However, one other thing that made the Bronco exciting was the prospect of a manual gearbox mated to the drivetrain. The initial leaks had suggested the presence of a seven-speed manual transmission, and now that the Bronco has made its debut, the same is confirmed - as long as you don’t go with the Bronco Sport, which is only available with an automatic transmission. As time passed, more information about it came to light, and now that the SUV has debuted, we know for sure it’s present. Back in 2018, Jalopnik had reported that Getrag had been working on a manual gearbox for the Bronco since 2015. Dubbed as the MT88, this seven-speed gearbox was said to be paired to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. The new gearbox is rated for 405 pound-feet of torque and is capable of use in all-wheel-drive configurations. To draw you a comparison Car and Driver reported that when you pair the shorter 3.06:1 low gear of the optional two-speed transfer case and the shortest 4.70:1 rear axle with the Bronco’s first gear 6.588:1 ratio, it tops out at 7 mph in low range and 21 mph in high range. The Wrangler, on the other hand, is also good up to 7 mph in the low range but can go up to 29 mph in high range. Ford’s latest off-roader can cruise at 80 mph all day long in its top gear with the engine spinning at 2,400 rpm; 150 rpm lower than the Wrangler. There was also news of Ford engineering a lockout mechanism that would prevent you from going into the low gear unless you’re in four-wheel drive mode and have the transfer case in low-range, but we don’t have clarity on this aspect yet. The 550 stands for the torque in newton-meters, which is 406 pound-feet of torque when converted. Ford, however, calls it the MT88 internally. The long-term reliability of this gearbox will be under scrutiny because the Mustang’s Getrag six-speed manual isn’t a fuss-free unit. Also, it seems highly impressive on paper, but we’ll reserve our opinions until tested in real-world conditions. For starters, the original Bronco was only offered in a two-door body style for the 30 years that it was in the market. However, the new Bronco is being produced in a four-door variant, as well as a Range Rover-esque Sport variant. Having four doors is nothing new, considering competitors like the Jeep Wrangler offer more doors, however, for any Bronco enthusiasts, the added doors are an unusual sight. Ford says that independent suspension aids in better control, confidence, and comfort when driving. And in case you need any more articulation when trudging through the off-road terrain and crawling through the multitude of off-camber obstacles you’re likely to come across, the Bronco has you covered with its “segment-exclusive” semi-active hydraulic stabilizer bar disconnect, which disconnects the front stabilizer bar at the push of a button. However, you’ll just have to wait until next Spring when Ford dealers will be finally getting them in. But it appears that Ford might just be willing to listen to those folks, according to a recent tweet from Ford spokesman Mike Levine. Basically, the crawler gear is just an extremely short ratio (several times shorter than first gear) that, when combined with the Bronco's low-speed transfer case, allows the car to move forward at as slowly as 1 mph with the clutch fully out—something that would be impossible in first gear. There are three Bronco vehicles (for now) Ford is launching two-editions of the Bronco off-roader based on the Ranger's truck platform. No, the Bronco isn't getting a V8 Neither of them is a V8; the base engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four putting out 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the upgraded engine is a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 with 310 hp and 400 lb-ft. The Bronco Sport will also have two engines, a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 181 hp and 190 lb-ft and a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter with 245 hp and 275 lb-ft. The Base trim can serve as a budget version, or your stripped-down starter for accessorizing. Moving up the ladder, the Big Bend, Black Diamond and Outer Banks trims add amenities; the Wildtrak and Badlands serve as the more hardcore off-roading trims. The Bronco Sport will begin with four trims (again, besides the First Edition): Base, Big Bend, Outerbanks and Badlands. The major differentiator is that Badlands will be the more off-roading spec, with bigger tires, a full-size spare and access to Ford's Off-Roadeo program. It will function as a six-speed in normal driving, with a super-low crawl gear meant for off-roading. The stick will only be available with the 2.3-liter engine. A 10-speed automatic will be available for the four-cylinder, and standard on the six-cylinder. The Bronco Sport will use an eight-speed automatic with both motors, although the bigger engine will have paddle shifters. You'll be able to enjoy the open air Plus, on the four-door Bronco, you'll be able to store the removed doors (each in a protective bag) inside the trunk. Many of the components are designed to be easily removable and swappable with standard tools. The Bronco Sport will carry all your gear The Bronco Sport is designed to help you enjoy the outdoors. It will feature more than 100 factory accessory options, which can be tied together in Bike, Snow, Water and Camping bundles. Some of the options include an overlanding-ready roof rack that can