps explained above. THE CONTROL AND ASSIGN FUNCTIONS OK, I lied before, THIS is where the DD-500 gets really crazy. I mentioned earlier that I prefer only having two patches per bank, rather than three. When you are on the default display screen, press the edit button to get into the edit screen. Move down to control, and press edit again to get into the control screen. Going into all the possibilities in this section would take a lifetime, so just experiment. I've played with this pedal a lot, and still feel like I'm just scratching its surface. If other TGPers have advice for new DD-500 owners, please chime in! Thanks for taking the time to do this.it will be very helpful! That usually gets me going in the right direction. Thanks for taking the time to do this.it will be very helpful!I hope you go for it! Im looking forward to using Assigns on the RV-500. My favorite things to do on the DD500 are: 1. Set the Assign to control the Feedback. Control it with the Crtl Switch set to Momentary. Min Feedback set to 50 or 60 for some moderate delay, Then set the Max to 95-100 so when I hold the Ctl switch down I get an eruption of repeats. 2. Set the Modulation speed and depth (using 2 assigns) to be controlled by the input volume.http://basumati.com/app/webroot/ckfinder/userfiles/files/canon-mg5300-series-on-screen-manual.pdf Playing quiet I get subtle slow mod, Start hitting the strings or kick in a drive and I get Loud Choppy pitch modulation. This doesn't work as well with a compressor for obvious reasons. 3. Set my delay for a high feedback high effect level for ambient noise, then assign the ctl switch to toggle both of those levels back quite a bit, so when my solo kick in I just have to hit the button for a less intense delay. I could use a second patch but this is a lot smoother sounding, plus it keeps my tap tempo and repeats intact. 4. One song I use the same delay the whole song, but for 1 part I want dotted eights instead of quarters. Easy. Assign the ctl switch to toggle the note value. I do the same thing on another song but switch it to whole notes. This is a cool effect with high feedback, when you first switch it takes the last for quarter notes and repeats them a few times. 5. The Int Pedal assign function is cool too. It can swell in from one setting to another. I use it on the SFX setting. I keep the bit and sample rate pretty high but one press of the ctl button and they fade up to make the delay crappier and crappier sounding. Make it fade out on the dry signal and up the feedback for killer lofi sound. The options are endless. Once you get a hang of it, it's a great and intuitive pedal. If other TGPers have advice for new DD-500 owners, please chime in!I will lose most of my TGP cred for choosing this over a Nemesis but I really like a display screen and don't want to rely on a cell phone. I have high hopes for the analog mode. So if they have programmed a patch and I want to over write it with my own creation, I don't have to go through and try and figure out each setting they have set, and then set that to what I want. For example, I don't want to figure out how they have EQ'd a patch. On many patches I don't even want to mess with EQ, same thing with Damping etc. So if I just start editing a patch that is already pre loaded, I waste time trying to turn off things I don't want. On mine they pre programmed patches repeat themselves 2 or 3 times. So they programmed in like 30 patch banks, then repeated those same 30 patch banks 2 more times. I have no need for duplicate patches. So being able to INIT them is important. So if they have programmed a patch and I want to over write it with my own creation, I don't have to go through and try and figure out each setting they have set, and then set that to what I want. So being able to INIT them is important.I wish they had a 'DD-20 Standard' mode, which would be the basic digital delay from, obviously, the DD-20. Count me in as someone who doesn't need all of the extra background parameters; it's cool that they're there (keeping it a pro-level piece of equipment), but some of us just want the extra presets and higher fidelity. So if they have programmed a patch and I want to over write it with my own creation, I don't have to go through and try and figure out each setting they have set, and then set that to what I want. So being able to INIT them is important. So it's easy from there to just press write, bump the patch up one, and save. Rinse and repeat. So it's easy from there to just press write, bump the patch up one, and save. Rinse and repeat. Is there any way the DD-500 can give out a tap signal. For example I want to sync up my Boss DD5 to my saved patch tempos on my Boss DD-500. Can the DD-500 take care of that for me. Like somehow coming out of the EXP and into the Tap of my DD5.
