There is no need for measuring tools or a straight edge or for tedious calculations. All adjustments are easily accessible and the well-balanced template transfers directly from the jamb to the door (or vice-versa) with hinges on either side of the door. There?s no need to turn the template end over end. Works with or without stops installed. --C. Bob Feeser 5.0 out of 5 stars Figuring out the proper layout of the hinges on the door. Trying to take a single templet and align it perfectly straight up in order to prevent an off angle hinge. Trying to mount that templet at exactly the correct amount of depth to get a uniform edge. Routing without a glitch, or even moreso hand scribing an edge, then chiseling a flat base. Even if all of that goes perfectly, then we have the challenge of transferring those settings to the jamb in order to hang the door. How do we close the door on the hinge and scribe out the edge of the hinge onto the jamb. In plain words using the door with the hinges mounted is a rough way of getting the job done. What Bosch does with this kit, is give you three adjustable for hinge size templates for routing, that are attached, and once again adjustable.http://www.conservatoriocuneo.it/public/bosch-p210-dishwasher-manual.xml You can preset the distance between the hinges, and be sure that the templates will be perfectly upright. No off angles, which is all too often the case without this kit. Once you attach the entire apparatus, with the built in pins you rout away. Then you remove the kit from the door, attach it to the hinge jamb and rout away. This is an all metal kit that should give you years of service. So why not just buy pre-hung doors and not bother to deal with it. The problem is that in order to trim the jamb to the thickness of the wall, you have to remove it from the door, disassemble it, then run it through the table saw, then reattach it. Or, in the event of a wall thicker than the pre-hung jamb, having to live with a seam, or a very large molding to cover it. With this kit, you can buy doors that are not pre-hung, and buy jamb boards that are wider than the jamb, trim them to size on your saw, then assemble for installation. Additionally you might want to create your jamb out of something other than the standard pine. My hat is off to the Bosch engineers for designing this one. A complicated job made simple. Highly recommended. This tool falls in the category of most favored tools. It solves all of the problems. My carpenter set up the jig with no problems and hung all the doors in about 10 hours, including numerous cigarette breaks and lunch. I believe it paid for itself on that one job. After a quick learning curve, I was able to hang 3 to 4 doors per hour and they fit perfectly every time. It's a well built and solid tool. My only complaint is the less than adequate instructions, but you'll figure it out soon enough. We have used it once and are hpopefull it will be a good quality tool that lasts. The instructions are easy to work with. Once the jig is set up I can zip thru doors in no time.Bosch said they have little interest in this item and the router attachment is one they have thrown in the box for the Past 20 yrs.http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/78211 They do not even provide one that fits on a Bosch router. Huh???It has proven to be reliable, resilient and accurate throughout that span of time. The kit today remains virtually unchanged today. Parts are easy to obtain from Bosch should they be needed. I have nicked one of the cross pins only once and Bosch shipped me a replacement very quickly. After the first use the jig becomes very intuitive to set up for various door sizes and butt layouts. I made a few hardwood extension bars for mine (for odd dimension doors I ran across) which have traveled with the kit over the years. Recently I splurged and had a local machine shop mill them out of solid aluminum for me and then added a few detents on the ends myself, similar to the factory pieces. I cannot say enough about how pleased I have been with this piece of equipment. Like all items that age, there are a few things that might be improved upon, but the kit remains a standard that all other manufacturers attempt to emulate and fall short, due to the overall usefulness of this kit. I get a charge out of the comments from people who see it for the first time. They mostly presume it is a difficult and ponderous item to set up and use (due to its complex appearance) when in fact the opposite is true. This is one of the dinosaurs that survived the ice age, I may be the other. It's the only one I've ever owned so can't really compare but this one works flawlessly. Great time saver.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again I would recommend this product to anyone who has a number of doors to hang with the same hinge layout. I have only used it on one project so far, but think it has justified the cost. I feel that the all metal construction will allow the product to provide years of service, compared with most of the alternatives that have a large percentage of plastic or similar parts.