The actual Open Box product may differ in packaging and included accessories, but has been tested to ensure basic functionality. Great upgrade for an old server. Migrated an ancient Win2K domain controller from single IDE to RAID after installing the drivers and it booted right up!I've been building and working on computers for ten years and I've never seen IDE cables with such a tight fit. I pulled the cable apart trying to take it out and I was afraid of breaking the controller card and drive enclosure when attaching and detaching these cables.RAID 1 (mirror) - a 120 gig and a 160 gig. On my adaptec card I could set it up to mirror the 120 and still be able to use the other 40 - no such luck with this card. You can only setup the arrays in the BIOS of the card when booting - the web interface doesn't give you many options at all. When the server came back up, the 3Ware BIOS gave a message along the lines of the mirror being out of sync. I went into the BIOS, and selected the option to re-sync the mirror. So it totally hosed my data. I've seen that happen plenty of times with an El Cheapo RAID card; I bought this card to avoid that. I'm an IT professional, but of course there's a chance (albeit small) that this was user error, or some unrelated failure, so I've given the card an Average rating instead of Very Poor.I had a backup from the previous night, so I didn't try any partition recovery tools) I was able to install an OS and the mirror appeared to be stable. So this wasn't due to some simultaneous drive failure or a complete controller failure. I've rebuilt my mail server as a VM with its storage on an mdadm array. They do have support for RH and another distrib.I don't hold that against the mfr.http://www.lvb.eu/userfiles/bosch-hot-water-on-demand-manual.xml

These cards only have the half installation height and can be assembled without an additional riser card at 2 U servers. If you use 64 bit plug-in cards, then these onl can achive their maximum performance in a 64 bit slot. If a 64 bit plug-in card is used in connection with a 32 bit riser card, performance halves. Due to the arrangement of the slots, at special mainboards (e.g. Intel Torrey Pines) only 32 bit riser cards can be assembled. Systems with Low Profile cards so offer a mainboard-independent maximum performance and are more cost-effective as servers with riser card. Riser cards are only necessary if the desired plug-in card is not available as Low Profile variant. To start viewing messages,I have successfully installed both Windows XP and Windows7 on this RAID in the exact same machine. At one point I even had a dual boot with FreeBSD and Windows XP installed on this RAID. I'm trying to install Fedora17 on this RAID and the installer is not detecting the PCI card at all. The GUI installer indicates that there are no drives on which I may install the OS. I did a little digging and it appears that the 3w-xxxx kernel module is not being loaded: when the installer GUI starts, I switch over to the terminal and run lsmod and the 3w-xxxx kernel module is not listed. I'm not sure where to go from here. Does anyone know a way to work around this. Can I direct the system to probe for new hardware a second time after manually loading the 3w-xxxx kernel module. Would that even work. Slackware 12.0 (Defult 2.6 kernel)RemoteAccess 1. It only takes a minute to sign up. The RAID controller is a 3ware 7006-2. Recently the controller has been reporting ECC errors from one of the drives. It was able to correct all of those errors, but I figured I better replace the drive before it dies. I have also removed the good drive from the array and put in the bad drive (the one that had all the ECC errors) to see if I could rebuild the array using the bad drive, but that didn't work either. Could the controller have gone bad, even though all the other functionality seems to be working. I can boot into the OS fine, it's just the rebuilding that won't work. Last year when I rebuilt the array, I had tried using a slightly smaller replacement drive and the controller gave an error about the drive being smaller and it wouldn't even let me start the rebuild. This time it did not display any error and let me start the rebuild, so I know the problem doesn't have to do with drive size. Then the progress will say 1, and it remains stuck at 1 until I reboot again. Then it says 2 and stays stuck at 2. Maybe I should try rebooting my computer 100 times to see if the array is completely rebuilt after that? The good hard drive no longer boots from port 1, but it does boot from port 0 (which is strange, since it booted fine from port 1 yesterday, and also port 0 is where the replacement drive was plugged into and it couldn't do a rebuild). I just ordered the same RAID controller off ebay and hopefully that will solve the problem. Either way it sounds like it could be a bug in the firmware. If you don't have the most recent firmware then try to flash the firmware with the newest version available, lsi should have them, see: In addition see if you can install the newest management software. That controller lasted 2 years, because I am once again experiencing the exact same problems. Time to get another one off Ebay. Please be sure to answer the question. I don't know what that was about, since bash reports larger usage on all my systems. Now if we could just get 3ware to provide either the source to these things, or binaries for other platforms, we'd be all set (I want to use it in a MIPS box). I think we would be best off asking upstream to add version numbers and better identifiers to their tarball filenames. I don't have any 9xxx cards to test with even (just 7xxx and 8xxx), so if you'd like to ask them, I'd be grateful. In the meanwhile I have it working on x86, it's very nice. This bugtracker entry was just created to keep you up to date with my efforts.I haven't written an ebuild before, but I'm willing to learn and help out as soon as I'm done with finals. Let me know if I can be of assistance.I wrote to them just today that I want them to solve my problems - it's been overs 6 weeks now. I wonder if they always behave like this to custoumers. Maybe it's time to test other controllers. Status of the ebuild: 9.4.0.1 is the last usable version.I thought I needed this ebuild, but I'm currently running 3Ware 7506-4LP on Gentoo without it, with no problems. I have SMART checks that pass thru to the drives fine. What do you think?I worte another SCR for the issues with the setuplinux installer and also included you comments about the 3dm2.conf getting reset. The 9.4.1.1 codeset needed to be removed because of performance problems but should be released soon as 9.4.1.2. I