This user guide gives simple, step-by-step instructions for installing and configuring your Escalade ATA RAID Controller. Tools Required. ESD Precautions. Standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions must be followed to avoid damaging computer components and accessories when installing or removing the Escalade ATA RAID Controller. The Escalade 8000 series of Serial ATA RAID cards are the most advanced controllers available, supporting from 2 to 12 Serial ATA drives. AMCC Storage combines an advanced non-blocking switched fabric architecture StorSwitch, with SATA drives to deliver a highly scalable hardware RAID storage solution. Each controller boasts a PCI 66MHz custom ASIC that combines an integrated RISC processor, PCI bridge (64-bit, 66MHz) and XOR RAID engine. The 3ware 8506-4LP offers the most popular Serial ATA RAID 5 as well as Levels 0,1,10 and JBOD. When a generic ATA drive out performs your RAID drive, then what's the point. I've used this on 3 systems, with different configs, 2 WIndows Server environments and one Red Hat machine. Avoid if you care at all about performance.I was expecting greatness from this and I received it. Virtually plug and play with FreeBSD.Performance is better in RAID 5 than the Adaptec 2410SA and the price is very reasonable, especially if you are familiar with SCSI pricing for a good RAID card. This was in fact my first experience with SATA and I was very pleased with the slim profile the cables provide. Having such thin and narrow cables makes dedicating a channel to each drive so much easier than with PATA cables, which becomes very cumbersome. I run the card under Fedora Core 1 and am very pleased with its performance. The only place they have fallen down is on the documentation, which is abysmal. The downloadable docs on their site are only slightly better. Performance seems to be very good and tests with hot swapping drives and doing background rebuilds have been quite successful.Everything has been working great.Click here for more details. The cache memory is provided by means of a 144-pins SO-DIMM module, which can be replaced by memory modules with a maximum capacity of 1GB. At the moment 512MB is the limit because 1GB SDRAM SO-DIMMs are scarcely available. An optional battery backup unit (BBU) prevents the loss of data in the write-back cache when a power failure occurs. The SRAM chips could be omitted because the SO-DIMM is also used for RAM. These chips, named 200-0033-00, are now in use for several years. Native Serial ATA is still lacking in the design, and it seems a native Serial ATA solution won't be appearing in the near future. The eight and twelve port versions are available in ML versions supporting multi-lane connections. 3ware has developed its own solution to combine four Serial ATA-ports in one InfiniBand connection, so that the number of cables can be reduced four times. A chassis with a multi-lane backplane is required to use multi-lane cables. Support for RAID 50, adapter teaming, and 64-bit LBA have been added. 3ware is promising the addition of online capacity expansion and online RAID level migration in future firmware updates. With those extensions the featureset of 3ware's RAID software stack would reach the enterprise level. The firmware update has been in the pipeline for quite some time now, but so far has not been delivered. According to the original roadmap, online capacity expansion and online RAID level migration were planned for the summer of 2004. The driver support for the Escalade 9500S is similar to the Escalade 8506; pretty good. There are two ways to make the hard disk accessible for other controllers. The first way is to reconnect the drive to the Escalade 9500 and configure the drive as a single disk in the management tool. The second method of unlocking the drive is by using the obscure hotkey -r in the management tool. Although putting a lock on the disks helps preventing the disk to be written by accident there is also a potential danger: if the Escalade or the array fails, it won't be possible to reconstruct the data on the array by using recovery tools on a system with a non-3ware controller. We would prefer not to have the locking feature. It can be really frustrating for the user, especially because you can only learn about the existence of this 'feature' by reading the manual. We all know that most users only read manuals after a problem arises. In our case, we were hinted about the existence of the locking feature in an appendix to the RAIDCore BC4852 manual. Similar to its predecessor, the Escalade 9500S-8 comes with a firm price tag. All SATA controllers from 3Ware are based on an architecture called StorSwitch. As the word suggests, StorSwitch is a kind of packet switching that many of you might be familiar with from the Ethernet area. It involves each drive communicating autonomously with the controller via what's called a port identifier - here, 3Ware introduces the keywords point-to-point and non-blocking. In contrast to a split bus such as SCSI, it has the advantage that each drive can function simultaneously and independently of the others. This is especially true as it also applies to Version 7506 of UltraATA. In concrete terms, the required hardware in the Escalade 8506 can be divided into two parts. On the one hand there are the ATA interfaces each supporting four ports, while on the other, we have the actual RISC processor with XOR engine as hardware that also contains the 64 bit PCI interface. The 3Ware Disk Manager can be used to configure and manage the drive array(s), and it also masters features needed for business use such as e-mail or pager notification of failure. The 3ware.biz website does not exactly excel through good German - something that doesn't instill the sense of professionalism that 3Ware deserves. We therefore decided to concentrate on the English-language site where 3Ware provides all sorts of information. We like the clear statement that arrays can be a maximum of 2 TB - HighPoint, for example, fails to broach the subject at all. Besides for RAIDCore, 3Ware also supports several controllers simultaneously. Four of them can be used together. That said, array support does not stretch quite so far, because although an Escalade controller can manage several arrays, they must be located on different hard drives. Ports 5-8 are on the reverse. The intended space for two further ports in the 12-channel version is easy to spot (top right). Gotcha! eight ports, all facing the front. The loss of one hard drive in a RAID 5 array with eight drives leads to serious reductions in performance. Nevertheless, the rebuild was quickly performed.
