This review looks at all the Bosch induction cooktop models available. You'll learn the differences between the Bosch models and find out what sets Bosch apart from other brands. Whether you've decided on Bosch or are still shopping around, this article will help you decide which induction cooktop to buy. Overall Quality Ratings Where Are Bosch Induction Cooktops Made. Check out our articles about induction: Advantages. Is ?Induction? Cooking Safe? Range Hoods and Induction Cooking: What You Need to Know Quick Comparison Tables of Bosch Models The main differences between the three Bosch induction cooktops are that the 500 Series is the no-frills model, the 800 Series has Auto Chef, and the Benchmark (their flagship product) has FlexInduction. Auto Chef allows the cooktop to maintain a constant temperature, while FlexInduction turns two burners into one large burner (great for griddles) or several small ones. You can read more about these differences below. NOTE: Tables may not be visible on all devices. NOTE: Model numbers: Bosch may change model numbers without significant changes to the cooktops. These are the most current model numbers. It has been building home appliances since the 1930s. Bosch has a reputation for high-end, innovative products with beautiful design. Bosch is best known by most people for its dishwashers, which are known for their quality and quietness.Overall Quality Ratings Bosch appliances rank very well for customer satisfaction. Consumer Reports gave the 500 Series Bosch cooktops a score of 98 out of 100. And other Bosch induction cooktops get consistently high consumer ratings on appliance sites (such as A. J. Madison and Yale Appliance). According to the Yale Appliance blog, Bosch is considered one of the best affordable luxury brands. Consumer Reports also did a study on overall cooktop brand reliability. They found that “no cooktop brand stood out as the most or least reliable,” with failure rates for different brands and models ranging from 3 to 8 percent--which is a small percentage overall (that is to say, even in the worst case scenario, 92 percent of induction cooktops don’t fail). Bosch electric cooktops had a failure rate of 4 percent. This figure does not represent specific models, but it gives a good overall idea of brand quality. And in 2017, as well as previous years, J. D. Power, the global research firm, gave Bosch the highest ranking in two appliance categories: cooktops and wall ovens. Where Are Bosch Induction Cooktops Made. Another big plus for us is that Bosch induction cooktops for the North American market are made in the USA. (Yes, they're a German company, but they make most of their appliances in the USA.) For all of these reasons, we enthusiastically recommend Bosch induction cooktops. Making Sense of the Options If you're confused by the options, or want more details than those in the table above, this section will help you sort everything out. Model Summary: 500, 800, and Benchmark Bosch has 3 offerings: the 500 Series, the 800 Series, and the Benchmark Series. Each is available in 30-inch and 36-inch sizes. The 800 Series and Benchmark are available with or without a steel bevel; the 500 Series is only available without a bevel. The 500 Series is bare bones, but has the same power and safety features as the 800 Series and Benchmark. How do you decide which features best meet your cooking needs and style. Read on for detailed descriptions. It’s called “flex” because you can use the flex zone as one large burner or as several small ones. For a large pan (a griddle is a perfect example), you can control the flex zone as one burner, so the entire zone heats up uniformly--no cold spots. But because the entire flex zone is made up of several small heating elements, you can also use it for many small pans simultaneously. This is not infinite--you are required to place pans in certain designated areas for best results. But it’s still really cool and extremely functional. This is great, but not as sophisticated as the flex zone of the Bosch induction cooktop. Bridged burners can have an unheated area between them, and they do not have the capability to heat several small pans at once. With Bosch FlexInduction, the entire zone heats up, and you can use it for either one large pan or several small ones. Here is a short video showing how the flex zone works. It controls cooking temperature, keeping it at a precise set point. From Bosch’s website: AutoChef’s innovative sensor measures the temperature from the bottom of the pan and applies only the perfect amount of energy to the element in order to deliver precise cooking results, every time, and without waste of energy. The cooktop heats to the desired temperature and makes an audible sound when it’s time to place food in the pan. Such power boosts are a common feature on many induction cooktops and ranges. However, most manufacturers offer power boost to only the largest burner, while Bosch has it on all burners. This means you can use it with small pots. This is due to how the burners draw power. A group is made up of the two similar-sized elements, the large and small element, or the FlexInduction zone (if available). It's usually divided by the right and left sides of the cooktop. The owner’s manual for the specific model will have this information. PotSense (all models) PotSense senses the size of a pan and adjusts the cooking element to it. While all induction burners do this to some degree (because they can only heat when there is contact with a magnetic pan), the Bosch actually has different sized elements within each burner that can operate separately. This feature might save you a little bit on your electric bill and help keep ambient heat in your kitchen to a minimum (though it's low anyway with induction cooktops). It isn’t completely automatic, however; you have to select a burner closest to the pan size, and you have to make sure you center it on the burner for best results. Other than proper pan placement, there is no need to activate PotSense; the cooktop does it automatically. This short video shows how PotSense works: When the time has elapsed, the burner shuts off automatically. Auto Shu?toff (all models) ? This is a safety feature that will shut a burner off after a certain amount of time if there has been no activity. At high temps, the time is an hour; at low temps, the time is up to 10 hours. Some people find this annoying, which is understandable after a lifetime of using stoves without electronic safety overrides. However, most modern stoves have safety features such as these--and those that don’t are likely to have them within a few years. Heat Indicator (all models) Each burner has a heat indicator light to warn you that it is still too hot to touch. The heat indicator has two