hold a rooftop tent and a Yakima interior bike rack that can hold two 27.5-inch-wheel mountain bikes. The Bronco Sport also has a built-in bottle opener. The advanced version is a two-speed 4x4 automatic electromechanical transfer case with on demand 4H engagement. The combination of the manual transmission with the advanced transfer case can give the Bronco a crawl ratio of 94.75:1. It can be fitted with 35-inch tires. Courtesy of manufacturer Another blast from the past is back. This time, it’s the 2021 Ford Bronco 4x4, an iconic nameplate with a rich history as a rugged, no-nonsense off-roading SUV. More than 270,000 GPs were built for Allied forces. And when soldiers returned home, they scooped up surplus GPs, but they were too tiny and uncomfortable for regular daily life. So Ford went back to the drawing board and built a more upscale and spacious, yet durable off-road SUV. And the Bronco was born. Revealed on August 11, 1965, the first Bronco hit the streets in 1966. At launch, it had four-wheel drive and a 105 hp, 2.8-litre I-6 mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. Over time, it gained more power and capability, yet always remained true to its rugged roots. But in 1996, Bronco reached the end of its line when it fell out of favour with consumers, replaced by more popular family-oriented SUVs like the Ford Explorer and Expedition. Still, over three decades and five generations, Ford sold over 1.1 million Broncos. Some models have quick-release removable and stowable roof panels and doors for an open-air convertible-like feel. So, there’s no need for suction mounts on the windshield or long wires dangling over the instrument panel. Cabin cleanup is easy thanks to items such as optional rubberized washable flooring with removable drain plugs so you can hose it out, controls made of silicon that withstand water and dirt, and marine-grade vinyl seats that resist mould and mildew. In the rear, Bronco has a wide-opening swing gate, a built-in bottle opener, and a slide-out tailgate so you can sit and watch the sun set on a warm night. With the “rugged utility vehicle” class seeing a spike in popularity thanks to Jeep’s successful redesign of the Wrangler for model-year 2018, the time is certainly right for other brands to get in on the action. That’s exactly what Ford has done, bringing the fight to Jeep by designing an SUV to one-up the Wrangler. The new Bronco’s combination of flexibility, iconic style, thoughtful design touches and no-excuses equipment will finally give the legendary Jeep a serious head-to-head competitor. Make no mistake, the JL-generation Wrangler is excellent — but knowing what we now know about the Bronco, the next-generation Wrangler will have to be even better. Ford went to town examining the original Bronco, even taking laser scans of it, to incorporate specific design elements into the new one. Check out the peaked fenders with trail sights that double as tie-down points to let you know where the corners are. Note the round headlights, flat grille and one-piece taillights. All of it is meant to evoke the spirit of the original Bronco, playing the nostalgia card that works so well for Jeep yet creates something equally distinctive and uniquely Ford in this application. Yes, the doors come off — both the two- and four-door models have frameless windows and cowl-mounted mirrors, which allow you to wrap the doors in protective fabric bags with handles and lift them off their hinges more easily. The four-door Bronco can actually store its doors in the cargo area, allowing you to continue the fun without leaving them behind. The two-door model has insufficient room to make that happen, so you’ll have to leave the doors at home. The four-door model has an optional four-panel hardtop with a full-width piece that fits over the second row. In addition to this, all Broncos have removable rear-quarter window panels that leave the overhead panels in place to create a bikini-style hardtop over the occupants and cargo area. A soft-top comes standard on the four-door but isn’t available on the two-door — a curious omission that Ford vaguely hinted at remedying through an accessory offering down the road. The design of the structure cage eliminates the sport bar connecting the B-pillars, meaning the Bronco provides an even bigger open-air experience than the Wrangler’s design. Bumpers are powder-coated steel, with some versions featuring removable end caps for better approach angles. There are easy-access tow hooks, integrated winch-mount capability and even mounting points for overhead accessories. There’s also plenty of underbody protection, with steel shields protecting the sensitive parts underneath. Higher trim levels will get a front bash plate, plus shields for the engine, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank. Side rock rails are also available, strong enough to support the Bronco’s weight if it’s leaning to that side. The answer, at least on paper, is an unqualified yes. Powering the Bronco will be the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that we’ve seen in the Ranger, Mustang and Explorer, which makes a Ford-estimated 270 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque (final numbers are still to be determined). It’s mated to either a Getrag seven-speed manual transmission with a dedicated creeper gear or a 10-speed automatic transmission. The optional powertrain adds two cylinders to make a turbocharged 2.