have also forwarded the latest comments and information o our Linux engineer.Linux 32 Bit:I'd just like to add my vote to get this working - I have the 3ware 9500S-8 controllers, and I'd really like to get email notifications working on my 3 gentoo servers. Tell them you don't like the new proprietary. BTW for everyone interested, I've got a response on 2nd August 2007:Our engineering asked me for more information about the problem and while tryngThere is still no fix. JosephHere's what I wrote 3ware support today. Dear 3ware Support,In version 9.4.0.1 is was a nicely working program, 3,6MB big and everything worked beautifully across several Linux distributions (Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu). In version 9.4.1.2 however i cannot find this nice 3DM2 tool anymore. And i usually really get everything to work in Linux, even obscure things. Where is the normal 3DM2 program package like it used to be. This new development is a major letdown for me! I generally buy 3WARE because of the good linux compatibility, and i'm seriously starting to wonder if 3ware's Linux support is going down the hill (with this new 3DM2 it certainly seems like it.). Linux compatibility and a working 3DM2 monitoring programm is VERY IMPORTANT though. If this 3DM2 issue is not resolved in the next release (at the latest!) i will seriously have to start looking at other vendors. Yours sincerely,BTW: 9.4.1.3 is out. I've got no time to test it this week, though. Response:- 15th October 2007At this point it will not be fixed because it is by design that the log is reset after every reboot and 3ware will not be changing this. I replied to that, of course. Well. There are some changes in the installer. In 9.5.0 you can specify a file with variables in it. Maybe the author never heard of getopts. It's just labled to be a Linux installer, so.this line is also funny. See IRIX man pages of sh for more details. Irix? WTF? It's the LINUX x86 installer. I guess that code comes from the Installshield crap they bundled. It's called in executeExternalInstructions()So the following SHOULD work, but in fact does NOT:That error occurs because, FILEINDEXCOUNT is initialized AFTER mode(). They've probably never tested that functionality. I wonder if their controllers firmware is also coded like that. Insert this before mode(). Now the installer exists silently. In a week, I have to order a new server. Maybe I should buy another brand of RAId controller.?Response:- 31st October 2007Thanks for the support. Sure we will look in to this and will fix this bug. Regards. Tech 6. And here is their latest answer about the issue with the changed config file. Response:- 13th November 2007It is unlikely that this will get addressed in the near future, however. Patrick. BTW: 9.5 even has a percentage meter, lol. WTF is that tool doing there. It just needs to copy a few filesThanks. Tech 6. ARECA 1210er are fine I heard, they also ship with a web tool which is available as single download. If I've got time, I'll write an ebuild and link to the bugtracker entry from there. I've also got a nice offer from our supplier, the next Server we order will propably be shipped with an areca.I'm sorry to say it, but goodbye 3ware. Request:- 16th January 2008 at 14:44Please stop closing them. And PLEASE, fix at least some. Response:- 16th January 2008 at 16:41 Tech 7For your kind information, all your cases are still kept opened and not closed. And sure your problems will be fixed. Thanks for your kind co-operation and patience. Your's Sincerely. Tech 7. Maybe their bugtracker just sucks. The last replies came very quickly, they even sent a mail with an attached tool for the win2003 problem. I just wonder, why the almighty 3dm2 tool cannot re-enable the cache if windows disables it. It should just read the config and set the options when the system is fully up, not earlier. That's a bit strange, it might be crappy windows' fault, but that's not this bug entries' theme! Sadly, I'd say, support does not really seem to care if they loose custumers. And it's not only that they only loose us, but also my friends who are sysadmins, too, won't buy 3ware if I tell them about the whole issue. Let's see if I get a free SAS controller when it's one year of unfixed problems:(. Let's see what happens (I guess I can prepare the blog entry already). We appreciate your patience. And surely your requests will be resolved as soon as possible. Tech 7.We can understand your problem. And thanks for using our 3ware controllers. Then I unpacked the.tgz, and put the stuff into their directories. I used the old gentoo 3dmd2 init script, generated the certificate using openssl (for commandline see the debian scripts) and everything seems to work perfectly fine. And of course i opened a ticket at 3ware and requested a zip'ed or tar'ed version of 3DM2 while telling them that their installer is oversized non-working crap. Not that I have much hope, but well, you gotta try and complain until they finally get it.I had considered creating my own packages and publishing them, but I guess that's illegal due to their license?! Can anyone check this? I'm pretty sure they will. Yes. You must reproduce on any such copy all copyright notices and any other proprietary legends found on the original. Certain rights are not granted under this Agreement, but may be available under a separate agreement. It's there just for backup puropses.;)I'd sure like to see this happen. I have 3 of these cards (9500S-8), but to be honest, I've already decided that any new purchases will NOT be 3ware cards. I'm currently leaning toward the Areca cards. I really like the fact that they have a browser based management capability built into the card itself.Certain rights are notSame over here. SAS Areca Cards will be the next purchase. I really like the fact that they. This is offtopic; but do you have a link. I thought it worked the same way as the 3ware cards, I found the webtool on an ftp. Which model(s) do you talk about, how are the management capabilites implemented? The next proposed release will be in August and we will recommend the marketing team to have an individual 3dm2 tool. Thanks. Response:- 25th March 2008 at 4:51 Tech 6August is the proposed release for our next codeset. It will be fixed with the new release. Thank you very much for your patience. Oh, only about 4 months for a fix! About the problem not being able to install (with 9.5.0.1) on 64Bit. The new 9.5.0.1 is released and yet we are having some problem with this. The engineering and testing team are working on this 9.5.0.1 codeset in order to release a error free 3DM2 tool. We will let you know once if they are complete with this.