stages that alert you to the cooling down process. Power Levels (all models) Bosch induction cooktops have 17 power levels, providing excellent, granular control. ChildLock Safety (all models) This feature prevents the cooktop from being accidentally switched on, and also locks the temperature setting while in use. Wipe Protection (all models) Pauses settings temporarily so you can clean as you cook. ReStart (all models) Remembers previous settings, making it easy to use your favorite setting. See the Bosch website for more information. The stainless bevel is available on 800 Series and Benchmark models. It is primarily an aesthetic choice, although it can provide some protection from chipping around the edges of the cooktop. It does not change the price of the cooktop. Here's how the cooktop looks with a bevel: The controls were in the bevel, and they had a tactile feel that provided “feedback” which the glass control panel does not. But since that is no longer offered, the bevel is now purely a design choice. If this interests you, you may be able to find one of these cooktops for a discount. Check with the appliancesconnection.com people for more information. Their toll-free number is 800-299-9470. Safety Features of the Bosch Induction Cooktops All Bosch induction cooktops have these safety features. Auto Shutoff: This feature turns a burner off if there has been no activity for an extended period of time, from 1-10 hours depending on the temperature of the burner. When auto shutoff is activated, the display flashes “F8” to indicate this. It can be clear by pressing any key on the control panel. Safety Lock: This safety feature prevents unwanted activation so children cannot inadvertently turn on the cooktop. Heat Indicator: A two-stage light that signals hot burners and less-hot burners.Bosch induction cooktop reviews wouldn’t be complete without a discussion of the control panels on these products. If you’ve read any of our other induction product reviews, you know we’re not huge fans of electronic controls. They simply do not provide the speed and ease of good, old-fashioned manual dials. Yet electronic panels are the future, so we’re only going to see more of them in coming years. For that reason, we don’t hate the control panels of induction cooktops: as the future becomes the present, manual controls become more and more rare. (Also, some people actually prefer electronic controls--they're certainly easier to keep clean, which is a huge plus.) What we do do is a thorough job of reviewing the control panels of the ranges and cooktops we review so we can help consumers understand what actual, daily use of the products is like. All other settings are also one-touch buttons, including power, timers, FlexInduction, and AutoChef. With the exception of the 30-inch 500 Series, setting the heat level is basically a two-touch process: you select a burner, then you select a setting. It's easier than many electronic panels, but it's definitely more cumbersome than turning a dial. There are pros and cons to the sensor touch (i.e., under glass) controls: Pros: Sleek, look great, easy to clean. Cons: Can be slow to respond if the cooktop is wet; can require more than one move to turn an element off--if it's an emergency, this can be a problem (although, you can turn the entire cooktop off with one touch of the Power key). For many people, this may be an important difference. (You can compare controls below in the review section for each model.) Turning On a Burner Here are the controls on the Benchmark cooktop. They are similar on other models: There are two ways to turn on a burner (applicable to all models except the 30-inch 500 Series). Method One: Place a pan on the burner. Press the desired burner button. Press the power level you want. So you select a burner, then press the Plus or Minus key to adjust the heat level. Method Two: Place a pan on the burner. Wait 20 seconds for the burner to turn on automatically. Select a power level within 20 seconds.? NOTE: Method Two only works if there is just one pan on the cooktop. Changing a Power Level To change a power level: Select the desired burner. As you can see, the controls are pretty straightforward. They’re well placed on the cooktop--front and center--so they’re easy to use, and you can figure out most of them without consulting the manual. There are other options such as SpeedBoost, FlexInduction, and the timer (which you can set to either turn the burner off or beep when done and keep running). These are also simple to use. All in all, we think the Bosch controls are some of the better ones (if you have to have a keypad--which you do, if you want the cool, sleek look of an induction cooktop). Also, consider buying from an appliance dealer like AJ Madison instead of Amazon. (This is where most of our links go.) Buying from a dealer has a number of advantages: They offer package deals so you can save if you're buying a suite of appliances. They have toll free numbers to call and can answer your questions before and after the sale. They offer better service options, as well as better customer service than Amazon. They may be willing to haggle and price match if you happen to find a lower price elsewhere. Their prices are usually lower than Amazon's (but check both anyway). If they sell nationally, they will have contracts with service providers in every major US city. AJ Madison sells appliances nationwide and is one of our favorite appliance dealers. They have a huge selection and provide warranties and service on all their products. They are an authorized Bosch dealer and have an excellent reputation for customer service and the lowest prices. We have found their prices are usually lower than on Amazon, so we suggest you check them first. Their website is also well organized and easy to use. As great as Amazon is for a lot of online shopping, if you're buying a large appliance, you may want the peace of mind that a dealer can offer.Check Price at AJ Madison The 24-inch is not a standard cooktop size in the US, but this is an excellent option for small spaces: RVs, boat galleys, or any tiny kitchen. Though it's small, it has the same power requirements--and output--as a 30-inch cooktop. It has the same user controls as the bigger Bosch induction cooktops and the same features as the bigger 500 Series induction cooktops. This attractive Bosch cooktop is black with gray lines and subtle circles to indicate burners. The control panel is matching gray and located in the front center under the glass (which makes for easy cleanup). The largest burner is in the right-center, with two medium burners to the left and a small one to the right and in front. This layout, makes for easy pan placement and access to all four burners in just about any circumstance.
