Licensing requirements are the same whether Adaptive Optimization is implemented on the node (as in HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2) or in System Reporter 3.1 MU1. System Reporter was until recently the reporting tool for 3PAR, the install required the 3PAR System Reporter software and an external database such as MySQL. The install could be painful and I have to admit when I first saw System Reporter I couldn’t believe it, the interface and graphs looked look like some college kid had coded it in a lunch break. But over time I learned to love it, I got used to that crazy interface and saw there really was a wealth of information in there. The end of support date is related to the end of support date for the 3PAR OS the System Reporter installation is reporting on. The reporting element is installed by default when you install SSMC which I covered previously. The System Reporter licence option is still available but what it means now is access to historic data through SSMC and threshold alerts. There is no need to migrate data from your external System Reporter system, SSMC uses on node data which will have been collected automatically. To help to avoid a repeat of the 5 minutes I spent rolling around the floor muttering that all the data was lost, I have been looking into an automated way to backup the MySQL database used by System Reporter. If more than one system is being monitored with SSMC, there is a drop down containing system names of each HP 3PAR StoreServ array. Figure 4, General customization illustrates selection options. By default, identification of the report chart being generated is populated in report name. The user can alter this value and if more than one array is being monitored, it is a best practice to alter the report name. The description field is not populated. It is optional to provide a description. Best practice always modify the report name to include a unique identifier for each chart. This customizes the report and allows the user to select the report template more than once. Figure 4 Create report General panel Objects There are three selections available. - All: Displays data for all objects of a given component. - Filter by objects: You can select specific objects and displays data for those objects. You can add or remove specific objects using the Add objects and Remove objects button. Figure 6 illustrates when you have performed Add objects operation. For example, provide data for only FC, NL drives. You can add or remove specific rules using the Add rules and Remove rules button. Figure 7 illustrates when you have performed Add rules operation. In general, time settings will make inquiries on the following attributes; each attribute can be customized to fit the - need in reporting. Report type - Time interval: Plots data over a period of time. - Specific time: Compares a large number objects specific to an instance of time. Time interval - Default: timeframe which is charted is defined by period under settings. - Custom date range: if selected, two independent boxes appear in the tool. When the cursor is placed within the box, a calendar will pop up to assist the user for date and time selection. From: Date and time by which start reporting. To: Date and time to end reporting. 8 9 Sampling: You have three choices of data sample by which to chart - Hi-res: Data collected at the frequency of every five minutes. - Hourly: Data collected at the frequency of every hour. - Daily: Data collected at the frequency of every day. Period: this setting only applies if the user selects Time interval as a report type and Default as the time interval. A drop down menu appears and the user can select a reporting time of one hour to one year. Figure 8 Create report Time Settings panel for Overtime and Specific time reports. Chart Options Chart options vary with each category of report templates. You can provide Group by, Order by and the charts that you wish to plot. You have to specify the Group by column and the objects are grouped by accordingly. Compare by is applicable only for overtime interval reports. Scheduled reports created during a scheduled timeframe can be ed or displayed as a csv file or pdf. The following schedule patterns are supported. Filter by rules: Select to apply filters for physical drives. For example, Drive types FC and SSD are selected using Add rules. The performance data for FC and SSD is displayed. To remove a specific rule, click Remove rules. Do one of the following: Select Most recent sample. Enter a Custom specific time. 2. Select a sampling resolution. 3. In the Chart options, select the number of top or bottom objects. For example, Top 20 is selected 4. Enter the Order by, for example Order the Top 20 objects by Total IOPs. 5. Select the metrics that will be plotted. For example IOPs, Service time and Bandwidth are selected. Figure 14 Time settings and chart options in create report dialog for Specific time reports 13 14 Create Threshold Alert Create Threshold Alert in ESR To Add alert rule, select the resolution, Metrics and provide the threshold values. You can also add an recipient when an alert is generated. The Objects and Metrics panel in the Create dialog are unavailable until you select an alert template. Depending on template selection, Objects and Metrics panel are populated. 1. General 2. Figure 18, General customization, illustrates selection options. In this section, you can provide the following information. Name: Name of the threshold alert criteria. Severity: You can select the severity of the threshold alert criteria. The available severities are. - Critical - Major - Minor - Info Sampling: You have three choices of data samples, during sampling the system verifies if any of the configured threshold criteria has been met. - Hi-res: data collected and verified at the frequency of every five minutes - Hourly: data collected and verified at the frequency of every hour - Daily: data collected and verified at the frequency of every day Recurrence Pattern: You can specify the number times that the system should verify if the threshold criteria has been met. Example, in Figure 18, if this criteria is met for two times in last two samples then raise an alert. This is optional and disabled by default.In addition, you can provide the Alert on object count, that s if the number of objects specified in the section meets the threshold criteria only then the system generates an alert. This is disabled by default, which means no count is specified. If no count is specified then an alert will be generated for each object that meets the conditions. If a count is specified, only one alert can be possible, so long as X objects meet the conditions. The threshold criteria is applied to the selected objects. To remove a specific object(s), select the Remove objects button. Filter by rules: You can apply filters for physical drives For example drive types FC and SSD are selected by clicking on Add rules. The threshold criteria is applied for FC and SSD drives. To remove a specific rule(s), select the Remove rules button. In the Metrics panel: 1. Click on Add metrics. 2. Enter the threshold values. For the example, Total IOPs and Read IOPs are listed with threshold values as 1000 and 800 respectively. 3. To remove a specific metric, click Remove metrics.