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. P. 3.0 out of 5 stars Each templete is a little different in height from the each other which gives you different depths of cut. The one that is off the most is the fourth one I needed to buy. The hinge setting pivot that adjust the width of your door is very loose and some keep falling off their pivot. It is made with a cheap little rivot that does not hold up to use at all. I have heard the older models where better and that they cut back and made newer cheaper ones. It could be a lot better, I was almost thinking of making my own templetes that would be more reliable and accurate. Its hard to beleive that they would sell this on the open market. I have used the Porta-cable, even thou the Bosch is easyer to set up the porta-cable is built a lot better. Please try again later. Please try again later. Amazon Customer 5.0 out of 5 stars Bosch bought the tool from Stanley tools decades ago, and Stanley bought it from someone else years before that. It is an old design that is yet to be improved upon by anyone else. Although the initial price seems high compared to lesser capable templates like the Porter cable, you will make that money back very quickly in time saved and problems avoided. I use this tool for retrofit and for new construction and no longer carry fixed templates anymore. For new construction, you simply spend a few minutes assembling and configuring the template and then it is good to go for days of door hanging. It takes just moments to switch the hinge size for different door thicknesses, a time saver compared to fetching another full size template that could be lost in a different part of the jobsite. Retrofitting new doors in old jambs is cake as you can easily match the template to the old hinge layout for perfect mortises that fit the first time. The rails have holes that engage ball bearings on the template frames. This prevents the hinge layout from changing if you should drop the tool on end. If you have ever used the PC template and bumped it while transferring from the door to the jamb, you know what a problem it is too have the template spacing change on you. On room additions, it is easy to match the hinge layout for the new doors and jambs to match the old doors due to the adjustability of the Bosch template (this is important in situations where the new doors are close to old doors and the homeowner would notice the hinges not lining up). The kit comes with 2 top guides of different lengths that accomodate any top hinge spacing you will find in the field. The rails allow infinite adjustment so you can quickly match any hinge layout. One thing the PC has over the bosch is that edge stops retract. This is only an issue when remortising the hinge gaines on an old jamb that has casing and caulking too close to the jamb edge. On the Bosch, the fixed edge stops can sometimes hit the caulking or casing and prevent the template sections from laying completely flat. On the PC, the stops can retract to counteract this problem, but overall the Bosch is significantly more accurate in retrofit situations. When you first get your new Bosch template kit, you need to fine tune the hinge length stops. From the factory, they are not correct. Two screws loosen and allow an adjustable plate to be moved into the correct position. A quick run on a 2x4 lets you check for perfection before you ever touch an expensive door. As mentioned by others, the small metal case is much more user friendly than the extra long PC box, but it doesn't hold the 4 hinge conversion kit or the 3 hinge extended rail kit. What most guys do is buy an additional standard kit, and make custom wooden rails for 8 to 10 foot doors. This way you have 6 template sections instead of four, and you can theoretically have 2 guys hanging 6-8 doors for more production. The nails are very strong, I have spares but haven't had a problem with breakage at all. In fact, you can order from Bosch any part you need and can get stuff shipped next day if the parts are in stock. The jamb gauges only fit Timely or hollow metal frames, so you need to file them down to fit wood jambs for retrofit jobs. But there are other ways to match existing hinge layouts so I don't recommend the jamb gauges unless you like to order book doors for commercial jobs or do nothing but retrofit. Like any metal template, when you hit it with the router bit, it gets nicked and the bit can get damaged. But the template sections completely disassemble so any damaged part can be replaced. More than once I forgot to put the template guide in the router and got some healthy gouges in the template. A call to Bosch and all was fixed. Usually, though, you will nick the sides or length adjustment plate and these are quickly fixed in the field. The hinge size adjustment bar can be rotated to move the nick out of the way. Very reliable even when damaged. This is a terrific professional tool for the professional door hanger. A homeowner would not need this tool, and it is not efficient for hanging just 1 door. Please try again later. Please try again later. Please upgrade your browser to improve your experience. Hopefully someone else has purchased the same device and solved the issue. I have the same setup. You can do those all day long. I don't have it in front of me but I know the adjustable ends for the height of the hinge are replacable. So scribe a line on the steel plate ands size it to suit your needs. Remember to pick up some extras for when you are doing other doors. Once again, buy some extras for normal doors withing the stock range of this door jig. It's been a few years since I've seen a Bosch jig used but basically they are a rectangular jig same as the PC? I assumed that the PC jig would do it since they made the bushing, but that could be wrong.I'll try that when the kids leave home and I retire. There is no adjustment, no margin for error. On the 3rd occasion I regetfully declined, stating artistic license. But you have to pull the base to make them fit. C) Someone in a previous post mentioned that I should use a bearing with offset. This method will not work with the Bosch Door and Template kit. E) The Bosch website needs some definite improvement. F) Tip for buying a Door and Hinge System. Buy PC if you have a PC router, by Bosch if you have a Bosch router, etc. This method will not work with the Bosch Door and Template kit. New posts are no longer possible, but the collected work of building professionals sharing information remains available here as a resource to the JLC community. I assume that you use the same line for either door height.is that right? 3) On the job I was at today, the four doors I had to replace each had hinge locations on the jamb at weird measurements. Basically, all eight hinges were at different measurements. Instead of futzing with the rails and trying to adjust everything for each door, I was planning on taking the measurements for each hinge and using one guide with out the rails (moving it for each hinge). Seems like it's defeating the purpose of the whole setup though. Is there a better way? 4) Assuming moving the tempate around manually, is there a good way to get the template nailed in dead on. I don't have any doors or jambs to burn experimenting so I appreciate any insight you guys can give me. Thanks! Those are the three most common hinge sizes. Tip - Always let your router stop before pulling it out. Or buy some extra rails. Ed.Ed, you just saved me a ton of time and aggravation. I owe you a beer the next time I'm in Dallas!Instead of futzing with the rails and trying to adjust everything for each door, I was planning on taking the measurements for each hinge and using one guide with out the rails (moving it for each hinge). In time you will be able to eyeball the template offset pretty well. Templaco works well here.Good luck with the doors. Ed.If all the hinge mortises are the same, I just just a single Templaco template, instead of risking damage to my Bosch. And Ed's right about the extra rails. Buy extra pins, too, and some of those end-stops, too. You can't always expect to stop the bit before you remove the router. You could glue a dime or something to it to make it thicker to get a fatter gap but it seems largely uneccessary. Be sure to bend the tab flat because they are soft and can come from the factory all twisted which throws off the alignment. I recheck mine at the beginning of the day just to be safe. 2. Correct. The other line is for both 6-8 and 6-6 doors. I have never seen a 6-6 door other than one I cut down. It really doesn't matter which one you use, though it is important to use the same setting on both rails to get the hinges evenly spaced. 3. It sounds like you are retrofitting new doors into old jambs. I personally adjust the jig to each door. It is quick and accurate if you butt the template sections into the existing hinges and secure the rail screws. Then just set the top tab and route away. Some guys adjust their jig then route the door and reroute the jamb to ensure everything will fit, but I find it better to route only the door to avoid enlarging a hinge mortise on the jamb too much. This way the old hinge screw holes are still valid and don't need to be filled and their is no unsightly gap around the hinges. Place the hinge blocks into the old mortises and then place the template guides over the blocks. Since the blocks are larger than the hinges, there will be no slop between the blocks and the template section. Instead, use guage blocks or key the door template to the existing hinge barrels to guarantee a perfect fit. 5. Gary is right, have spare template parts on hand. There are a few workarounds if you don't have any spare parts on hand: If you nick a template rail, you can unscrew it and flip it over to have a good edge (you need to switch it from the left to right side or vice versa as well to get the holes in the right spot). If you nick a hinge size adjustement bar, just rotate it so the nick is out of the way. If you nick one of the fine-tuning adjustement plates (opposite the hinge sizing bar), replace it or pull it out and file the edge until the nick is gone, then reinstall it and fine tune it again. 6. For 3 hinge 8' doors, all you need are wood link rails that you can make out of scrap lumber. I have done large jobs with the woodies and the wood rails are usually good for 2 or 3 homes if you are not adjusting them constantly. 7. For 4 hinge doors, you can buy the expensive 4th hinge kit with no case, or buy a second 3 hinge kit with a case and use wood link rails and one of the template sections from the second kit. Then I make sure the template nails go in the old nail holes and route the last hinge. The spacing comes out perfect and you save yourself some money on the 4th hinge kit. -Aaron.
